Remember kids, always consult your physician before taking advice from Welch heavy metal bands.
Continue reading Rock Band Weekly: Bullet For My Valentine

Rock Band Weekly: Bullet For My Valentine originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 27 May 2012 19:30:00 EST. Sounds like some old epic poem, right? Harmonix told us at GDC 2012 that it has no plans on stopping the weekly release of downloadable tracks for the Rock Band platform.

"We've been really pleased with the continued performance of Rock Band downloadable content. We've delivered over four years of weekly DLC and over 3500 songs for the music platform, and we have no plans to stop weekly releases any time soon," Harmonix emcee of communications John Drake told Joystiq. It would be hard to find two more disparate musical acts to combine into one blast of DLC, seeing how The Edgar Winter Group did everything it could to broaden the horizons of rock music, while Korn has done everything it can to narrow them back down.

This week's update includes two iconic singles from both bands, one of which will be a blast from the past for anyone familiar with Harmonix's back catalogue. Both Edgar Winter Group tracks support keyboards, as one would hope.
Continue reading Rock Band Weekly: Korn, The Edgar Winter Group

Rock Band Weekly: Korn, The Edgar Winter Group originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Jan 2012 23:59:00 EST. Oh, oh here they come, watch out boy, Hall and Oates will chew you up! For those unfamiliar with Hall and Oates, also known as Hall & Oates, they were a "rock and soul" duo that ruled the charts of the early '80s. Three of their best tracks are available as Rock Band DLC next week.
Continue reading Rock Band Weekly: Hall and Oates

Rock Band Weekly: Hall and Oates originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 14:45:00 EST. Rock Band is celebrating the 15th anniversary of Fueled By Ramen Records with a family pack of its more prominent artists. The spicy, high-sodium bundle includes tracks from Sublime, Travie McCoy, Cobra Starship and more. It will be available through the RB Music Store next week on Xbox 360 and Wii, and on PS3 once the update occurs after the holiday break.
The DLC includes several of Hendrix's most famous tracks, but everyone should be sure to take a trip "All Along the Watchtower."
Canadian rock legends Rush return to Rock Band next week with a three-pack of DLC. Joining the canuck caravan of tracks are Danish rockers Volbeat and American band Black Veil Brides. Harmonix also teased it'll have more Rush news by year's end.

All right, all right, Harmonix. A nine-pack of Queen hits kinda makes up for that Nickelback nonsense a couple weeks back. Rock Band 3 is still alive and kicking, despite everything happening behind-the-scenes, and in an effort to rekindle the world's love for rhythm games and plastic instruments, Mad Catz Interactive has released 5 new instrument bundles for the Xbox 360.

Each bundle includes the game, a DLC code for 5 different Red Hot Chili Peppers songs, and your choice of Fender Mustang Pro-Guitar ($150), normal Stratocaster controller($70), or normal Precision Bass controller ($80, available in three designer colors). Absent from these bundles, as you may have noticed, are the microphone and drum kit controllers known and loved by annoying college roommates the world over; a void the used market will undoubtably step in to fill.
New Rock Band 3 bundles from Mad Catz include 5 free DLC songs originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 27 Nov 2011 11:30:00 EST. Harmonix is trying to find a steady beat after a stressful year with surprising highs and lows. In an interview with Giant Bomb, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos mentions the company is considering a "fairly fundamental creative reinterpretation" of the Rock Band business.

"We still have a loyal audience who continues to show up weekly to gobble up our weekly releases. That actually continues to be a profitable business for us, which is nice," said Rigopulos. "We're committed to the franchise, but when I think that when we do things with it in the future, it's going to be a pretty dramatic departure from what we've done before."

Co-founder and CTO Eran Egozy added, "We do have plans on where we're going to go with Rock Band and how we plan to expand it. All I'll say for now is that it isn't what you think. You might assume we're going to add saxophone or something along those lines, but no, the kind of direction we're planning on taking Rock Band, the kind of innovation we have in mind, is taking it in a different direction, one that's more suitable to the kind of environment we're in, what people are doing now, what they're interested in playing now, versus, say, 2007."

Egozy concluded, "It's more than ideas. We are working on it, and we have forward progress. It's an exciting, fresh take on it. I'll leave it at that."
Harmonix: Rock Band in for a 'fundamental creative reinterpretation' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 25 Oct 2011 14:45:00 EST. Rob Zombie and, by extension, White Zombie scare us. It's not a Slipknot kind of visceral scare, but more of a brooding terror. So, we'll be using a picture of a bulldog puppy in a pumpkin this week. Next week's Rock Band DLC features the aforementioned Zombies and a track from The Darkness.
Continue reading Rock Band Weekly: Rob Zombie, White Zombie, The Darkness

Rock Band Weekly: Rob Zombie, White Zombie, The Darkness originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 21:30:00 EST. Next week's Rock Band DLC gets yellow with a six-pack from Brit alt-rockers Coldplay. Next week's Rock Band DLC includes a third track pack from American rockers Blink-182, featuring songs from several of the band's studio albums. Flying solo is "Rock the Casbah" from The Clash, a great warm-up song to any Rock Band party marathon.

In honor of the Rock Band Facebook page topping 2 million "Likes," Harmonix decided to let news loose a bit early about some varied, excellent artists arriving on Rock Band 3's DLC service in the "coming weeks and months." We're actually inclined to skip right over two of the groups -- Breaking Benjamin and Dream Theater -- as they've both already had DLC tracks added to RB3 in the past. Here are the two brand new biggies: Stevie Wonder and Coldplay. We simply cannot say "Hooray!" loudly enough.

No mention is made of which songs specifically will be launched, but Coldplay, Breaking Benjamin, and Stevie Wonder all have full track packs on the way, while Dream Theater's keeping it more low key with a single. Perhaps if you go "like" the Facebook page we can get Stevie Wonder right now? Maybe just one track, even?
The band, with songs like "Pulse of the Maggots" and "Wait and Bleed," is a little disturbing to look at. So, here's an adorable Shar-Pei eating toilet paper! Viacom is suing a group of former Harmonix stockholders, seeking a refund of over $131 million that it paid out, which it calls a "contractual overpayment." According to court documents, Viacom paid stockholders a total of $149,770,149 in 2007, based on an estimate of earnings; it then said that the real amount due was $131 million less than that, and asked for the remainder back, claiming that the payments were made "on account."

Harmonix shareholders brought their own suit against Viacom last year on a related topic. They actually claimed Viacom owed more in earn-out payments from the sale of Rock Band games. When Mad Catz re-releases Rock Band 3 this holiday, it'll be acting as sole financier on the Xbox 360-only publishing deal. "They're actually doing the retail distribution as well as marketing support, etc. They're acting as de facto publisher for the title," Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos explained to me in an interview session late last week at the Tokyo Game Show.

That makes Rock Band 3 one of the first retail Xbox 360 game to be published by Mad Catz, a long-time peripheral manufacturer who is now getting into publishing on Microsoft's console. The company's second title, appropriately named War Wings: Hell Catz, is due to arrive on PCs some time in 2012. It has yet to be announced for the Xbox 360. Additionally, Mad Catz has a rugby title due out later this year.

Rigopulos also noted that the relaunch is aimed at a variety of people, from new audiences who haven't ever played a Rock Band title, to "people who are still playing Rock Band 2 or Guitar Hero players who haven't even entered the genre yet." Rock Band 3 will relaunch with Mad Catz branding and peripherals for the Xbox 360 some time this holiday season.
Mad Catz fully responsible for relaunch of Rock Band 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Sep 2011 14:05:00 EST.
