What's scarier, being absolutely broke or regretting never taking a chance to have a piece of video game history? An auction for Akira Yamaoka's guitar and FX amps, which were used to create the audio atmosphere for a little franchise called <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=silent+hill&amp;invocationType=wl-joystiq"><em>Silent Hill</em></a>, is currently <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;item=160565804078">underway on eBay</a> (and will last for five days).<br />
<br />
The auction is part of <a href="http://playforjapan.org/">Play for Japan</a>, a coordinated effort to present consumers and gamers with means to help the relief effort in Japan. If you partake, you'll not only feel good about donating money to Japan, but you'll possibly give this guitar a new home and outlook on life, one filled with joy, sunshine and family -- not giant death bunnies and other unspeakable horrors. <p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/30/silent-hill-composers-guitar-auctioned-for-japan-relief/">Silent Hill composer's guitar auctioned for Japan relief</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 09:05:00 EST. We always suspected we had nothing in common with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a> developer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Climax/">Climax</a>. We crave Coke, they prefer Pepsi. We swoon for Daniel Craig, they say George Lazenby is the best. We say tomato, they say ... well, that one works better when you say it out loud. Finally, though, we've found something we agree on: We both want them to make another <em>Silent Hill </em>game.<br />
<br />
Speaking with the UK's <a href="http://www.officialnintendomagazine.co.uk/article.php?id=14810">Official Nintendo Magazine</a>, lead designer Sam Barlow said, "For us we felt we've put our stamp on the series with <em>Shattered Memories</em> so we'd love the opportunity to do another one. So everybody go and buy it!"<br />
<br />
He's absolutely right, you should do that this moment. ... Hey! That's more common ground already.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;"><em><strong><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-wars">Halo Wars</a></strong></em><br />
Say what you will about the game's simplicity, or the brevity of the single-player campaign, but Ensemble Studios absolutely nailed console real-time strategy with <em>Halo Wars</em>. The controls work beautifully, allowing for the kind of granular management required in RTS games, and yet they remain simple enough for almost anyone to get the hang of the game. Add great online multiplayer and it's one tasty proposition.<br />
<br />
Frankly, I was so addicted to the Skirmish mode when reviewing the game that it ate into my work hours. Remembering that makes it harder to face the fact that Ensemble was shuttered once work on the game was complete. I can only hope that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/17/robot-to-develop-further-halo-wars-content-new-ip/">Robot</a> is given the chance to further the series, or at least work the controls into an entirely new game.</div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/02/best-of-the-rest-richards-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Richard's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/02/best-of-the-rest-richards-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Richard's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 02 Jan 2010 13:00:00 EST. I mocked this "re-imagining" of <em>Silent Hill</em> when it was first announced. I thought Harry Mason had become an older, life-hewn Harry <em>Potter</em> and considered the town's frosty makeover as nothing short of sacrilege. But an encounter with the game at E3 2009 (and with candid producer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/interview-silent-hill-shattered-memories-producer-tomm-hulett/">Tomm Hulett</a>) quickly changed my mind. While the game departs significantly from the franchise's known lore, it retains and streamlines much of what made <em>Silent Hill</em> stand out against games like <em>Resident Evil</em>. Encased in the game's frigid atmosphere, you'll experience a sense of bewilderment that, if you've been playing these games for a long time, you will not have felt in years. Indeed, the best surprises prey on those of us who think we know everything about <em>Silent Hill</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-ludwigs-picks-of-2009/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best of the Rest: Ludwig's Picks of 2009</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/01/best-of-the-rest-ludwigs-picks-of-2009/">Best of the Rest: Ludwig's Picks of 2009</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jan 2010 19:15:00 EST. The "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/nintendo-power-reveals-silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-wii/">reimagined</a>" first installment of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Silent Hill</em></a> is set to shatter memories in Europe on February 5, 2010. Konami <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/news/36949/Shattered-Memories-most-important-Silent-Hill-release-to-date">confirmed</a> the survival-horror title will release on Wii, PS2 and PSP on the appointed date. For those who can't wait, there's always an early <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Silent-Hill-homecoming"><em>Homecoming</em></a> in anticipation for that return to the cursed town.<br />
