For being a Nintendo property, the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=star+fox">Star Fox</a> </em>series hasn't performed, well -- it hasn't performed like a Nintendo property. Gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto recently divulged to <a href="http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/10/27/mario-creator-talks-disappointment-with-star-fox/">MTV Multiplayer</a> that the series has been on the decline since its inception, with steadily declining sales for each new iteration.<br />
<br />
But, despite all of that, Miyamoto is still a "big fan" of the series. He says that every time a new entry releases, he's "hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do," but that -- in Japan, at least -- the series' popularity has not met with Nintendo's expectations over its lifespan. It's understandable, really; when a company puts out the best-selling "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/13/wii-fit-may-surpass-san-andreas-sales-wii-play-is-top-selling/">game</a>" of the last decade, it might find it hard to justify putting out something that isn't <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-super-mario-bros-wii">guaranteed</a> to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-legend-of-zelda-spirit-tracks/">create giant piles of cash</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/miyamoto-a-big-fan-of-star-fox-says-series-popularity-on-the/">Miyamoto a 'big fan' of Star Fox, says series popularity on the decline</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 19:50:00 EST. Nintendo's resident gaming legend, Shigeru Miyamoto, foresees long-term -- nay, long-tail -- sales for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/new-super-mario-bros-wii"><em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii</em></a>, a prospect that isn't completely insane when you take a few things into account:<br />
<ul>
    <li>The game has Mario in it.</li>
    <li>Its DS counterpart is the second highest-selling DS game of all time and has sold consistently since its release in 2006.</li>
    <li>It's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/08/hands-on-new-super-mario-bros-wii/">super fun</a>.</li>
</ul>
So, when Miyamoto says that the game "will continue selling even after one year has passed" during <a href="http://gamesmaya.blog98.fc2.com/blog-entry-988.html">a play session in Japan</a> (<a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fgamesmaya.blog98.fc2.com%2Fblog-entry-988.html&amp;sl=ja&amp;tl=en&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8">translation</a>), we have a tough time arguing with the guy. Any sane person would, right?<br />

Luminary <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shigeru-miyamoto">Shigeru Miyamoto</a> hasn't lost his shimmer in the eyes of game developers, with a recent industry poll finding the Nintendo icon to be without equal. The survey, commissioned by organizers of next month's <a href="http://www.developconference.com/">Develop Conference</a>, asked 9,000 devs to name their game development hero, with nearly a third of respondents pointing to Miyamoto as the man with the plan. <br /><br />The popularity contest also named id Software's John Carmack as the next most idealized developer, followed by Maxis and now <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/stupid-fun-club/">Stupid Fun Club</a> brainpan Will Wright. The top ten list of industry highlights was rounded out by <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/braid">Braid</a></em> dev Jonathan Blow, who's likely too busy rewinding time (to see if he can somehow land higher on the ballot) to care.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/15/survey-developers-still-worship-miyamoto-blow-too/">Survey: Developers still worship Miyamoto, Blow too</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Jun 2009 11:15:00 EST. Shigeru Miyamoto and <em>Spore </em>have been recognized by The Jim Henson Company as part of their annual "Jim Henson Honors" awards. The legendary game designer was bestowed the Celebration Honor, which goes to an "individual, organization or product that makes the world a better place by inspiring people to celebrate life." Mario, Donkey, Wii ... yeah, you know the drill.<br /><br />As for <em>Spore,</em> it took home the Technology Honor, probably because it allowed everyone to create their favorite <em>Star Wars </em>characters or giant penis monsters. The other not so game-related awards went to artist Shepard Falrey (Creativity Honor) and the Center for Puppetry Arts Distance Learning Center (Community Honor). <br /><br />Congratulations to everyone. We can't think of a better way to celebrate than with the video after the break.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/one-week-with-spore-creatures-0/">One week with Spore Creatures</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/one-week-with-spore-creatures-0/#866090"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/cre_moogle-0680fc1b_ful_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Moogle!" title="Moogle!" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/one-week-with-spore-creatures-0/#866087"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/cre_ebolic-0680fc1f_ful_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Ebolic" title="Ebolic" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/one-week-with-spore-creatures-0/#866088"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/cre_octo-grimace-0680fc1e_ful_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Octo-Grimace" title="Octo-Grimace" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/one-week-with-spore-creatures-0/#866089"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/cre_weegler-0680fc20_ful_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Weegler" title="Weegler" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/one-week-with-spore-creatures-0/#866091"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2008/06/cre_melliphon-0680fc22_ful_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Melliphon" title="Melliphon" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/spore-shiggy-honored-with-jim-henson-awards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Spore, Shiggy honored with Jim Henson awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/15/spore-shiggy-honored-with-jim-henson-awards/">Spore, Shiggy honored with Jim Henson awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 20:55:00 EST. The opportunists at <em>ONM</em> couldn't resist mentioning the 'Z' word, but Miyamoto wasn't budging too much. "</span><span class="text_article_body">I'm really not sure when we'll be able to make a public announcement on that," he said, adding, "I can't even say if the next <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3">E3</a> will be the right opportunity to do so. But rest assured, our teams are working on new projects right now."</span><br /><br />So the next <em>Zelda</em> ... <em>might</em> not be at E3 next year! If that's the case, we could reasonably expect to see something at Nintendo's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/02/highlights-from-nintendos-big-news-day/">fall conference(s)</a>. We'd at least like to have a <em>peek</em> next year -- having downloaded <em>Ocarina of Time</em> from the Virtual Console over the weekend (spoiler: it's still unfathomably brilliant), this blogger is aching for a new entry in the series.<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/">The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__15__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__14__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__13__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__12__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__9__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/16/miyamoto-unsure-about-next-zelda-announcement/">Miyamoto unsure about next Zelda announcement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 16:20:00 EST. Well, during <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/miyamoto-we-have-many-games-in-development-for-loyal-nintendo-fans/?biz=1">an interview with GameDaily</a>, Miyamoto said a lot of the same stuff <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/miyamoto-wants-big-new-ideas-in-next-zelda/">he's been saying</a> ever since <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-music"><em>Wii Music</em></a> has been completed (Nintendo hasn't forgotten about you, there's a lot of games in development, and so on and so forth).<br /><br />Miyamoto commented that 30 years he's been "making games" and for the majority of that time, these have been games "that the loyal Nintendo fans enjoy." He went on to say that those games are "the types of games that my career is based on and we're going to continue to make those types of games. In fact, we have many of those types of games in development right now." Sounds like a plan to us, Shiggy, but it doesn't make <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/reggie-explains-mario-and-zelda-teams-are-working-on-new-games/">the waiting</a> any less painful!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/28/miyamoto-assures-the-core-nintendo-is-working-on-games-for-them/">Miyamoto assures the core Nintendo is working on games for them</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 13:41:00 EST. <br />Shigeru Miyamoto recently hosted a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/wii-music-not-so-much-of-a-joke-in-japan/"><em>Wii Music</em></a> roundtable with a select number of websites and magazines (clearly, our invitation was lost in the mail), in which the great man appeared to <em>insult</em> <em>other music games</em>! Shock! Horror! Headlines!<br /><br />Of course, we understand Miyamoto probably wasn't <em>trying</em> to be mean when he compared playing franchises such as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatmania"><em>Beatmania</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/guitar-hero-world-tour-its-a-wii-game/"><em>Guitar Hero</em></a> to being part of a cover band. If anything, we suspect Shiggy was merely explaining how <em>Wii Music</em> is more freeform -- which it is, of course. "My goal wouldn't be to try and lull people to join the best cover band," explained <em>Wii Music</em>'s dad, "but rather, to let them move beyond that rather basic level of music training."<br /><br />He also found time to defend <em>Wii Music</em>'s track list, which has come under attack from some critics, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/metareview-wii-music/">IGN's Matt Cassamassina</a>, who we like to think shifted awkwardly in his seat when Miyamoto brought the subject up. Apparently, a lot of modern songs don't have a suitable chord progression for <em>Wii Music</em>, while the harmonies and melodies of many contemporary tracks came across as too samey. So there you go: Nintendo didn't just choose a ton of public domain songs to save cash.