After doing work-for-hire projects with their new company in the mid '90s, they finally released a passion project, called <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/carmageddon"><em>Carmageddon</em></a>, which featured goofy and gory, over-the-top vehicular carnage, and still claims a place in the heart of older PC gamers everywhere. In order to get published, they sold rights for the title to SCI, which co-published the game with Interplay.<br /> <br /> The title was followed up with a sequel in 1998 (it was called <em>Carmageddon II: Carpocalypse Now</em>, back when games could be called things like that), but when the sequel didn't do as well, the worst happened: Buckland and Barnden lost their own creation. They've spent years since then trying to get the rights back.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/">Carmageddon Reincarnation (PC)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009769"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009770"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009771"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009772"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/carmageddon-reincarnation-pc/#5009773"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/05/carmageddonr4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/carmageddon-earns-reincarnation-as-a-kickstarter-project/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Carmageddon earns Reincarnation as a Kickstarter project</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/08/carmageddon-earns-reincarnation-as-a-kickstarter-project/">Carmageddon earns Reincarnation as a Kickstarter project</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 08 May 2012 11:00:00 EST. When a game publisher closes a door, they always open a window -- unless, of course, they're cancelling the game, in which case they always burn the whole house down. This idiom now applies directly to the release of Namco's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ridge-racer-vita"><em>Ridge Racer</em></a> for the PS Vita which, according to the recently revealed <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/12/22/playstation-vita-launch-lineup-and-details/">PlayStation Blog</a> line-up, has been pushed from the list of "launch day" releases to the list of "launch window" releases.<br />
<br />
What's that mean for the fate of the title? Well, it could still mean that it's coming to the states alongside the console on February 22, but that Namco Bandai is playing it safe with the new terminology. In all likelihood, however, it means the game's been delayed beyond the console's due date. We've contacted the publisher for a clarification.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/23/ridge-racer-vita-moved-from-launch-day-to-launch-window/">Ridge Racer Vita moved from launch day to 'launch window'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 23 Dec 2011 05:45:00 EST. <br />
If you lamented <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a>'s decorum and its increased focus on the rally discipline, Codemasters has a flashy alternative in <em>Dirt Showdown</em>, coming to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2012. <a href="http://uk.gamespot.com/dirt-showdown/previews/dirt-showdown-preview-less-dirt-more-destruction-6347189">Gamespot</a> has the first details on the spinoff, which eschews racing for a trio of arcade-style modes and a plethora of pyrotechnics.<br />
<br />
<em>Dirt Showdown</em> features "Hoonigan events," in which you perform driving stunts within compounds around the world (similar to <em>Dirt 3</em>'s gymkhana challenges). You'll also find a crunchy ode to collisions in the demolition derby events, alongside some more straightforward (minus those devilish hairpin turns) racing modes. You won't find point-to-point style dashes through lush foliage and arid landscapes here -- though Gamespot notes they'll "return with a renewed focus on simulation in Dirt 4."<br />
<br />
The preview claims that <em>Showdown</em> has an answer to Need for Speed's Autolog, allowing racers to challenge and monitor each other's performance online. A "mission-based" mode provides the foundation for much of these social challenges.<br />
<br />
It seems the game's style and tone, compared to <em>Dirt 3</em>, is perhaps best captured in the "King of the Ring" gametype, which sees all participating cars racing to a central point and then disintegrating into a shiny cloud of wrecked bits. And to think, we used to be so impressed when those triangles came flying off the cars in PlayStation's <em>Destruction Derby</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/12/dirt-showdown-ditches-rally-for-arcade-style-events/">Dirt Showdown ditches rally for arcade-style events</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Dec 2011 18:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skyrim"><em>Skyrim</em></a>? Pssh, forget that noise, November 11 is all about <a href="http://nitronic-rush.com/"><em>Nitronic Rush</em></a> now. A "survival driving" game for the PC, <em>Nitronic Rush</em> has been developed by the aptly named Team Nitronic, a group of students at the DigiPen Institute of Technology, the same school responsible for <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narbacular_drop">Narbacular Drop</a></em>. As you can tell from the release trailer above, the game looks <em>flippin' gorgeous</em> (see what we did there?), and we can't wait to see if the gameplay ends up being just as stellar. <br />

Dragons are so old hat, you guys; glowing mystical daredevil highways are the new hotness.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/06/nitronic-rush-a-survival-driving-game-by-digipen-students/">Nitronic Rush: a 'survival driving' game by DigiPen students</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 06 Nov 2011 11:30:00 EST. YOU WILL GET A NEW "MACHINE," the teaser trailer for the obligatory PS Vita version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ridge-racer-vita"><em>Ridge Racer</em></a> promises. We have ... just, literally no idea what that means. Evolution Studios and Sony America have announced the release of an update to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/motorstorm-apocalypse"><em>Motorstorm Apocalypse</em></a> that's probably beefy enough to charge for -- luckily, they didn't! <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/11/motorstorm-apocalypse-monster-update-mode-editor-steering-wheels-and-move/">The update</a>, which went live earlier today, adds a network for sharing your customized vehicles, streamlines a few online multiplayer options, and includes support for the PlayStation Move and select racing wheel peripherals.<br />

