Mostly, we're excited for the potential: If Square Enix cares enough about Space Invaders to continue promoting the series, maybe it cares enough to continue the series. <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0225146/">Lorenzo di Bonaventura</a> and
<meta charset="utf-8" />
<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0698133/">Gigi Pritzker</a>, two producers who, collectively, are responsible for both <em>The Wedding Planner</em> and all three <em>Transformers</em> films, have secured the rights to produce a movie based on Taito's classic
<meta charset="utf-8" />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Space-Invaders"><em>Space Invaders</em></a>. When asked <em>why </em>movie rights for <em>Space Invaders</em> would even exist, the entire human population of Earth crumbled into exasperated, bewildered piles of dust.<br />
<br />
<meta charset="utf-8" />
We first caught wind of a potential <em>Space Invaders</em> adaptation in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/03/warner-bros-in-talks-to-produce-space-invaders-movie/">a report by the L.A. Times</a> last year, however it's unclear whether or not di Bonaventura's <em>Space Invaders</em> and Warner Bros.'s <em>Space Invaders</em> are one-in-the-same.
<meta charset="utf-8" />
According to <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/space-invaders-video-game-headed-208968">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, the pair have begun the process of finding a writer to pen the script, which we can only assume will have very little to do with space/invaders, and everything to do with Shia LaBeouf.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/10/hollywood-officially-out-of-ideas-options-movie-rights-for-spa/">Hollywood officially out of ideas, options movie rights for 'Space Invaders'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 10 Jul 2011 18:30:00 EST. What would you do if you woke up one day and suddenly discovered invaders, from space -- <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders">Space Invaders</a></em>, if you will -- totally all up in your planet? <em>Space Invaders</em> is a classic arcade title, presenting a simple premise and an almost infinite progression system. But there's just one thing needed to make it perfect. According to coder Derrgis, who created <a href="http://kinecthacks.net/kinected-space-invaders-at-electroshock/">this version for the ElectroShock Festival</a>, it's motion controls with Kinect.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/kinect-hacks-invade-space-to-control-space-invaders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kinect Hacks: Invade space to control Space Invaders</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/08/kinect-hacks-invade-space-to-control-space-invaders/">Kinect Hacks: Invade space to control Space Invaders</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Apr 2011 02:00:00 EST. How better to show off the capabilities of your state-of-the-art gadget than with ... <em>Space Invaders?</em> Taito released an iPad version (for $5) of its iPhone <em>Space Invaders</em> app worldwide -- and thanks to common iPad naming conventions, Taito thought it was a good idea to call it <em>Space Invaders HD</em>.<br />
<br />
The iPad game offers, of course, a larger-scale presentation of both the 1978 game and <em><a href="http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=space-invaders-part-ii&amp;page=detail&amp;id=2543">Space Invaders Part II</a></em>, as well as some promotional flyers and other vintage artifacts. It also has a rather cool new feature: a two-player mode that flips the screen so that players sitting across from one another can take turns. It's modeled on the classic cocktail-style arcade machines, and Taito even went so far as to demonstrate the game on iPads sitting on those arcade machines at an <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/07/16/space_invaders_ipad/">event</a> in Japan.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/16/space-invaders-landing-on-ipad-today/">Space Invaders landing on iPad today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Jul 2010 22:30:00 EST. Our knowledge of the fast-paced, edgy world of extreme sports is limited to "standing on moving, thin slivers of wood is really difficult," though we don't need to know much more than that to appreciate the gaming-influenced video posted below.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/real-life-snowboarding-meets-old-school-gaming-in-gnarcade/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Real life snowboarding meets old-school gaming in 'Gnarcade'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/14/real-life-snowboarding-meets-old-school-gaming-in-gnarcade/">Real life snowboarding meets old-school gaming in 'Gnarcade'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 14 Jul 2010 11:03:00 EST. The game appears in the magazine's table of contents. <br />
<br />
