The film, based on id Software's Wolfenstein series, was first announced in 2007.

The film met several bumps along its production course, including a halt due to the Writer's Guild strike, during which Avary said he was "almost done with the script." This was before Avary faced legal troubles in 2008 on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence, in which he was released on a $50,000 bail. Avary continued work on the script in 2008, but when his involvement in a Silent Hill movie sequel stopped in 2010, all talk of the Wolfenstein adaptation stopped as well.

The Wolfenstein movie's plot is described as follows: "A young U.S. Army Captain and a British Special Agent on a top-secret mission to Castle Wolfenstein where Hitler will be for the unveiling of a new secret weapon."

In a recent interview with Fangoria, prolific horror film producer Don Carmody gave an update on the sequel to the 2006 film adaptation of Silent Hill. Things are going less than awesome, as Carmody explained production is "a little stalled now because of [writer/director] Roger Avary's [legal problems], so a little unsure yet." Carmody is referring to Avary's one-year prison sentence, which he received after being charged with vehicular manslaughter following a fatal 2008 car accident.

Carmody went on to explain, "the original plan was Roger writing and polishing the screenplay, and when he had finished his thing, we'd begin full-blown preproduction. I'm not sure what's going on with that. We know we want to make Silent Hill 2 and have a basic outline for it. We'll have to see." According to the Ventura County Sheriff's Department website, Avary has been released from prison -- whether or not he's in the screenwriting mood remains to be seen.

"DRIVER, 25, a test driver for Audi Germany in his mid-twenties -- a little Beckham, a little McQueen -- with munchy hair and intense blue eyes that show a focus that's laser-like."

These precious words constitute the first sentence of the Roger Avary-crafted screenplay for the (currently on-hold) film adaptation of the Driver series. The first five pages of the "HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL" script (written circa fall 2006) were recently leaked to superannuation, an anonymous (but extremely reliable) gaming news source. We have no idea who did the leaking, nor are we entirely certain of the script's veracity. Still -- a blogger can dream. If you have the literate faculties to do so, please take the time to lose yourself in this all too brief masterpiece.

Update: The mastermind behind superannuation contacted us, informing us that he (or she?) was the one who actually discovered the script. Good find, sir! (Or madam!)

Although we'd think Roger Avary's work would have been put on hold in light of his recent legal issues, he is still apparently hard at work on the script for a big-screen Wolfenstein film.

id's Todd Hollenshead told Eurogamer that, though the recent writer's strike slowed things down, progress on the feature is being made, "I've recently been in contact with Roger and he's actually working on the script right now." Hollenshead did state progress is going slower than they'd like, but then again we don't think Avary would like to be implicated in a manslaughter case either. So, who wins that argument?

Film director and screenwriter Roger Avary, whose game-related work includes the Silent Hill, Driver and Return to Castle Woflenstein adaptations, has been arrested in Ventura, California on suspicion of driving under the influence and manslaughter.

Avary was driving the car with his wife Gretchen and friend Andreas Zini when the car crashed. Avary's wife was injured and Zini later died at the hospital from injuries related to the crash. Avary is also known for co-writing Pulp Fiction and Beowulf. He has been released on $50,000 bail. The film adaptation of Return to Castle Wolfenstein has been on hold since the beginning of the Writer's Guild of America strike.