The update also adds a "Mode Editor," which allows you to tweak pretty much anything you want in a given race. For example, with two clicks, you can disable both brakes and gravity. The potential for unintentional hilarity here is dizzying.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/11/motorstorm-apocalypse-update-adds-make-a-mode-move-support/">MotorStorm Apocalypse update adds make-a-mode, Move support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 11 Aug 2011 23:00:00 EST. "You're not trying to get first, you're trying to make up ground," <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a> producer Alex Grimbley explained to me during a demo session in midtown Manhattan last week. Rather than putting priority on being the absolute first during individual races, <em>The Run</em> focuses on an overall place in a cross-country race, amounting to roughly 200 miles of in-game track spread across the US. And yes, it'll allow you to go back to individual areas and work on improving track times.<br />
<br />
"Get to 101st by the time you make it here, get to 50th by the time you make it to Chicago, get to the top 10 by the time you make it to New York ... so this is a different take on a sprint race," Grimbley continued.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/">Need for Speed: The Run (Desert Porsche)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324196"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr1-1311769421_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324197"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr2-1311769424_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324198"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr3-1311769426_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324199"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr4-1311769427_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run-desert-porsche/#4324200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/nfstr5-1311769428_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/27/need-for-speed-the-run-preview-getting-back-behind-the-wheel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Need for Speed: The Run preview: Getting back behind the wheel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/27/need-for-speed-the-run-preview-getting-back-behind-the-wheel/">Need for Speed: The Run preview: Getting back behind the wheel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 27 Jul 2011 09:02:00 EST. Fans of Codemasters' 2008 racing title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/grid"><em>GRID</em></a> received some bad news this weekend: The multiplayer servers for the PC and PS3 versions of the game <a href="http://community.codemasters.com/forum/grid-multiplayer-1035/467878-grid-online-multiplayer-discontinued-ps3-pc.html">have been taken offline</a>. A post on the publisher's forums explains, "This follows the decision by a third party provider to decline the offer of an extended contract to continue online play on these platforms." The provider apparently decided the 360 SKU's servers were worth saving -- Xbox Live players still have access to the game's full range on online features.<br />
<br />
We wish Codemasters would really think these kinds of actions through before executing them. You guys know what the repercussions for this outage will be, right? Jilted PS3 and PC players are going to get into real-life illegal street racing. Do you really want to be responsible for people falling into that lifestyle, Codemasters? <em>Do you</em>?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/19/codemasters-takes-down-grid-ps3-and-pc-servers/">Codemasters takes down GRID PS3 and PC servers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 19 Jun 2011 16:30:00 EST. We've all done it: There's an empty parking lot, not another driver in sight -- why not tear it up? But what if there <em>was</em> another driver and a third party who, presumably, was responsible for setting up a series of intricate ramps and jumps? Well then, you'd have yourself a Gymkhana battle.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/dirt-3-trailer-throws-down-in-a-gymkhana-battle/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 trailer throws down in a Gymkhana battle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/dirt-3-trailer-throws-down-in-a-gymkhana-battle/">Dirt 3 trailer throws down in a Gymkhana battle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 23:30:00 EST. Some of you in the Ridge Racer hardcore may have been a little put out by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/14/ridge-racer-unbounded-teaser-trailer-is-far-less-crashy/">early video</a> of the edgier <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ridge-racer-unbounded"><em>Ridge Racer Unbounded</em></a>, but it appears you needn't worry. During Namco Bandai's Level Up event in Dubai, product manager Kevin Chadine said that the <em>Ridge Racer</em> brand is becoming a larger umbrella with several series underneath it, much like EA has done with <em>Need For Speed</em>, saying of <em>Unbounded</em> that "This is just a different branch."<br />
<br />
So don't fret, Ridge Racers. Think of <em>Unbounded</em> less as a new direction and more a sidepath, a shortcut that's being explored. And, assuming this is the first of many, let's hope the side streets down the road have better names.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/ridge-racer-unbounded-will-be-a-brand-within-a-brand/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ridge Racer Unbounded will be a brand within a brand</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/ridge-racer-unbounded-will-be-a-brand-within-a-brand/">Ridge Racer Unbounded will be a brand within a brand</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 May 2011 21:00:00 EST. We admit it -- before watching this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> trailer, we thought that a "superteam" was something super heroes joined to unionize the crime-fighting process. Now we know that it's a thing that rally car drivers join, so that they can drive real fast together.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/dirt-3-trailer-joins-the-superteam-probably-fights-some-crime/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 trailer joins the superteam, probably fights some crime</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/dirt-3-trailer-joins-the-superteam-probably-fights-some-crime/">Dirt 3 trailer joins the superteam, probably fights some crime</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 May 2011 05:00:00 EST. Following yesterday's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/need-for-speed-the-run-revealed-in-teaser-trailer/">teaser reveal</a> of <em>Need for Speed: The Run,</em> EA has today spelled out some details we didn't know and confirmed some that we inferred from the trailer. First and foremost, the game is indeed speeding toward a holiday release date of November 15, 2011 in North America (and Nov. 17 in Europe). EA Black Box is at the wheel (as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/01/need-for-speed-shift-2-black-box-developed-nfs-both-hinted-for/">rumored</a>), with EA DICE's Frostbite 2 engine under the hood.<br />