Additionally, <a href="http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3179741">1UP</a> reports that other Japanese game magazines have confirmed the <em>Infinity Gene</em> console release, which is said to be a downloadable port of the iPhone game for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network. There are two ways in which your acquaintances will likely be impressed should you load up <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/05/28/ar-space-invaders/">Zenitum's <em>Space InvadAR</em></a> app on your Android-equipped device: <br />
<ol>
    <li>Using a picture of the Earth, it creates a pretty neat augmented reality overlay which forces you to defend the planet from a neverending onslaught of circling extraterrestrials. Line up your shot using your mobile device's camera, and drop your favorite <em>Independence Day</em> quote as you blast aliens from the sky.</li>
    <li>The app itself <a href="http://www.zenitum.com/our-work/space-invadar/">costs $25</a>, so your friends should be wowed by your apparently vast amounts of expendable income.</li>
</ol>

A trusted Joystiq source has confirmed that Taito's mobile and iPhone game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-infinity-gene"><em>Space Invaders Infinity Gene</em></a> is coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PSN. Further corroborating our source's intel is Australian ratings board the OFLC, which has published a <a href="http://www.classification.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/5b6ebdff7f5b9a24ca2575ca00062226/0ab64b933e55284bca257727005d770e!OpenDocument">rating</a> for an unspecified "multiplatform" release of <em>Infinity Gene</em>. Ubisoft, which distributes Square Enix titles in Australia is listed as the publisher. (Square Enix is the parent company of Taito.) <br />
<br />
With some neat functionality -- the iPhone version lets players generate levels based on their stored music -- and an HD facelift, we'd be willing to bet <em>Space Invaders Infinity Gene</em> wouldn't find much opposition on Xbox Live Arcade and PSN. Previously, Taito released a version of its handheld series <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> on XBLA to positive reception.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/19/rumor-space-invaders-infinity-gene-cloned-for-xbla-and-psn/">Rumor: Space Invaders Infinity Gene cloned for XBLA and PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 19 May 2010 17:02:00 EST. According to a recent <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/2010/03/space-invaders-movie-midway-marlowe.html">report from the L.A. Times</a>, Warner Bros. is in talks with Japanese game developer Taito to secure the rights for a film adaptation of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders"><em>Space Invaders</em></a>. The Times speculates the film would be a big-budget action-blockbuster, helmed by prolific producers of big-budget action-blockbusters, such as Mark Gordon, Jason Blum and Guymon Casady.<br />
<br />
In other news, we're planning on doing our own version of <em>Space Invaders</em> pretty soon, only it will be about us, attempting to invade outer space, because we don't want to live on this <em>stupid, terrible planet</em> anymore.<br />

<em>Space Invaders Extreme Z</em> is available on DSiWare now (in Japan only) for 500 DSi Points. Explaining Project Natal's mantra of fun and accessibility can't be the easiest task in the world, especially since it has to be done while ricocheting about in front of a motion-detecting camera. And despite that, creative director Kudo Tsunoda makes it look easy, calmly elaborating on Natal's goals and features while he dances about in a room full of journalists. <br />
<br />
We've heard it before: Natal is Microsoft's sledgehammer, swung straight into the walls that years of button pressing and circle strafing have slowly erected around traditional gaming. We've seen similar attacks from Nintendo's Wii, as well as from the massive genre of the Instrument Protagonist, but Microsoft is hoping for much more than a dent. In the wall. Do you get it?<em> It's like a metaphor and stuff</em>. <br />
<br />
The bizarre problem with Natal in its early state is that it, um, works. The technology is clearly functional -- heck, it's vaguely magical -- which makes the absence of truly compelling software almost immediately disappointing. Anyone can simply hop in front of the camera, which never seems to stop and ask, "Who are you and where did you come from -- and why are you so fat compared to the last person?" You're recognized within seconds and can start playing a moment later. And then you slap flying balls.<br />
<br />
It's a bit of an unfair demand considering the product's not due until 2010, but the impatience is testament to the convincing nature of the technology itself. In the meantime, Microsoft is exploring Natal's tricks in two existing games: <span style="font-style: italic;">Beautiful Katamari</span> and <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Extreme</span>.<br />