<br />
Reviews of the game have been what Metacritic defines as "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/09/review-silent-hill-shattered-memories/">generally favorable</a>," with a 76 average. Our own review took the approach that the game is good, but <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/09/review-silent-hill-shattered-memories/">is it still <em>Silent Hill</em> with all the changes</a>? <br />

I'm a big fan of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill"><em>Silent Hill</em></a>. I've played every game in the series and a few years ago you might even have caught me defending the <em>Silent Hill</em> movie. When I first heard that Climax was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/nintendo-power-reveals-silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-wii/">re-imagining</a> the first game in the <em>Silent Hill</em> series, and putting it on the Wii, I was a bit nervous. When the company revealed the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/06/silent-hill-shattered-memories-also-heads-to-ps2-psp/">logo</a> and announced that the rust laden, nightmarish Otherworld was being <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/04/10/new-silent-hill-shattered-memories-details/">brushed aside for an ice world</a>, I was downright scared. After gathering some more info and trying the game at E3, all fears were assuaged. This was to be the great hope of the <em>Silent Hill</em> series.<br />
<br />
Having spent two evenings with the game and completing the story for the first time, I'm conflicted. Was it good? Yes. I'm just not sure it's <em>Silent Hill</em>.<br />

Sadly, you can't play the cabinets in-game, but it's a nice Easter egg for fans, if we may say so. There's <em>Contra</em>, <em>Rush'N Attack </em>and -- our personal favorite -- <em>Gradius</em>. Check 'em out in the video above.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/09/konami-coin-op-cameo-in-silent-hill-shattered-memories/">Konami coin-op cameo in Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 09 Dec 2009 15:15:00 EST. Literally. Rather than flooding the senses with creepy atmosphere, rusted metal and <a href="http://xbox.joystiq.com/2008/10/03/wrup-coming-home-edition/">sexually confusing nurses</a>, the trailer opts instead for a montage of the game's characters and some rock music, specifically "When You're Gone," a new theme composed by the series' longtime (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/silent-hills-akira-yamaoka-officially-leaves-konami/">recently departed</a>) maestro, Akira Yamaoka.<br /> <br /> Sharp-eyed viewers will also notice that Cybil, the friendly police officer from the original <em>Silent Hill</em>, appears in two different variations in the trailer. The version of Cybil encountered will be different for each player, depending on the player's actions prior to meeting her in the game. Also featured in the video: Monsters. Lots of 'em.<br /> <br /> <em>Shattered Memories</em> releases December 8.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/silent-hill-shattered-memories-trailer-rocks-out/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories trailer rocks out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 16:20:00 EST. <a href="http://www.aeropause.com/2009/11/akira-yamaoka-leaves-konami-after-16-years/">Aeropause</a> claims that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Akira-Yamaoka">Akira Yamaoka</a>, the man responsible for <em>Silent Hill</em>'s evocative sound, has apparently left Konami after 16 years and is currently vacationing in Europe. Fans of the survival-horror series would rightfully claim that Yamaoka, whose work has been a constant in the entire series, is inextricably linked to <em>Silent Hill</em>.<br /> <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em><br /> Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a> producer Tomm Hulett told Joystiq in an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/interview-silent-hill-shattered-memories-producer-tomm-hulett/">interview</a> back in June that Yamaoka's music "adds a special element, it's kind of the atmosphere of the town." He continued, "If Akira's music isn't there, it just doesn't sound quite right. And I'm sure that there are people out there who could emulate the sound and try to get it close, but there would be something missing." We've followed up with the publisher for confirmation and comment.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/01/rumor-silent-hill-composer-akira-yamaoka-leaves-konami/">Rumor: Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka leaves Konami</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 01 Dec 2009 10:00:00 EST. It looks like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/12/retailers-move-silent-hill-shattered-memories-release-date-agai/">GameStop got it right</a>, as <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/104/1044570p1.html">IGN</a> reports that <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a> will arrive on the Wii on December 8. The PS2 and PSP versions have yet to be given solid release dates, with Konami promising to reveal further information at a later time. Given the Wii version's proximity to the holiday shopping season, it sounds like PSP and PS2 players can consider their sanity safe until 2010 -- though not long after, considering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/tgs-2009-hands-on-silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/#continued">our experience with the PSP version</a> at Tokyo Game Show.