<br />
Additionally, <em>The Run</em> will feature the much-loved Autolog feature (as loved in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit"><em>Hot Pursuit</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shift-2-unleashed/"><em>Shift 2</em></a>), as well as the "hot cars and crazy-fast chases" we've come to expect from the <em>NFS</em> series. As seen in the trailer, the game will follow racers cross-country (<em>Cannonball Run</em>-style) from San Francisco to New York, with plenty of stops in between. EA's announcement also notes that "entering the race is just the beginning," with races taking place in "dense urban traffic," on "icy mountain passes" and "narrow canyons." Presumably we'll find out more about <em>The Run</em> as E3 approaches, this June.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/">Need for Speed: The Run (box art)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097791"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstr360pftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstrpcpftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097793"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstrps3pftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/need-for-speed-the-run/#4097794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/nfstrwiipftfront_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/29/need-for-speed-the-run-detailed-racing-to-stores-nov-15/">Need for Speed: The Run detailed, racing to stores Nov. 15</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 29 Apr 2011 09:55:00 EST. EA's official <em>Need for Speed</em> YouTube account has <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vR693MTwzq8">posted a teaser trailer</a> for yet another iteration of the racing series, this one called <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-the-run"><em>Need for Speed: The Run</em></a>. Most of the <em>Need for Speed</em> series titles have focused on the cars, but this one seems to be hinting at a story specifically about the drivers in what looks to be a cross-country race a la <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082136/"><em>The Cannonball Run</em></a>.<br />
<br />
As cityscapes flash across the screen (San Francisco, Vegas, Denver and New York) we see police officers and vehicles; a man crashed in a car who ends up in a precarious situation; and a series of disasters, both natural and manmade. Finally, a tagline on the screen reads "The Race for your life," before changing the "for" to "of," followed by "11-15-11" -- a likely release date.<br />
<br />
See the trailer for yourself after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/need-for-speed-the-run-revealed-in-teaser-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Need for Speed: The Run revealed in teaser trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/28/need-for-speed-the-run-revealed-in-teaser-trailer/">Need for Speed: The Run revealed in teaser trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 28 Apr 2011 18:50:00 EST. As far as awesome spectacles in gaming go, <em>MotorStorm Apocalypse</em> is up there with the best. I don't know if I've ever seen a game, let alone a racer, with this amount of action happening at any given moment. I can't help but marvel at the degree and detail of the destruction it renders on a city-wide scale -- which is a problem, since I'm supposed to be focused on racing.<br />
<br />
Everything comes at you so fast, furious, loud and bright that opponents trying to ram you off the "track" (little in this game resembles an actual race course) are the least of your worries. No, the greatest risk is running into the scenery ... over and over and over again.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motorstorm-apocalypse-4-20-11/">MotorStorm Apocalypse (4/20/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motorstorm-apocalypse-4-20-11/#4074875"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/2010-12-13interstate004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motorstorm-apocalypse-4-20-11/#4074876"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/2011-01-10boardwalk003big_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motorstorm-apocalypse-4-20-11/#4074877"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/boardwalk001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motorstorm-apocalypse-4-20-11/#4074878"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/boardwalk007_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/motorstorm-apocalypse-4-20-11/#4074879"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/docklands005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/22/motorstorm-apocalypse-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>MotorStorm Apocalypse review: Crash test dummy</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/22/motorstorm-apocalypse-review/">MotorStorm Apocalypse review: Crash test dummy</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 22 Apr 2011 17:00:00 EST. Are the newfangled autocontraptions in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shift-2-unleashed"><em>Shift 2 Unleashed</em></a> a little too modern for you? Not a fan of all the vehicular bells and whistles fastened to your 21st Century whips? EA has announced a DLC pack that should give you the sweet, nostalgic release you crave. On April 24, the game will receive 14 retro cars and five equally retro tracks -- most of which hail from the 1960s and '70s.<br />
<br />
You can pick up the new rides and venues for 800 Microsoft Points ($10). Check out the full list of new-old content included in the "Legends" pack after the jump -- and while you're back there, why not check out the DLC's announcement trailer?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/shift-2-legends-dlc-brings-some-classic-cars-out-of-the-garage/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shift 2 'Legends' DLC brings some classic cars out of the garage</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/21/shift-2-legends-dlc-brings-some-classic-cars-out-of-the-garage/">Shift 2 'Legends' DLC brings some classic cars out of the garage</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Apr 2011 22:00:00 EST. If you're intrigued by Codemasters' upcoming rally racer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a>, but find yourself turned off by all the ... um, <em>rally racing</em>, the developer recently revealed a multiplayer-oriented "<a href="http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/04/08/friends-of-the-earth-dirt-3s-party-mode/">Party Mode</a>" which might just float your boat. The mode will feature three distinctly non-racing mini-games, including:
<ul>
	<li>
		"Invasion," in which players drive around an open lot, crashing into cardboard robots while avoiding cardboard skyscrapers. We anticipate this will be harder than it sounds, as some skyscrapers seem to resemble giant robots nowadays.</li>

		"Outbreak," which sees one player "infected" with some sort of automotive ailment, symbolized by their car turning bright green. The player can spread the disease to others by colliding with them, and the last healthy player wins the pot.</li>
	<li>
		"Transporter," a capture-the-flag title where players must grab randomly-spawning flags and return them to their home base, avoiding their fellow, flag-snatching drivers. Jason Statham appears to be regrettably absent.</li>

You remember <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/trackmania-2"><em>Trackmania 2</em></a>, right? You're not the only one! Even though Ubisoft seems to have forgotten about its much anticipated sequel -- it was supposed to launch in beta <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/ubisoft-maniaplanet/">late last year</a> -- fans on the game's forums have pieced together the first screenshot of the game (seen above) by compiling a puzzle -- pieces of which have been popping up in the first <em>Trackmania</em> as of late.<br />
<br />
Additionally, a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trackmania-2/#/1">second puzzle</a> has been revealed, though it's yet to be completed. As you might expect, it features a car on a track ... <em>driving like a maniac</em>. What's that? You wanna help? Head right over to the <a href="http://forum.maniaplanet.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&amp;t=864&amp;start=0"><em>Trackmania</em> forums</a> and get crackin'!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trackmania-2/">Trackmania 2</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trackmania-2/#4040076"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/trackmania2headerimg530px_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trackmania-2/#4040080"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/04/puzzle21024trackmania2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/09/trackmania-2-still-coming-first-screenshot-released/">Trackmania 2 still coming, first screenshot released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 09 Apr 2011 03:00:00 EST. It was a wise move for EA to subdue the <em>Need For Speed</em> in the title of its sequel to last year's first racing sim in the franchise, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-shift"><em>Need For Speed: Shift</em></a>. That's not to say <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shift-2-unleashed"><em>Shift 2 Unleashed</em></a> is unworthy of the brand -- far from it -- but given how well received the last arcade-style <em>NFS</em> title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit"><em>Hot Pursuit</em></a>, was, there would surely be plenty of folks who'd think this was the sequel to that game. It's so very <em>not</em> that.<br />
<br />
The original <em>Shift</em> remains one of my favorite racing games of all time -- and one of my most-played titles ever, too. So, to say that I've had some pretty high expectations of its sequel would be an understatement. Since last year, I've wondered how EA and Slightly Mad Studios were going to improve on the most realistic feeling, visceral and downright <em>fun</em> console racing sim to date. The short answer: They made it more realistic. The long answer is after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-3-29-11/">Shift 2 Unleashed (3/29/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-3-29-11/#4010909"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shift2review01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-3-29-11/#4010910"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shift2review02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-3-29-11/#4010911"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shift2review03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-3-29-11/#4010912"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shift2review04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-3-29-11/#4010913"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/shift2review05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/31/shift-2-unleashed-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shift 2 Unleashed review: Pedal to the medal</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/31/shift-2-unleashed-review/">Shift 2 Unleashed review: Pedal to the medal</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 31 Mar 2011 18:30:00 EST. Rally racing is already an inconceivably dangerous sport -- but the now-forbidden "<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Group_B">Group B</a>" league once took things to new levels of speed and fatality. It might be illegal in the meatspace, but in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3">Dirt 3</a> </em>the spirit of Group B is alive and kicking, as seen in this trailer.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/dirt-3-trailer-previews-the-wicked-dangerous-group-b-rally/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dirt 3 trailer previews the wicked dangerous Group B Rally</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/dirt-3-trailer-previews-the-wicked-dangerous-group-b-rally/">Dirt 3 trailer previews the wicked dangerous Group B Rally</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 22:30:00 EST. Every night, before we loose ourselves from the moorings of the conscious world, we say a short prayer that a game developer will realize the potential in a relaunch of Sega's arcade almost-classic, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harley-Davidson_%26_L.A._Riders"><em>Harley Davidson &amp; LA Riders</em></a>. Our wishes haven't been granted yet, but a recently uncovered patent (<a href="http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20110053691.pdf">.pdf</a>) shows that Nintendo of America came awfully close to creating something similar to Sega's <em>Easy Rider</em>-esque masterpiece.<br />
<br />