<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/24/miyamoto-guitar-hero-beatmania-are-cover-band-titles/">Miyamoto: Guitar Hero, Beatmania are 'cover band' titles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Oct 2008 18:08:00 EST. We just love the guy <em>so much</em> that we believe he's not even human and some kind of freakish evolutionary leap for our species, as his mind churns out these amazing things on a regular basis. So, it's no wonder that Channel 4 in the UK interviewed him out of all of the prominent figures in gaming about the current financial woes and if they'll have an impact on gaming. He plugs <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-music"><em>Wii Music</em></a> a bit, but, for the most part, tells us how Nintendo has and always will make gaming affordable.<br /><br />
<br />[Via <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=199782">CVG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/20/miyamoto-talks-to-channel-4-about-gaming-and-the-current-financial-cri/">Miyamoto talks to Channel 4 about gaming and the current financial crisis</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 21:15:00 EST. <br />The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/zelda"><em>Zelda</em></a> team is currently <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/reggie-explains-mario-and-zelda-teams-are-working-on-new-games/">beavering away</a> at the next game in the series, and it sounds like the title might introduce a different spin on the usual <em>Zelda</em> formula.<br /><br />Shigeru Miyamoto has told IGN that the <em>Zelda </em>franchise requires "big new unique ideas," and added that the development team "is very focused on trying to find those ideas." He ruled out adopting a first-person perspective for the series, after IGN reminded him that Eiji Aonuma showed <em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em> played through Link's eyes at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/03/11/gdc-07-and-thats-a-wrap/">GDC 07</a>. May we recommend a side-scrolling game interspersed with lengthy, high-quality cut-scenes? Oh, uh, <a href="http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BaHlUlWHNTo">never mind</a>.<br /><br />Anyway, while Shiggy's comments are rather vague, this does raise another issue: is the <em>Zelda</em> series growing stagnant? The initial outcry over <em>Wind Waker</em> suggests change is a delicate issue with the fans!<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/">The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__15__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976794"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__14__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976792"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__13__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976788"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__12__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-legend-of-zelda-twilight-princess/#976786"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/08/zelda_wii_approved_session_2__9__thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=58619">Go Nintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/09/miyamoto-wants-big-new-ideas-in-next-zelda/">Miyamoto wants 'big, new ideas' in next Zelda</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 09 Oct 2008 14:36:00 EST. <br />In what is now a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/09/miyamoto-links-crossbow-training-is-fps-training/">time</a>-<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/04/iwata-asks-mario-kart-wii/">honored</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/23/iwata-asks-sakurai-volume-2/">tradition</a> for Nintendo's first-party releases, Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto came together over a cup of tea and a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jammy_Dodgers">Jammie Dodger</a>* to have a chinwag about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-music"><em>Wii Music</em></a>. Neither man fell about laughing hysterically at any point in the interview, so we assume the game is actually going ahead.<br /><br />As usual, Shiggy came up with some corking soundbytes, in between reflecting on the ukelele he received as a youngster and other trivial details. These included the <em>shocking revelation</em> that he had never been so excited while making a game as when making <em>Wii Music</em> -- not even when he was crafting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/19/deaths-that-dont-mix-with-super-mario-bros/"><em>Super Mario Bros</em></a>. In an even more controversial twist, the conversation then turned to how <em>Wii Music</em> could (in Iwata's words) "raise people's basic level of music education." Not surprisingly, Miyamoto agreed, adding, "I've even thought it would it would be great if kindergartens or elementary schools got <em>Wii Music</em> and began kid's music education with that ..."<br /><br />So there you go: according to Nintendo's top men, <em>Wii Music</em> could kickstart basic music skills in kids ... by making them play invisible instruments. We like kittens. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/23/tenchu-iv-to-feature-kittens-might-be-the-best-game-ever/">This post from yesterday</a> just got them on our brains and their cute, furry little selves won't get down from up there. So, we figured we'd ask you all about your favorite game kittens, or just plain old felines.<br /><br />So, out with it! Love the cat in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/born-for-wii-chuchu-rocket/"><em>Chu Chu Rocket</em></a>? <br />Shigeru Miyamoto played the role of diplomat to <em>perfection</em> when IGN asked for his views on Microsoft's (plainly <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/15/source-avatars-to-be-microsofts-answer-to-miis-and-home/">Mii-influenced</a>) <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/07/14/e308-dashboard-overhaul-and-avatars/">Avatars</a>. The Nintendo guru claims he found the nabbing of his personalized, blobby creations to be "quite flattering," and then went on to suggest that "the basic ideas behind those two different systems are different, and because of that I think they will probably develop in different ways."<br /><br />Way to stay on the fence, Shiggy. We like to think he was privately <em>fuming</em> inside.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/16/e308-miyamoto-flattered-by-microsoft-avatars/">E308: Miyamoto 'flattered' by Microsoft Avatars</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 22:15:00 EST. The article also mentions that the game's development "nearly led his 15-person development team to quit in frustration," though we've no idea whether that's <em>Time </em>slightly embellishing a story, or what Miyamoto actually said.<br /><br />All this talk of feeling stressed, Shiggy, and yet our letters offering slow, sensual shoulder rubs still go unanswered. The man, the myth, the <em>legend</em> himself, Shigeru Miyamoto, has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/11/miyamoto-nominated-again-for-time-100/">crushed the competition on the voting block</a> and secured his rightful place at the top of the list for Time Person of the Year. Of course, this doesn't actually mean he's going to be on the cover of Time magazine, but it's good to know he's at the top of the list. If anything, this will mean that Stephen Colbert will make fun of him on his show (check past the break).<br /><br />Good job, everyone. Now might be the right time to construct a bigger, stronger mantelpiece in the Miyamoto household, because Nintendo <em>hero </em>Shigeru Miyamoto has just won <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/03/09/you-may-rise-sir-shiggy/">another</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/12/igda-to-honor-miyamotos-lifetime-achievements/">damn</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/19/miyamoto-wins-award-in-london/">award</a></em>. This one comes courtesy of Japanese gaming bible <em>Famitsu</em>, which recently held its own awards ceremony in recognition of its 1,000th issue.<br /><br />As Miyamoto picked up 2007's MVP gong <strike>and subsequently burst into tears on stage</strike>, it seems fitting that two of his most ubiquitous Wii creations also did rather well, with <em>Wii Sports</em> (<em>not</em> a pack-in game in Japan, remember) bagging the Best Hit award, and <em>Wii Fit</em> grabbing a trophy of its own for innovation. So congrats, Shiggy -- even if you don't return our daily letters asking to meet up IRL for a chat, some chamomile tea, and a round of <em>Wii Sports</em> tennis (he'd be <em>really good</em>), we still love ya!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/28/famitsu-knows-a-legend-when-it-sees-one/">Famitsu knows a legend when it sees one</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 20:00:00 EST. <br />At first, we weren't going to post about Shigeru Miyamoto's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> interview with <em>The Times</em>, as it seemed fairly unremarkable. There are the usual platitudes from Shiggy about reaching out to all ages, and some tiresome examples of how mainstream press outlets still expertly patronize gamers (according to the article, the games industry "has long been the preserve of obsessive, nerdy teenagers, mostly called Alan"), but there's actually some interesting parts there also, tucked away amongst the fluff.<br /><br />For starters, it appears that Miyamoto is an absolute <em>hard ass</em> when it comes to parenting. Well, not really, but the Nintendo legend does reveal that he's always nagging his kids to get off of their backsides and go outside when the weather is good. And this guy is trying to <em>sell</em> videogames?<br /><br />More intriguingly still, the Nintendo legend speaks about how he hopes <em>Wii Fit</em> will have an impact on family life. As Miyamoto puts it: "In Japanese households, suddenly new conversations are springing up between fathers and mothers, fathers and daughters, talking about <em>Wii Fit</em>. <br />Had you described <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/wii-fit/"><em>Wii Fit</em></a> to us three years ago, we'd have gambled our entire gashapon collection on Mario, a man with a <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/02/mario-party-8-fastest-selling-game-in-the-franchise/">quite</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/10/mario-heads-back-to-the-diamond/">ridiculous</a></em> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mario-kart-week">number</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/12/ds-fanboy-review-mario-and-sonic-at-the-olympic-games/">of</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super+mario+galaxy/">pastimes</a>, being on the front of the box. A title such as, ooh, we don't know, "<em>Mario Workout"</em> wouldn't have been out of the question. Not any more, though -- not in the age of the <em>expanded audience</em>. Nowadays, Mario doesn't have a divine right to appear in every vaguely sporty Nintendo game.