<br /> <br /> Wii owners, on the other hand, should start preparing now by stocking up on flashlights, blankets and plenty of batteries. Just remember, so long as you're <em>completely covered</em> they can't get you. How? By announcing a release date for <em>Europe</em>. <a href="http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-february">Eurogamer</a> reports that Konami will release the re-imagined survival-horror game on Wii, PS2, and PSP in February 2010.<br /><br />While the Eurogamer article references the uncertain American release date, no answer is given. Either the release date is being moved to 2010 worldwide, or Europe has the usual delay after the American date. The uncertainty is by far the scariest aspect of this game! Either that or the nightmare world that alters itself to more directly involve your worst fears. After Nintendo dated the game on its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/forget-about-buying-silent-hill-shattered-memories-before-novem/">release schedule</a>, we thought we could safely expect the game in November, but retailers have changed their dates once again.<br /><br />GameStop now expects to have <em>Shattered Memories</em> in stock on <a href="http://www.gamestop.com/browse/search.aspx?N=0&amp;Ntk=TitleKeyword&amp;Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&amp;Ntt=silent%20hill%20shattered%20memories">December 8</a>. GameFly, whose dates tend to differ from official ones by a few days, lists the Wii game as being available November 26, but the PS2 and PSP versions on <a href="http://www.gamefly.com/RentalMediaTitleSearch/Search/?kw=silent+hill+shattered+memories&amp;sec=1&amp;Go=Submit">December 31</a>. <a href="http://www.walmart.com/search/search-ng.do?search_constraint=2636&amp;ic=48_0&amp;search_query=shattered+memories&amp;Find.x=0&amp;Find.y=0&amp;Find=Find">Wal-Mart's</a> dates put the Wii version at November 24 and the PlayStation games on Christmas Day (which is <em>probably</em> not the real ship date, on account of there not being any mail delivery that day). <br /><br />Basically, the game is coming out <em>later</em>. It's not in stores right this second. That's all we can say with any degree of certainty.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063891"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br />[Via <a href="http://kotaku.com/5379777/silent-hill-shattered-memories-enters-fog-of-delay">Kotaku</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/12/retailers-move-silent-hill-shattered-memories-release-date-agai/">Retailers move Silent Hill: Shattered Memories release date again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 12 Oct 2009 21:00:00 EST. Much like 2007's<em> Silent Hill: Origins</em>, the PSP version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Shattered Memories</em></a> is quite capable of conveying an eerie, unsettling experience, even on a platform that might seem ill-equipped for the survival-horror genre in comparison to home consoles. The Wii re-imagining of Konami's PS1 classic is faithfully represented on Sony's portable, with only a few framerate hiccups tarnishing a very impressive visual representation.<br /></div>
<br />Recreating the Wii version's moody ambiance isn't the port's only major success, as it handles the absence of the motion-sensitive remote quite elegantly. Here, you manipulate Harry Mason's flashlight from a third-person perspective by holding R1 and moving the analog nub. While this removes the ability to move and peer into the terrifying town's dark recesses at the same time, the game's generally slow pace makes such multitasking more of a luxury than a necessity.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (PSP)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/#2063897"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/18_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/#2063898"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/19_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/#2063899"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/15_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/#2063900"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/13_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/#2063901"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/tgs-2009-hands-on-silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TGS 2009: Hands-on: Silent Hill Shattered Memories (PSP)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/26/tgs-2009-hands-on-silent-hill-shattered-memories-psp/">TGS 2009: Hands-on: Silent Hill Shattered Memories (PSP)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 26 Sep 2009 12:30:00 EST. Though it fails to offer a precise date, Nintendo's packed <a href="http://press.nintendo.com/articles.jsp?id=20008">holiday release schedule</a> has confirmed a November debut for <em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em>, the frigid re-imagining of the PlayStation survival-horror classic. GameStop, which is currently offering a <em>Silent Hill</em> soundtrack CD as a <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/remember-to-pre-order-silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-a-free/">pre-order incentive</a>, expects the game to arrive on November 3rd. <br /><br />According to producer Tomm Hulett, "If you've played the PlayStation game to death, you still have no idea what to expect for Shattered Memories." Oh, and definitely don't expect Dahlia to be a robot in this one. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/interview-silent-hill-shattered-memories-producer-tomm-hulett/">We made sure about that</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/15/forget-about-buying-silent-hill-shattered-memories-before-novem/">Forget about buying Silent Hill: Shattered Memories before November</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 Sep 2009 16:17:00 EST. Akira Yamaoka's music is one of the standout elements of the series, so if you don't already have a bunch of <em>Silent Hill</em> pre-order bonus soundtracks, you'll want this one. Oddly, the wording makes it sound like it's a <em>Silent Hill </em>sampler and not necessarily a <em>Shattered Memories</em> sampler, though we're sure at least a few tracks from the new game will appear.<br /><br /><em>Shattered Memories</em> does not have an official release date, but GameStop has moved its tentative date from October to November 3. So it's delayed, kind of?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=95365">GoNintendo</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/03/remember-to-pre-order-silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-a-free/">Remember to pre-order Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for a free soundtrack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Sep 2009 14:45:00 EST. When it was first revealed, we gave <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><span style="font-style: italic;">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</span></a> a bit of a cold shoulder. Gone was the established story that had first introduced us to the world's creepiest town, reinterpreted with altered characters and a new otherworld that ditched darkness and rust in favor of jutting glaciers and vaguely menacing snowflakes. Thankfully, our experience with the game at E3 <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/hands-on-silent-hill-shattered-memories-wii/">revived our expectations</a>, even if it was at the expense of <span style="font-style: italic;">whole</span> memories.<br /><br />We later had the opportunity to speak to producer Tomm Hulett, who elaborated on why we should call <span style="font-style: italic;">Shattered Memories</span> a re-imagining -- and not a remake:<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">You're making Silent Hill: Shattered Memories and you're tying it to the first game. Harry Mason is back, but you're calling it a re-imagining, you're not saying "remake." Is that a bad word?</span><br /><br />Right, that's a curse word. [laughs] By re-imagining, like you said, we've got the premise of the first game: you're Harry Mason, you're looking for your daughter Cheryl. Beyond that we've changed and updated it, so it's an entirely new experience. If you've played the PlayStation game to death, you still have no idea what to expect for Shattered Memories. <br /><br />We did that because, on the Wii, maybe there's a lot of people who haven't played any Silent Hill games, so it wasn't really fair to say, "Here's the sequel to Homecoming, enjoy yourself." But then, returning fans, they've played the first game, they've played Origins, they've seen the movie, and they've played Silent Hill 3 and it all kind of revolves around the events of the first game. So they wouldn't really want to play a remake and so, by re-imagining it, there's new content -- if you've never played it before, of course, it's new to you -- but then, there's also this extra layer of new content if you're returning, because you get to experience all these things that are different from what you're expecting. And that really fits the theme of Silent Hill, which is this place where your reality is subjective and you don't know what to expect. We've built that into the game if you're a returning fan.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/interview-silent-hill-shattered-memories-producer-tomm-hulett/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Interview: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories producer Tomm Hulett</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/interview-silent-hill-shattered-memories-producer-tomm-hulett/">Interview: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories producer Tomm Hulett</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 18:30:00 EST. That's a good one," remarks <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><span style="font-style: italic;">Shattered Memories</span></a> producer Tomm Hulett, taking the complaints from the so-called "unreasonable" <span style="font-style: italic;">Silent Hill</span> fans in stride. Remaking -- or "re-imagining," rather -- a horror classic is no easy task, least of all when the leading platform's scariest trait is its abundance of minigames. Calling it a re-imagining seems appropriate, with familiar characters and themes returning in unfamiliar ways, but that belies the fact that the upcoming Wii title (PSP and PS2 versions are also en route) is the freshest and riskiest <span style="font-style: italic;">Silent Hill</span> game to come along in years.