In Silent Hill the town that means you're tormented by monsters based on your worst fears; in Book of Memories it means that your expectations can color the experience.

Basically, if you go in knowing it's a dungeon crawler with Silent Hill visuals, you'll be much happier than if you go in expecting a Silent Hill game. In either case, you'll get killed by a two-headed dog monster at some point.

While Silent Hill: Book of Memories will be out in North America on the seasonally appropriate date of October 16, the Vita action game will be released in Europe on November 2, just in time for ... the rest of November.

Strangely, the demo arrived in Europe before it does in North America this week, even though the actual game arrives later.

The PS3 version remains very much alive and kicking and joins Silent Hill: Book of Memories, Zone of the Enders HD, and Metal Gear Solid: Social Ops as the publisher's highlights. There's no sign of newcomer Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes at the moment.

We wanted to know more about how this unusual game came to be, so we went to publisher Konami and developer WayForward to get some insight on the development process behind Book of Memories.

The two companies responded with a surprisingly detailed development timeline for Silent Hill: Book of Memories, and a wealth of never-before-seen images from throughout the process, including screenshots of a PC demo WayForward put together to convince Konami they were the right team for the job. We've also spoken at length to Konami producer Tomm Hulett and WayForward Director Adam Tierney about the motivations behind the game's design.

Other retailers don't yet agree: GameStop says May 22, and GameFly has a terrifying "TBD" date.

At least Amazon's $5 credit offer is active, if you pre-order the game in advance of its eventual release. And in other sort of good news, the soundtrack was released last month, so you can listen to that while you wait. We're checking with Konami for an accurate release window.

It's fitting that he should be tapped for the soundtrack to Konami's next horror-themed game, Silent Hill: Book of Memories.

Licht is doing a live show in LA this June, where he'll belt out a few samples from the Book of Memories soundtrack. He'll be joined by vocalist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who also is featured on the Silent Hill: Book of Memories soundtrack. Tickets are on sale now for the June 10 show, which takes place at the Largo at the Coronot Theatre.

As you'll recall, Book of Memories was originally slated to be released in February, relatively alongside the Vita's North American debut. It was then delayed until March, as was the Silent Hill HD Collection, in an effort to extract the highest amount of retail synergy possible from Silent Hill: Downpour's release.

We've reached out Konami for confirmation; in the meantime, those of you who absolutely must be terrified on the go should load your MP3 player with the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack.

In this video, Konami producer Tomm Hulett explains the premise of the PlayStation Vita's weird spin-off game, Silent Hill: Book of Memories. "You receive a strange book. When you open it, you see your entire life story written on those pages," he said. "All your memories." You can then rewrite your memories and alter reality.

Apparently, judging by the gameplay, all the player-created characters then rewrite their lives as monster-filled nightmares -- with Hulett suggesting that even Pyramid Head shows up. In any other game, that would be weird, but it wouldn't be Silent Hill if the protagonist wasn't totally bonkers.

Speaking of gameplay, the above video features the first (early) direct-feed gameplay footage.

Konami showed off Silent Hill: Book of Memories during its Gamescom press conference this morning, revealing it to be a multiplayer action game (we expected that part) with a top-down or isometric perspective.

If you look closely, you'll notice that series stars Harry, Maria and James now exist in the same game! Of course, Konami is wisely opting to spin Book of Memories off into its own, completely unrelated story. You'll also be able to create your own protagonist, further distancing yourself from the sanctity of Silent Hill canon. Update: The Harry, Maria and James in the image above are just custom characters with cheeky names, Konami tells us.

Book of Memories features melee combat, guns and what appears to be a smattering of RPG elements. We'll try to get you more specific information as Gamescom continues.

It looks like that investigation resulted in the creation of Silent Hill: Book of Memories, which was recently announced for Sony's upcoming PS Vita handheld. Konami announced today that the title would focus on multiplayer, and we decided to ask series producer Tom Hulett how it came about.

Hulett reiterated that developer Vatra Games had looked into a multiplayer mode for Downpour , but was wary of adding it simply for the sake of having it. "We decided if we don't have something that is uniquely Silent Hill and feels good in multiplayer, we don't want to just tack it on," said Hulett, adding, "We don't just want to throw something in to say, 'hey, there's a bullet point.'" Multiplayer was scrapped for Downpour, but Konami "kept exploring" the idea and eventually came up with Book of Memories.

Hulett didn't offer many details -- like how exactly Silent Hill multiplayer is supposed to work -- though he did confirm that Vatra is not developing the title. Furthermore, the game will not be running on the Unreal Engine, which is being used to power Downpour.