<br /><br />And we're glad about that. Not only do we totally dig <em>Wii Fit</em>'s sleek, minimalistic look, but Mario is already in enough stuff, and even Mario's daddy, Shigeru Miyamoto, agrees with us (great minds and all that). As Shiggy explained to MTV's Stephen Totilo: "We wanted to create it so that people of all ages could look at it and feel it was for them. I think [including Mario] might have limited its ability." So including Mario might <em>limit </em>the appeal of something? How novel!<br /><br />
<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/22/revealed-why-mario-isnt-in-wii-fit/">Revealed: Why Mario isn't in Wii Fit</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 22 Apr 2008 16:00:00 EST. <br />After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=iwata+asks+sakurai&amp;searchsubmit="><em>Super Smash Bros. Brawl</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=iwata+asks+wii+fit&amp;searchsubmit="><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/03/metareview-mario-kart-wii/"><em>Mario Kart Wii</em></a> has become the latest title to appear in the excellent "Iwata Asks:" series of interviews. Featuring producer Hideki Konno, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-wheel">Wii Wheel</a> project leader Kenichiro Ashida, and Shigeru Miyamoto (in fully relaxed, shirt-open mode) getting grilled by Satoru Iwata, it's a treasure trove of information for <em>Mario Kart</em> enthusiasts.<br /><br />Alongside an enjoyably lengthy dissection of the series' history, there's also discussion about <em>Mario Kart Wii</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/05/more-online-details-for-mario-kart-wii-and-its-channel/">online play</a>. The online matchmaking in particular sounds a treat, in that it allows players to join a race once it's finished, thus avoiding races becoming one-on-one affairs (as so frequently happened in <em>Mario Kart DS</em>). Players can use the Mario Kart Channel to check which of their friends are currently playing online, and even join them instantly.<br /><br />Producer Konno and Miyamoto also explained the decision to include bikes in this game, with Konno admitting that his own hobbies influenced the choice, and Miyamoto stating that the bikes are there to "make the world of Mario a little more for boys [by] adding an extreme-like element to the game." (Apparently, the title was originally known as "<em>Mario Kart X</em>," with the "X" taken from "extreme")<br /><br /> Finally, we hear more on the Wii Wheel, and the reasoning behind it. As expected, the peripheral is designed to make <em>Mario Kart</em> more approachable than ever before, and project leader Kenichiro Ashida reportedly created "about thirty" prototypes (many of which you can see in our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-evolution-of-the-wii-wheel">gallery</a>). Oh, and he even made <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-evolution-of-the-wii-wheel/735199/">gold</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/the-evolution-of-the-wii-wheel/735198/">black</a> versions -- <em>just for the hell of it</em>. The man has some serious clout. And, for good reason, considering that just about every single thing we love about Nintendo can be directly attributed to his efforts at the company. This latest interview is the usual Miyamoto fare, where he comments on just how <em>utterly insane</em> he is (making your own puppets and playing with them?!).<br /><br />The piece focuses mainly on Mario (considering his <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/08/meta-video-review-super-mario-galaxy/">recent</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/22/galaxy-back-down-to-2-in-all-time-rankings-we-burn-our-copies/">success</a>). His origins, as well as where he has come after all of these years, is discussed with the iconic figure. Oh, and he even takes some time to talk about the <em>horrible </em><a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108255/">movie</a> based (oh-so-loosely) on the gaming property. <br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/27/miyamoto-talks-mario/">Miyamoto talks Mario</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Nov 2007 18:00:00 EST. <br />He created Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda. He has been indirectly responsible for using up thousands of hours of our lives. We sort of want him to be our Dad. Yes, Nintendo design guru and general gaming god Shigeru Miyamoto turned 55 years young today (hasn't he aged well?), so it felt only right that we took the time to wish Shiggy many happy returns.<br /><br />Here's to a long and prosperous future, sir! Of course, we realize these are just crazy thoughts and don't have them written down anywhere in the same book where we keep all of our homemade sketches of the iconic gaming legend. We would never do that.