"As a gift to the persistently loyal fanbase for our Jedi games and in memory of LucasArts, we are releasing the source code for both games for people to enjoy and play with." The source code for each game can be found on Source Forge through the source links below, opening the game up to anxious modders across the galaxy.

Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast launched on the PC in 2002, with ports to Mac OSX, the original Xbox and Nintendo GameCube coming the following year. It's the sequel to 1998's Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith, developed by LucasArts for the PC, and revolves around the New Republic that forms after the collapse of the Empire. Perhaps Colonial Marines' true gameplay value lies in its modding opportunities, specifically those that would fix the game's graphics, lighting, AI, UI and anything else that might need it.

Groups of players with programming skills are taking to the Colonial Marines source code, attempting to patch up the game (for PC) on their own. Jones, whose previous work includes Moon and Source Code, is an award-winning English director and the son of music icon David Bowie. Joystiq has also obtained separate confirmation that Jones is indeed signed to direct Warcraft.

Legendary Pictures tapped scriptwriter Charles Leavitt back in August and has chosen to stick with his adaptation. Chances are, you'd be pretty excited -- even if you'd already seen the code when you were writing it.

Jordan Mechner, who did write Prince of Persia, received a box from his father containing a few retail Prince of Persia and Karateka packages, along with a couple of 3.5" disks. Those hold what Mechner believes to be the original Apple 2 source code for the platformer.

The best news (for people who aren't Jordan Mechner): as soon as he figures out how to "extract something useful," he plans to put it online, providing a rare look at gaming history, and perhaps fodder for weird remix projects.
Jordan Mechner finds original Prince of Persia source code originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 29 Mar 2012 19:30:00 EST. You've been patiently awaiting your crack at id Tech 4, the engine powering Doom 3, ever since id Software announced its intention to release the source code. Now, the wait is over! When Dead Island arrived on Steam in North America, it wasn't exactly what the game's developer and publisher intended on releasing. Rather, it was a pre-release dev build, meaning many folks encountered bugs or were unable to play the game altogether. Moreover, some PC users have been able to do rather ... interesting things with the early build, and one even spotted a somewhat disturbing skill name that didn't end up in the final game: "Feminist Wh*re".

One of Dead Island's playable characters, Purna, was apparently allotted a skill at one point that was dubbed "Feminist Whore", though it only shows up in the source code (in the "default_player_setup" file). It's possible that the skill eventually ended up as "Gender Wars," though that's just us taking an educated guess.

Publisher Deep Silver, issued this response: "These unfortunate actions were of one individual at developer company Techland and do not in any way represent the views of publishing company Deep Silver." Further, developer Techland stated: "It obviously violates professional and ethical standards at Techland and should never have happened. We're investigating this right now and we'll issue a statement later. For now, I can only express my sincerest apologies for this incident and assure you that whoever acted so irresponsibly did not represent the views and opinions of Techland. I'm equally sure that aside from the author of that unfortunate line of code, everyone at the office is as disturbed by this as you are."
You've been waiting to get your mitts on the source code to Doom 3 (how do you type with those mitts on?), and your time is almost here. First announced at QuakeCon 2009, John Carmack confirmed plans today, during QuakeCon 2011, to release the source to the 2004 FPS following the launch of id's new hotness, Rage. The code will be released this year.

According to VG247's liveblog, Carmack said in his keynote that these releases of Id code are a "challenge to other developers," and are beneficial to both Id and "the community." They're also a QuakeCon tradition -- last year, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Return to Castle Wolfenstein were opened up.

In related news, the Doom & Quake Complete Pack is on sale on Steam right now for $30.
Doom 3 source code going free after Rage launch originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 04 Aug 2011 19:30:00 EST. Bossa Studios lead designer Mike Bithell, whom you may remember as the creator of the 24-hour project Thomas Was Alone, knows a thing or two about coming up with compelling game concepts. We're not surprised that he recently turned his sights on gameifying one of our favorite movies of 2011 so far: Source Code. On his personal blog, Bithell explained how the film's penchant for Groundhog Day-esque repetition would translate over to a game mechanic, even drawing a handy diagram to illustrate his ideas.

Personally, we'd love for his vision to come to fruition, if only to achieve our dream of getting our Gyllenhaal fix in a video game format. We can't just keep playing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and pretending, you know. It's not healthy.
Mike Bithell conceptualizes a game based on Source Code originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 04 Apr 2011 15:30:00 EST. As part of the QuakeCon festivities, id's John Carmack revealed something that should excite the modding community: source code. Authors can now access source code for both Splash Damage's multiplayer-focused Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and 2001's series reboot, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, through id's FTP, which we've linked below.

Both games' sources are made available through the GNU General Public License agreement, which states that the code is available for both free and commercial use, so long as the individual using the code credits id Software and doesn't try to claim it as their own. If you want to tinker with either game, check out the convenient Big Download link below. Happy modding!
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and Return to Castle Wolfenstein source code available originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 18:01:00 EST.