We won't feign ignorance to the fact that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/iPhone/">iPhone</a> isn't the only mobile device on the market with a growing game library. Taito seems to agree, <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/08/27/taito-is-in-the-blackberry-games-business/">refusing to leave Blackberry users in the dark</a> for new gaming content. The classic game dev has revealed two of its prized licenses -- <em>Space Invaders</em> and <em>Bust-a-Move</em> -- are now available for the working man/woman's mobile device. Each title is available for $4.99 and features two control schemes: Touch screen control and using the device's keys. So, the next time you spot a frustrated business person in public eyeballing a Blackberry, just assume they're trying to beat a high score and not doing <em>real</em> work.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/30/space-invaders-bust-a-move-headed-to-blackberry/">Space Invaders, Bust-a-Move headed to Blackberry</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 30 Aug 2009 13:30:00 EST. At first glance, <em>Infinity Gene</em> seems to be the same kind of flashy techno <em>Invaders</em> found in <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-extreme"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a>, but the new game takes a different route that offers a customizable experience.<br /><br />Starting out as classic <em>Invaders, Infinity Gene</em> changes over time, adding new graphics, abilities, levels, and gameplay to an "evolutionary tree." The game even allows players to move <span style="font-style: italic;">up and down</span> on the <span style="font-style: italic;">scrolling </span>screen. <span style="font-style: italic;">Infinity Gene</span> also generates levels from songs stored on the iPhone or iPod. It's the freshest idea to hit <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders </span>since, well, <span style="font-style: italic;">Extreme,</span> and it's available now for $5. We're <span style="font-style: italic;">just</span> a little excited. See the trailer after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2009/07/28/space-invaders-infinity-gene-wow/">Touch Arcade</a>]<br /><br /><strong>Space Invaders Infinity Gene</strong> (Taito, $4.99): <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=323665063&amp;mt=8&amp;uo=6"><img width="61" height="15" border="0" alt="Space Invaders Infinity Gene" src="http://ax.itunes.apple.com/images/badgeitunes61x15dark.gif" /></a><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/space-invaders-infinity-gene-propagates-to-iphone-today/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Space Invaders Infinity Gene propagates to iPhone today</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/28/space-invaders-infinity-gene-propagates-to-iphone-today/">Space Invaders Infinity Gene propagates to iPhone today</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Jul 2009 23:30:00 EST. When video games collide with do-it-yourself know-how and <em>just a little bit of magic</em>, <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/04/23/hold-it-we-dont-object-to-these-phoenix-wright-shoes/">wonderful</a> <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/05/05/noby-noby-sushi/">things</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/22/half-life-fridge-magnets-open-portal-to-alternate-8-bit-dimensio/">happen</a>. Case in point, just look at those <a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_1&amp;listing_id=25370705&amp;ga_search_query=pac&amp;ga_search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5602388"><em>Ms. Pac-Man</em> shoes</a> and <a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vt_related_1&amp;listing_id=25376807"><em>Space Invaders</em> soaps</a> (which we have arranged in a single image for dramatic effect). With shoes like that, just <em>walking</em> becomes a game -- which it normally isn't, despite <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/psa-personal-trainer-walking-ambles-into-stores-next-week/">what Nintendo tells you</a> -- as Pinky and Ms. Pac-Man engage in a cat-and-mouse chase all day long.<br /><br />And then, when the long day is done and it's time to get clean, you'll have to defend yourself from a squadron of soapy space invaders. What better way to stave off the glycerine-infused hordes than to slowly melt them away until you have to snuff them out in the shower drain? Such is the fate of all soaps, but <em>especially</em> invading soaps from space.<br /><br />Incidentally, if you want a pair of <em>Ms. Pac-Man</em> shoes of your own, the creators, Em &amp; Sprout, have a few left in stock. There are a handful of <em>Space Invaders</em> soaps left too -- from the same company that brought us <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/delicious-and-clean-game-controller-chocolates-soap/">these</a> -- so get a move on if you want some. Otherwise you'll have to hope they get restocked, or we suppose you <em>could</em> live without them.