<br /><br />But, given how much we read about Shiggy, his latest interview with Chris Kohler is one of his best. Shiggy manages to touch on an icnredible variety of subjects, including <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/16/rumor-wii-fit-priced-at-69-99/">price point talk</a> for <em>Wii Fit</em>, the upcoming Wii Ware channel and even took time to offer his opinions on the violent video game debate. <br /><br />If you're going to read one interview from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e307">E3</a>, this should be it.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/19/kohler-speaks-with-miyamoto-in-a-very-revealing-interview/">Kohler speaks with Miyamoto in a very revealing interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 19 Jul 2007 16:45:00 EST. What is the Time 100? Well, it's a who's-who list of influential and powerful people, a list that certainly <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100walkup/article/0,28804,1611030_1610841_1609873,00.html">demands</a> to have one of, if not <em>the most</em>, influential game designers in the industry, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=shigeru+miyamoto">Shigeru Miyamoto</a>. <br /><br />Lucky for him, you can have a say in who makes the list. All you have to do is follow the read link and give Mr. Miyamoto a rating. As of right now, he's got an average rating of 79, but we're sure that will come up. So, head on <a href="http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/time100walkup/article/0,28804,1611030_1610841_1609873,00.html">over</a> and let your voice be heard.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/23/help-miyamoto-get-a-nod-from-time-magazine/">Help Miyamoto get a nod from Time Magazine</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2007 13:25:00 EST. And it turns out this <em>George</em> knows a thing or two about the future of Wii gaming, dropping some clues on us ignorant folk about a pair of new titles. Wait, new games? Rock!<br /><br />First up is a game, which is being dubbed <em>Health Pack</em> at the moment, that is certainly the most interesting in our eyes. After performing some exercises in the game, supposedly your personal data will be sent out to hospitals that have been contracted out by Nintendo via a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/channels">Channel</a> and later returned as some kind of evaluation. Information on how the data will be collected and presented is sketchy as of right now, but we're pumped for a new Channel, let alone the doors this could open for future Channels and/or games.<br /><br />The second title, <em>Wii Music</em>, sounds a lot like the orchestra demo that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=shiggy">Shiggy</a> demoed during the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/09/nintendos-e3-keynote-coverage-from-joystiq-and-engadget/">E3 keynote</a>. In it, players will not only be able to control specific musicians in the orchestra, but also save their compositions and send them to other Wii users. While this doesn't tickle our fancy as much as <em>Health Pack</em>, we're certainly not in any position to complain about more games.<br /><br />According to the interview, both of these games are to be released before the end of 2007.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/greek-interview-reveals-new-wii-games-music-health-pack/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/new-wii-games-revealed-in-greek-interview/">New Wii games revealed in Greek interview</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 11 Apr 2007 20:00:00 EST. They inquired about all things Wii related, such as initial ideas behind the controller and creating a cost-effective console. They found out that the current goal of the company to turn people from all walks of life into gamers originally came from a desire to get gamers' moms playing.<br />
<p> <em><strong>So moms were a key target audience for this console? </strong></em></p>
<p> <em><strong>Miyamoto:</strong> Our goal was to come up with a machine that moms would want-easy to use, quick to start up, not a huge energy drain, and quiet while it was running. Rather than just picking new technology, we thought seriously about what a game console should be. [CEO Satoru] Iwata wanted a console that would play every Nintendo game ever made. Moms would hate it if they had to have several consoles lying around. </em></p>
<p> <em><strong>Ashida:</strong> We didn't want wires all over the place, which might anger moms because of the mess.</em></p>
<p>If that was Nintendo's goal all along, they should've just asked us. We have the most brilliant idea for a simulation game where you play a soccer mom and must drop the kids off at practice, making sure you take turns with care so that the children do not spill their juice boxes all over their uniforms (patent pending). There's still time Nintendo, all you need do is shoot us an email. <br /></p>