<br /> <br />Conveying an intense, unnerving experience in the din of E3 is like reciting a poem behind an airplane barreling down a runway. The packed show floor, filled with colossal sub-woofers and eccentric excessiveness, couldn't be a less ideal place to play a survival-horror title. And yet, despite the copious distractions and some truly awkward sensor bar placement, <span style="font-style: italic;">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</span> managed to fool us -- if ever so briefly -- into thinking we were skulking around the world's least hospitable and most perplexing town. <br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063891"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/hands-on-silent-hill-shattered-memories-wii/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hands-on: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/hands-on-silent-hill-shattered-memories-wii/">Hands-on: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 08 Jun 2009 19:30:00 EST. <div align="left">Not even <em>Silent Hill</em> is afraid of the Wii's casual audience. Speaking to Joystiq during E3 2009, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a> producer Tomm Hulett described the game as being very much a true franchise entry (and we can attest to that!), but one that would enjoy the benefits of a wider audience and an intuitive control system on the Wii.<br /><br />"For the casual gamer, we say this like it's strange, but casual gamers go to horror movies," he explained. "There's a reason that we all started playing survival horror -- it was new and different and, 'Oh, it's like a scary movie that I play.'" According to Hulett the game's control system, which thrusts the Wiimote into the role of a flashlight, is intuitive enough to accommodate ... your mom. "I've had my mom try it out and she only plays <em>Animal Crossing</em>, but she can walk around as Harry Mason and run from creatures. It's really easy to pick up and play. If there's a casual gamer who enjoys going to the movies and seeing <em>The Ring</em>, they can go to the store afterward and buy <em>Silent Hill</em> and have a horror experience at home."<br /><br />Well, as long as they don't pick up <em>The Room</em>. That's a different kind of horror experience at home.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063891"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /></div>

At the start of Konami's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories/"><em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a>, a psychiatrist performs an evaluation on players, prodding them with some fairly personal questions. Answering the "Do you roleplay during sex?" question is probably one of the tougher ones to answer truthfully in full view of other E3 attendees. (<em>Hell yes</em>, if you were wondering. Also, stop that.)<br /><br />This was the discovery made by one young lady, who appeared to be answering some questions (another example: Do you think of other people during sex?) unfavorably and nervously. With the cursor hovering over another negative answer, she quickly looked around her and exclaimed, "This game is going to HATE ME!"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/04/overheard-e3-silent-hill-will-hate-me/">Overheard@E3: Silent Hill will hate me</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 04 Jun 2009 22:00:00 EST. <br />Although it was probably the most impressive looking game shown at Konami's Gamer's Night 2009 event last week, the "Wii-imagining" of <em>Silent Hill</em>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a>, was sadly not playable. It's a shame, too, considering how natural the game's motion controls appeared in the on-stage demo; seeing them in action made us really want to <em>try them</em>. <br /><br />We were left to watch the footage of the Climax-developed title and imagine what it will be like, roaming the streets of the snow-covered town, flashlight in hand and camera phone at the ready to catch the unexplainable and unnerving. Fortunately, it was a fairly meaty bit of footage that provided a good idea of what to expect from the game when we finally do get our hands on it.