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.wonderlandblog.com/wonderland/2009/05/pacman-maryjanes-and-space-invaders-soap.html">Wonderland</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_1&amp;listing_id=25370705&amp;ga_search_query=pac&amp;ga_search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5602388">Source</a>: Em &amp; Sprout - Ms Pac-Man Mary Janes<br /><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vt_related_1&amp;listing_id=25376807">Source</a>: Digital Soaps - Space Invaders soap set<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/23/ms-pac-man-shoes-space-invaders-soap-not-news/">Ms. Pac-Man shoes, Space Invaders soap, not news</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 23 May 2009 00:15:00 EST. Games have come a long way since joystick jockeys first spent hours dropping quarters into <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders">Space Invaders</a></em>. Now on the heels of <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/04/this-wednesday-zombie-wranglers-arkanoid-and-space-invaders/">XBLA debut</a>, series' creator Tomohiro Nishikado has spoken out on the state of games today, observing that originality has suffered despite advances in technology.<br /><br />"I think the focus on unique concepts and gameplay has waned with the evolution of technology," commented Nishikado in a <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/05/66479041/1">recent interview</a>. While the iconic game designer praised new tech for allowing developers to create most anything they can imagine, he called out the industry for churning out "replicated gameplay formats and concepts," adding that "people are growing tired of playing the same thing." We'd be hard pressed to argue the point, though with games like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/noby-noby-boy"><em>Noby Noby Boy</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/noby-noby-boy">Rhythm Heaven</a></em> (a game Nishikado calls "excellent"), we still think there is a spark of originality out there. When we think of exercise and gaming (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/exergaming">exergaming</a>), we think <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/wii-fit"><em>Wii Fit</em></a>, much like most of you, we imagine. On the other extreme, it offers a game that happens to be ancient for the brand new Virtual Console Arcade service.<br />

    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/vc/vc_zelm/index.html">The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask</a></em> (Nintendo 64, 1 player, 1,200 Wii Points)</li>
    <li><em>Space Invaders</em> (Virtual Console Arcade, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)</li>
</ul>
As if <em>Majora's Mask</em> weren't enough, WiiWare is loaded with stuff, not all of which is <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/18/joystiq-review-evasive-space-wiiware/">Evasive Space</a>!</em> In fact, two welcome retro revivals make their debuts, <em>hopefully</em> hastening their arrival outside of Japan.<br />

This has been a really great week to be a Nintendo fan. It's been a really great week to be a Virtual Console fan in particular -- when was the last time we could say something like that? The week has just gotten a <em>lot</em> better with the release of the list of upcoming Virtual Console releases for Japan.<br /><br />Why? Two reasons. First: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/16/man-undertakes-massive-majoras-mask-mission/">The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask</a>.</em> Like <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/02/26/vc-monday-madness-ocarina-and-the-rest/">Ocarina of Time</a>,</em> it costs a painful 1,200 Wii Points -- and like <em>Ocarina of Time</em>, it will probably drop to the usual 1,000 in North America. Second, and possibly even <em>more</em> exciting: <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/30/virtually-overlooked-phantasy-star/">Phantasy Star</a>!</em> The Sega Master System RPG masterpiece is <em>also</em> coming to the Virtual Console. Maybe it's not a big deal to those of you with <em>Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection,</em> but personally, it's<em> awesome news.</em><br /><br />We fully expect to see both of these games in North America soon. Neither SMS games nor N64 games seem to take long to make it overseas. Also of interest: Hudson's PC Engine port of the NES <em>Ninja Gaiden.</em> And the arcade version of <em>Space Invaders</em>, which marks the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/vc-monday-madness-space-invaders-and-forgotten-worlds/">third</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/japanese-virtual-console-march-lineup-revealed/">time</a></em> the "original" <em>Space Invaders</em> has been released on VC.