Some believed it to be purely for the internal speaker, while others had crazier ideas: personalized settings, content, and once the Mii system was unveiled, perhaps even the storing of one's own digital avatar. Is it true? You bet your gold coins it is. Straight from the <a href="http://www.play-nintendo.com/news/06101703.html">mouth of George Harrison</a>, each Wiimote will be able to store up to 10 Mii creations for those on-the-go fixes of Wii Tennis.<br /><br />Nintendo seems to be fostering the concept of a personalized Wiimote for each player, something never before attempted. If one can indeed store some settings (and a saved game or two? Maybe the internal memory was increased since then), the feeling would only increase. Get ready to show off your creations!<br /><br />[Thanks, Jrathert!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/10/18/miis-on-the-go/">Miis on the go</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Oct 2006 09:00:00 EST. Whether it was something totally unexpected that managed to pleasantly surprise or something that caused the attendee to lower their head into their lap in disgust, the unveiling of <em>Wii Orchestra</em> was unexpected. Since its showing at E3, nothing much else has been said about it.<br /><br />Well, during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/25/lgc-wrap-up-how-did-the-wii-do/">Leipzig</a> the game was made available and IGN got their hands on it. Some have noted that no actual force is required when using the Wiimote as if it were a sword or in any other kind of fashion, causing the previous point to be irrelevant. Well, now the argument may heat up yet again as Shigeru Miyamoto recently confirmed with <em>Nintendo Dream</em> magazine that the previous controls established for <em>The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess</em> are no more. <br /><br />Instead of using the B button to cause Link to slash, as the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/05/11/wii-impressions-zelda-twilight-princess/">E3 build</a> demonstrated, now players will need to physically swing the Wiimote around should they wish Link to vanquish his foes. Only thing is, the combat in previous <em>Legend of Zelda</em> titles has been intense, causing some to wonder if this new change is for the best. <br /><br />Also, now that the B button has been freed up, it will now be used when Link is utilizing the bow. Upon aiming at a target, hitting the B button will let loose the arrow from the bow. Miyamoto also tested out using the d-pad for aiming duties, but decided to scrap that idea.<br /><br />In the same article, Miyamoto stated that given the hardware set of the Wii, it would be easy to update GameCube titles to allow full use of the Wii's control scheme. Of course, we have to assume that if this were even going to happen it would only be restricted to first-party titles from Nintendo. Miyamoto said:<br /><br />"<em>We'll be upgrading the development tools, but GameCube code can be used for the most part as is. In that sense, I believe that it would be good to remake GameCube games for Wii, and that some titles would become better with the change to the Wii remote controller.</em>"<br /><br />So, you can have one GameCube game updated with the Wii control scheme: what would the game be and how would the Wiimote be used?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/21/wii-zelda-gets-some-major-changes/">Joystiq</a>; Thanks vidGuy and Marc!]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/21/loz-controls-get-updated-and-shiggy-talks-gc-titles-updated-for/">LoZ controls get updated and Shiggy talks GC titles updated for Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 21 Aug 2006 12:30:00 EST. Stocks are up, confidence is high, and Mario hasn't starred in a sports game for close to a year. (A streak that will soon end with <em>Mario Hoops: 3 on 3, </em>alas.) Here's another reason to toss a few down, Shiggy: Japanese newspaper <em>Kyoto Simbun</em> reports that sales for the Nintendo DS in Japan have hit ten million, making it the fastest-selling system (console or otherwise) in the country's history.<br /><br />Worldwide estimates of Nintendo DS and DS Lite sales are currently hovering around 22 million, which means that almost half of systems sold worldwide were done so in the Land of the Rising Sun. Another impressive statistic: around 8% of all Japanese citizens own the system. What does that mean? A cute girl on the street has a one in twelve chance of owning a DS.<br /> <br /> We like those odds.<br /><br />[Thanks, Romath!]<br /><br />[via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/02/nintendo-ds-fastest-selling-system-of-all-time-in-japan/">Nintendo DS: Fastest-selling system of all time! The origins of the Wiimote and nunchuck attachment are discussed, as well as left-handed gamers, the classic controller, and the controller's internal speaker. He speaks of an upcoming game in which all four players will use the same Wiimote, and the speaker will call out player names to indicate whose turn it is.<br /><br />Finally, the article seems to confirm that the nunchuck <em>will</em> come packaged with the console. We really didn't think Nintendo would stiff us like that...after all, their first three <em>huge</em> games (<em>Twilight Princess</em>, <em>Metroid Prime 3</em>, and <em>Super Mario Galaxy</em>) all require its use...but it's nice to know. This mystery title, if the post linked is to be believed, will be very similar to once-hot, now-not franchise <em>Starfox</em>. </p>
<p>Everyone is already going wild on the internet speculating that it is none other than the infamous Starfox 2, a game that was supposedly in finished beta form, yet never released due to the age of the hardware. Sir Shig's comment, which is supposedly <a href="http://www.chronicart.com/print/print25.htm">this</a>, when translated mentions nothing about this, so believe what you will.</p>