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063892"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/26_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063891"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/25_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063890"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/27_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-shattered-memories/#2063889"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/21_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/13/joystiq-impressions-silent-hill-shattered-memories/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joystiq impressions: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/13/joystiq-impressions-silent-hill-shattered-memories/">Joystiq impressions: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 13 Apr 2009 13:30:00 EST. IGN has posted a <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/971/971316p1.html">preview</a> of <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-shattered-memories"><em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em></a> so glowing, you'd swear it was radioactive. Aside from the effusive praise, there are a few details to be gleaned from the eyes-on preview. The psyche profile system revealed earlier this week is further fleshed out by the preview. Lead character Harry Mason will actually start the game in a psychiatrist's office, where players will have to fill out a form. The choices you make on the form, as well as other choices in the game, will affect other parts of the game.<br /><br />Harry's phone acts as the hub of all the game's information, containing the map, voice mail, text messages and a camera. The camera can be used to take pictures of certain areas, revealing ghostly images in the finished photos. The article cites a moment when Harry takes a picture of a strange swingset, only to see his missing daughter, Cheryl, show up in the photo. Once the picture is taken, Harry receives a voicemail from Cheryl ... creepy.<br /><br /> In an interesting twist, <em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em> features no combat whatsoever. When you're face to face with a freakish monster, the only choice is to run. Another change, the rusty, hellish Otherworld has been changed into a frozen, icy one instead. As in <em>Silent Hill: Homecoming</em>, the transition to the Otherworld takes place in real time as buildings freeze over and columns rise out of the ground. The preview assures us the transition is "breathtaking," but we'll reserve judgment until we can see some video.<br /><br />It certainly sounds like <em>Shattered Memories</em> could be shaping up to be a decent entry in the series, even despite the somewhat radical changes to the staple conventions. At least one thing isn't changing though. In IGN's <a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/971/971319p1.html">interview</a> with Climax -- a good read for anyone interested in the title -- it is confirmed that Akira Yamaoka will once again provide the soundtrack.<br /><br /><a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/971/971316p1.html">Source</a> - IGN: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Preview<br /><a href="http://wii.ign.com/articles/971/971319p1.html">Source</a> - IGN: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories Interview<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/10/new-silent-hill-shattered-memories-details/">New Silent Hill: Shattered Memories details</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Apr 2009 13:00:00 EST. <em>Silent Hill: Shattered Memories</em> was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/nintendo-power-reveals-silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-wii/">unveiled for Wii</a> last week by <em>Nintendo Power</em>, but it seems it won't be exclusive to Nintendo systems. This "re-imagining" of the original <em>Silent Hill </em>will also be going to PS2 and PSP, and as today's press release details, all three versions will be out sometime in Autumn this year.<br /><br />Gamers who played the original will have their memories slightly<em> shattered</em> upon picking up this new version -- characters won't be found in the same spots and new clues, dialogue and gameplay paths will serve to jumble things up. <br /><br />Another major change is the new "psyche profile," which monitors the player's reactions. Based on these reactions, alterations are made to the game's "visual elements" and the protagonist's actions as he encounters other people and creatures. The psyche profile system sounds interesting, but a bit difficult to fully grasp without seeing in action. Perhaps future gameplay videos will provide better insight into this new feature.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/06/silent-hill-shattered-memories-also-heads-to-ps2-psp/">Silent Hill: Shattered Memories also heads to PS2, PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Apr 2009 14:06:00 EST. The not-a-remake of the first game in the series is revealed in the May 2009 issue of <em>Nintendo Power</em>, which contains a 10-page cover feature on the Climax (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/silent-hill-origins"><em>Silent Hill: Origins</em></a>) developed game. (Oh, and it's not an April Fools joke -- we confirmed this news with the magazine.)<br /><br /><a href="http://gonintendo.com/?p=77596">GoNintendo</a> has scanned parts of said article and provides some details, such as the Wii Remote's use in interacting directly with environment-based puzzles. Subscribers to the magazine are beginning to get the issue now, and <em>Nintendo Power </em>tells us to expect an update related to the game <a href="http://www.nintendopower.com"> next week.</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/01/nintendo-power-reveals-silent-hill-shattered-memories-for-wii/">Nintendo Power reveals Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for Wii</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Apr 2009 18:05:00 EST.