The patent depicts a motorcycle (and/or Jetski) racing game controlled using the Wii Balance Board and Wiimote. Twisting and turning the remote accelerates and turns the bike, while leaning on the Balance Board allows the player to take sharper turns. It's unclear whether the game depicted is still in development, but we'll keep our fingers crossed regardless. Hey, it beats buying and riding an actual motorcycle, you know. Those things are like, <em>super</em> dangerous.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/28/nintendo-of-america-patent-shows-off-unreleased-motorcycle-game/">Nintendo of America patent shows off unreleased motorcycle game concept</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 20:00:00 EST. It's difficult to imagine a new hardware launch that isn't accompanied by a new <em>Ridge Racer</em> game (sorry, Wii). So, with the dawn of glasses-free portable 3D gaming upon us, the seminal 3D -- as in polygons -- arcade racing series is idling at the starting line, ready for you to take the wheel.<br />
It may seem like a cash grab, with the game arriving at launch more or less unchallenged and bearing a well-known name, but while there's probably some element of that at play, there's no denying that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ridge-racer-3d"><em>Ridge Racer 3D</em></a> is as strong an entry in the series as there's been in years.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ridge-racer-3d-1-19-11/">Ridge Racer 3D (1/19/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ridge-racer-3d-1-19-11/#3800900"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/ridgeracer3ds3dscvrsht010311rv1cjcomp1withr_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ridge-racer-3d-1-19-11/#3800901"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/3dsridgeracer05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ridge-racer-3d-1-19-11/#3800902"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/3dsridgeracer01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ridge-racer-3d-1-19-11/#3800903"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/3dsridgeracer02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/ridge-racer-3d-1-19-11/#3800904"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/01/3dsridgeracer03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/ridge-racer-3d-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Ridge Racer 3D review: Classic car, new finish</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/25/ridge-racer-3d-review/">Ridge Racer 3D review: Classic car, new finish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 21:10:00 EST. Bummed that your launch experience with <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/test-drive-unlimited-2"><em>Test Drive Unlimited 2</em></a> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/11/test-drive-unlimited-2-slammed-with-game-breaking-launch-bugs/">hampered by game-breaking bugs</a> and server outages? Atari and developer Eden Games <em>totally</em> understand -- and while it's a little impractical to come around and give shoulder massages to everyone affected, they'd like to do the next best thing: Give away some free DLC for your troubles.<br />
<br />
That being the case, <a href="http://forums.testdriveunlimited2.com/showpost.php?p=424005&amp;postcount=1">the upcoming Exploration DLC pack</a> will be a gratis download. It will unlock the Lancia Stratos version Rallye and 1969 Dodge Charger in addition to fixing a whole slew of bugs, from login issues to repairing corrupt saves -- even adding an improved casino experience.<br />

The content has gone live for the PC version already, with the console updates currently being approved by Microsoft and Sony, so they're expected soon.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/24/test-drive-unlimited-2-players-get-free-dlc-as-apology-for-bug-p/">Test Drive Unlimited 2 players get free DLC as apology for bug-plagued launch</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 08:00:00 EST. Back in 2006, EA was exploring the idea of a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/road-rash"><em>Road Rash</em></a> game. Aside from the video evidence that surfaced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/what-an-updated-road-rash-mightve-been/">back in late 2009</a>, we now have some new concept art and mock-up pieces to ogle from Liverpool-based artist, Richard Cook -- after leaving EA, Cook spent a few years working with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/bizarre-creations-farewell-video-is-legitimately-sad/">Bizarre Creations</a> on <em>The Club</em> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/james-bond-007-blood-stone"><em>Blood Stone</em></a>.<br />
<br />
Being back on the job market has brought some attention to Cook's portfolio; these pieces seem to suggest EA was aiming to have big environmental set pieces in the game (the tornado above and a speeding train are a few), with one piece of concept art in particular showing a branching path where players could potentially take different routes in a level. <br />
<br />
Sadly, it looks like this is all we're going to see on this version of <em>Road Rash</em>. The project was canceled back in 2006 and the studio responsible, EA Warrington, has <a href="http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/ea-warrington-studio-closure-a-creative-decision">since been shuttered</a>.<br />

If you prefer to keep a safe distance from your driving sims -- or consider them an adequate venue for expressing your obsessive, controlling nature -- you should have someone pop in your <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> disc today. According to the official site, an automatically administered patch (bumping the game up to version 1.6) enables support for Remote Racing, a mode that allows you to manage drivers in B-spec races <a href="http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/products/gt5/bspec/">via the </a><em><a href="http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/products/gt5/bspec/">Gran Turismo</a></em><a href="http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/products/gt5/bspec/"> website</a>. You could be earning money at work <em>right now</em>.<br />
<br />
In addition, the patch allows tracks from the Course Maker to be used in online races, which also dole out more experience points. <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> v1.6 supports multi-monitor, multi-PS3 setups, and claims to have optimized the speed at which games are saved. It's a significant (and free) update, so be sure to have your assistant read <a href="http://us.gran-turismo.com/us/news/d5552.html">the full documentation</a> and report back to you.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/gran-turismo-5-patched-to-1-06-remote-racing-enabled/">Gran Turismo 5 patched to 1.06, Remote Racing enabled</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 18 Feb 2011 14:20:00 EST. Though <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/naild-review">we liked the game</a>, you still might be wondering if Techland's ATV racer <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/naild">Nail'd</a></em> is your cup of, er ... nails? Good news then: There's a demo of the game now available on the Xbox Live Marketplace -- currently only for Gold members -- that'll drive you to either buy, rent or delete.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/psa-naild-demo-hammers-xbox-live/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSA: Nail'd demo hammers Xbox Live</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/09/psa-naild-demo-hammers-xbox-live/">PSA: Nail'd demo hammers Xbox Live</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Feb 2011 15:30:00 EST. Despite not making <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/13/december-npd-xbox-360-comes-out-on-top-in-2010-revenue/">December's NPD top 10</a> list, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5">Gran Turismo 5</a></em> sold 560,500 units last month in the US and Canada. <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/gran-turismo-sells-5605k-in-december/">IndustryGamers</a> got the number straight from the NPD Group -- a number which looks like an apparent dropoff from Sony's late November launch numbers, which heralded <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/gran-turismo-5-ships-5-5-million-worldwide/">5.5 million units shipped worldwide</a>, 1.25 million of which were in North America alone.<br />
<br />
And hey, let's not kid ourselves: a good amount of December's "sales" figures are also accounted for in November's "shipped" figures. All of them, in fact -- 1.14 million copies of <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> have been sold in the US and Canada thus far, a representative from NPD told us this afternoon, leaving approximately 110K copies from the initial shipment still on store shelves.<br />
<br />
That said, plans for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/gran-turismo-5-creator-wants-monthly-updates-plans-premium-car/">periodic support in <em>GT5</em></a> were highlighted by developer Polyphony Digital as recently as last month. Add that to the fact that the 2011 Formula One season is just around the corner, and we'd say it's likely that racing fans will continue to pick up the game as early 2011 progresses.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/14/gran-turismo-5-moves-560-500-units-in-december-1-14-million-sol/">Gran Turismo 5 moves 560,500 units in December, 1.14 million sold between Nov. and Dec.</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Jan 2011 16:20:00 EST. Your purchasing habits on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gog">Good Old Games</a> probably focus mostly on RPGs, strategy games, strategy-RPGs and RPG-strategies -- however, let's flip the script today, shall we? The newest newcomer to the GOG storefront is Delphine Software's <a href="http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/moto_racer_3"><em>Moto Racer 3</em></a>, a motorcycle racer originally released way back in 2002.<br />
<br />
At $10, <em>Moto</em> probably doesn't offer the dollar-to-timesink ratio you'd get from an <em>Arcanum</em> or a <em>Neverwinter Nights</em> -- but aren't you tired of all that high fantasy, anyways? Don't you want to drive some two-wheeled vehicles through heavy traffic at irresponsible velocities sometimes? Of course you do. That's just human nature.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/moto-racer-3-pops-a-totally-sweet-wheelie-onto-gog/">Moto Racer 3 pops a totally sweet wheelie onto GOG</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 02:30:00 EST. After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/09/need-for-speed-world-shifts-to-free-to-play-model/">going free-to-play</a> back in September, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-world">Need for Speed World</a></em> has added roughly 2 million users to its online racetracks, surpassing 3 million registered users in total. Just imagine rush hour!<br />

Although the majority of the expanded user base can be attributed to the change to a free-to-play business model, the recent localization of the game into French, Polish, Russian and Spanish likely contributed to the rise in <em>licensed</em> drivers, too. Now, how would EA say, "Please buy some DLC" in those languages?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/17/need-for-speed-world-population-passes-3-million-registered/">Need for Speed World population passes 3 million registered racers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 17 Dec 2010 17:30:00 EST. Looking to drift around <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/shift-2-unleashed">Shift 2 Unleashed</a></em>'s narrow apexes in a perfectly balanced Nissan Silvia Spec-R Aero (S15)? To leap from 0 to 60 in 3.3 seconds with an over $300K Lamborghini Murci&eacute;lago LP640? To ... uh ... commute in style in an Alfa Romeo Giulietta QV? You may want to pre-order the game, then, as EA announced this morning that all three cars will only be available at launch to folks who manage to snag the "Limited Edition" of <em>Shift 2</em>.<br />
<br />
Like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/battlefield-bad-company-2">Battlefield: Bad Company 2</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit">Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit</a></em> before it, the initial shipments of <em>Shift 2 Unleashed</em> will be "Limited Edition" versions packing the three cars -- no extra money is required, just <em>the need for speed</em> in making a purchasing decision.<br />
<br />
The release says nothing about when the trio of liveries will become available to the rest of us normal folk, but it does characterize the bonus as "immediate" rather than "exclusive" access. That said, we're sure the Autolog system moving over from <em>Hot Pursuit</em> will make whatever period of exclusivity torture while friends toast our time trials. Blast you, friends who think ahead!<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-pre-order-bonus-cars/">Shift 2 Unleashed (pre-order bonus cars)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-pre-order-bonus-cars/#3692807"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/shift-2nissans15silviaspecr1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-pre-order-bonus-cars/#3692808"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/shift2alfaromeogiuliettaqv1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-pre-order-bonus-cars/#3692809"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/shift2alfaromeogiuliettaqv2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-pre-order-bonus-cars/#3692810"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/shift2lambomurcielagolp6401_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/shift-2-unleashed-pre-order-bonus-cars/#3692814"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/shift2lambomurcielagolp6402_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/16/shift-2-unleashed-limited-edition-buyers-get-three-fancy-cars/">Shift 2 Unleashed 'Limited Edition' buyers get three fancy cars before the rest of us</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 13:30:00 EST. With a quick tease during this past weekend's Spike VGAs, Turn 10 Studios revealed its next project: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/forza-motorsport-4">Forza Motorsport 4</a></em>. Microsoft confirmed today that <em>Forza 4</em> will feature Kinect functionality -- the teaser trailer we've dropped after the break shows a brief moment that looks identical to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/kinect-motion-controls-coming-to-forza/">a few of the features we saw at E3</a> this year. <br />
<br />
Additionally, the studio is working with the US version of Top Gear "to create an automotive experience unlike anything before it" -- perhaps Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has been cloned and will ship with copies of the game, cheering and jeering players as they pilot supercars? That remains to be seen. What we do know is that <em>Forza 4</em> will drift into retail outlets sometime next fall.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/forza-motorsport-4-0/">Forza Motorsport 4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/forza-motorsport-4-0/#3672491"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/fm4logo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/forza-motorsport-4-0/#3672487"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/fm4announce2005fordgt1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/forza-motorsport-4-0/#3672488"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/fm4announce2005fordgt2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/forza-motorsport-4-0/#3672489"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/fm4announce2005fordgt3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/forza-motorsport-4-0/#3672490"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/12/fm4announce2005fordgt4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/forza-4-will-have-kinect-support-top-gear-content/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Forza 4 will have Kinect support, Top Gear content</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/forza-4-will-have-kinect-support-top-gear-content/">Forza 4 will have Kinect support, Top Gear content</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 10:55:00 EST. <em>Forza 4</em> was unveiled with a dramatic live-action trailer during tonight's Spike VGAs. The teaser gave an idea of what the game will include -- namely, simulation driving in really fast, expensive cars. Did you expect any less? See it for yourself after the break.<br />
<br />
Also, we're guessing that the Kinect functionality that we saw with <em>Forza</em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/06/14/kinect-motion-controls-coming-to-forza/">back at E3</a> could end up in this forthcoming title. Color us interested, just please, please don't make us pretend there's a steering wheel in our hands. <em>Forza 4</em> arrives on Xbox 360 in Fall 2011.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/11/forza-4-announced-with-live-action-trailer/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Forza 4 announced with live-action trailer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/11/forza-4-announced-with-live-action-trailer/">Forza 4 announced with live-action trailer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 11 Dec 2010 21:44:00 EST. With all the hype surrounding the likes of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5">Gran Turismo 5</a></em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/need-for-speed-hot-pursuit">Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit</a></em>, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/forza-motorsport-3">Forza Motorsport 3</a></em> dev Turn 10 Studios would like owners of its Xbox 360-exclusive racing sim to know that they're not forgotten. To that end, it's releasing the Community Choice Classics pack on December 14 for 400 Microsoft Points ($5), featuring 10 new cars voted into the game by fans.<br />
<br />
For us, the highlight of the pack is the 1982 DeLorean DMC-12. (We probably shouldn't tell Turn 10 it could've just sold the car by itself for $5 and called it a day.) You'll find the full list of cars after the <strike>brake</strike> break, and remember: just like election day, you can't complain about the winners if you didn't vote. Well, you can, but you'll sound like a <em>big jerk</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/forza-3-community-choice-classics-dlc-adds-10-cars-hits-dec/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Forza 3 'community choice classics' DLC adds 10 cars, hits Dec. 14</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/10/forza-3-community-choice-classics-dlc-adds-10-cars-hits-dec/">Forza 3 'community choice classics' DLC adds 10 cars, hits Dec. 14</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 15:29:00 EST. You didn't really think that work was finished on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5"><em>Gran Turismo 5</em></a>, did you? Car-obsessed creator Kazunori Yamauchi has been fielding questions from fans on <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/Kaz_Yamauchi">his Twitter feed</a> (translated at <a href="http://www.gtplanet.net/yamauchi-on-gt5s-mechanical-damage-updates-more/">GTPlanet</a>), revealing that a variety of fixes are in the works -- but also shedding light on some features we'll probably never see.<br />
<br />
Yamauchi confirms that his team at Polyphony Digital is working to implement mechanical -- not just cosmetic -- damage in <em>GT5 </em>sometime in early December. Less time-consuming fixes include nixing the game's odd-looking "blocky" shadows, adding more online functionality (the lounge is mentioned) and possibly offering the option to disable the HUD overlay. Work to support Logitech's G25 and G27 racing wheels in still underway, he adds.<br />
<br />
As for what we won't be seeing, it sounds like face-tracking in GT mode and YouTube uploading of replays are out due to memory constraints. We'll also never get a chance to experience the cut "free roam" mode, in which players would have been able to drive around the gameworld, obeying traffic laws and stopping to get out of their cars to explore on foot. We imagine this was referred to internally as the "We Need Another Year of Development Time" mode.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/30/yamauchi-talks-future-gran-turismo-5-updates-cut-features/">Yamauchi talks future Gran Turismo 5 updates, cut features</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 20:30:00 EST. In attempting to evaluate <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5">Gran Turismo 5</a></em> in a miniscule fraction of the time it took to create, game critics find themselves in disagreement over the franchise's longstanding expression and adoration of driving. Some find the experience sterile and cluttered, while others see an unrivaled level of love and dedication. Even so, it seems fans will know exactly what they're getting into, and reviewers seem to agree that things are especially good once you get behind the steering wheel. <br />

    <li><a href="http://www.destructoid.com/review-gran-turismo-5-188383.phtml">Destructoid</a> <strong>(100/100)</strong>: "Even beyond the 1,000 cars, dozens of track variations, countless modes, gorgeous visuals and mountains of options, Gran Turismo 5 has something more that speaks to the world's car lovers and racing fans. The level of care taken by the people at Polyphony Digital shines in every aspect of this title, and this makes for a racing game that truly has no parallel."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-24-gran-turismo-5-review">Eurogamer</a> <strong>(90/100)</strong>: "You see, the heart of the game has moved. It's no longer in the GT Mode, despite its improved pace, nor the tuning screen or parts shop. It's certainly not in the vestigial licence tests which are still there but no longer serve much purpose, Polyphony finally having given in and implemented a simple, sensible levelling system to unlock cars and events instead. The game's heart is in those Special Events."</li>
    <li><a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/113/1136103p1.html">IGN</a> <strong>(85/100)</strong>: "Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game - driving is as exhilarating as anything that's gone before, and slavish obsession with the minutiae of many of its cars ensure it's an encyclopaedia of automotive delights. Its brilliance on the track, however is matched by its sloppiness off of it, and there's a lack of polish that would at one time have seemed sacrilegious to the series."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.videogamer.com/ps3/gran_turismo_5/review.html">Videogamer</a> <strong>(80/100)</strong>: "The actual driving in Gran Turismo 5 is brilliant. If driving cars is all you care about, Sony and Polyphony Digital have you covered. These days, I want more. I want a streamlined career mode, an exhaustive set of online features, cutting-edge visuals, and above all else, a spark - the <em>something</em> that turns a game from good to really special."</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/gamesblog/2010/nov/25/gran-turismo-5-game-review">Guardian</a> (no score): "At times it feels less like playing a game and more like indulging in a hobby. Clearly it's no longer the sole pretender to the title of Best Racing Game; competitors snap at its heels in terms of graphical pyrotechnics, driving feel and immersion, and there are certainly better multiplayer experiences out there. But there's nothing with this much charm. If you want simply to bask in a deep love for cars, then there is still no better franchise."</li>

Sony's advice to those currently having hiccups with <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> is to temporarily disable internet access on their consoles. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-25-sony-limits-gt5-to-ease-online-gridlock">Eurogamer</a> reports that the game's constant online connection, even while navigating single-player content and menus, is causing "longer than comfortable lag."<br />
<br />
Sony has confirmed the game "performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode." This is causing "online congestion" and the publisher is working on "several different solutions" to improve the network.<br />
<br />
One of the solutions should come this Saturday, November 27, as <em>GT</em> creator Kazunori Yamauchi says a <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-25-gt5-update-confirmed-for-saturday">patch</a> will fix several issues, including "the usability of the game to make it a better experience." He noted the game's data center was "set up to handle 500,000 connections, but the number of connections we received greatly exceeded that amount and there was a high chance of experiencing problems as a result." <br />
<br />
Wait, <em>wait</em>, wait. <em>Gran Turismo 5</em> was designed in such a way that it constantly pings a data center that was only set to handle half a million connections... <em>for a Gran Turismo game</em>? It sounds like Sony hired the same consultant <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/09/battlefield-1943-servers-being-added-around-the-clock/"><em>Battlefield</em> developer DICE</a> uses to come up with its launch week capacity requirements.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/25/gran-turismo-5-hampered-by-constant-internet-access-patch-comin/">Gran Turismo 5 hampered by internet congestion, patch coming Saturday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 10:55:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/gran-turismo-5"><em>Gran Turismo 5</em></a> opens with a lengthy, ostentatious video that chronicles the construction of a car, from the mining of the metals that comprise it to the moment it rolls out of the factory, race-ready. These precisely edited visuals lead into a user interface that's so pristine and so polished that it left no doubt in my mind: the reason <em>GT5 </em>has been in development for so long, so delayed, is that it was <em>never</em> going to be perfect enough for series boss Kazunori Yamauchi. He's clearly a perfectionist, and as a result has made a good game, albeit one that's been driven down a very narrow path to end up something only a subset of gamers will truly enjoy.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-5-ps3/">Gran Turismo 5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-5-ps3/#2436595"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/g37_001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-5-ps3/#2359041"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-09-23_07-25-38_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-5-ps3/#2436596"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/tt_005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-5-ps3/#2359042"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/10/2009-09-23_08-36-36_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-5-ps3/#2436597"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/11/tt_004_sm_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/24/gran-turismo-5-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gran Turismo 5 review: Driven by perfection</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/24/gran-turismo-5-review/">Gran Turismo 5 review: Driven by perfection</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 03:01:00 EST.