<br /> <br />The full list is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/27/majoras-mask-phantasy-star-on-japanese-virtual-console-in-apri/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Majora's Mask, Phantasy Star on Japanese Virtual Console in April</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/27/majoras-mask-phantasy-star-on-japanese-virtual-console-in-apri/">Majora's Mask, Phantasy Star on Japanese Virtual Console in April</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Mar 2009 13:00:00 EST. I keep telling people I played <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-extreme/"><em>Space Invaders Extreme</em></a> at GDC, and they all say the same thing: "Dude, that's been out for a while." But, A-HA! It hasn't. The kicker is that the DS and PSP versions have been out for so long that the DS version already has a <a href="http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/everybody-dance-now-space-invaders-extreme-2-trailer/">sequel out</a> (in Japan), but the XBLA version is brand new and comes out at the end of April. "Yeah," you're saying, "but it's a downloadable <em>Space Invaders</em> title. What do I care?" Well, if you like having fun, then you'll care aplenty. <br />
<br />
The game scored 84 and 85 on the PSP and DS respectively on <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/search/process?sort=relevance&amp;termType=all&amp;ts=space+invaders+extreme&amp;ty=0&amp;x=0&amp;y=0">Metacritic</a>, and the XBLA version just improves on those versions. We spent some hands-on time with the game at GDC, and you can see what we thought after the break. Peep the new video above, the gallery below, and blast your way on in.<br />

You should probably avoid the music video we've embedded after the break. "Happy Up Here," the latest single from Norwegian electronic (and possibly electronic Norwegian) group <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royksopp">R&ouml;yksopp</a>, concocts an inoffensive, lighthearted and worst of all, <em>catchy</em>, sequence of bleeps and bloops. It's exactly the sort of thing that wafts out of someone's cubicle and ends up infecting every brain in the office, generating impromptu humming and arming those whistling, <em>morning people</em> with yet another way to annoy the rest of us. <br /><br />But it also features cute invaders ... from space! We think that's from a video game.<br /><br />[Thanks, V]<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/04/space-invaders-are-happy-up-there-in-royksopps-new-music-vid/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Space Invaders are happy up there in Royksopp's new music vid</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/04/space-invaders-are-happy-up-there-in-royksopps-new-music-vid/">Space Invaders are happy up there in Royksopp's new music vid</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 04 Mar 2009 17:57:00 EST. Just a few weeks after the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/10/vc-tuesday-bubble-bobble-wii-rises-to-the-top/"><em>Bubble Bobble Wii</em></a>, Taito just sneaked out a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/WiiWare/">WiiWare</a> version of its sequel, <em>Rainbow Islands!</em> As with <em>Bubble Bobble</em>, we <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/06/bubble-bobble-rainbow-islands-and-tons-more-japanese-wiiware-a/">knew that it was coming</a> at some point, but we had yet to see any screens or gameplay information. Now it's out, and it appears to feature timed ascents up huge, vertical stages. Also out this week: a WiiWare version of <em>The Game of Life</em>.<br />

    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wsaj/index.html">Madsecta</a> (Onslaught</em>) (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)</li>
    <li><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wjgj/index.html"><em>Jinsei Game</em></a> (1-4 players, 1,000 Wii Points)</li>
</ul>
In other Taito news, today marks the release of the <em>second</em> version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/18/vc-monday-madness-space-invaders-and-forgotten-worlds/"><em>Space Invaders: The Original Game</em></a> on the Japanese Virtual Console. This time, the PC Engine version of the ancient shooter is being released -- at exactly the same cost as the Super Famicom/SNES version, making the decision between the two basically a matter of platform preference. Unless silly anime-girl backgrounds make a big difference, in which case it's PC Engine all the way.<br />

Taito has announced that iPhone and iPod Touch users can access versions of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=space+invaders">Space Invaders</a> </em>and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/cooking-mama"><em>Cooking Mama</em></a> in the app store now. The <em>Space Invaders</em> game available in the app store is of the classic variety, but features "full use of the motion sensor and other iPhone 3G and iPod Touch input methods." As for <em>Cooking Mama</em>, the version available for the iPhone and iPod Touch includes "both favorite recipes from past console installments as well as a variety of dishes completely new to the series" and has been enhanced to "make the most of the iPhone 3G / iPod touch's multi-touch screen accelerometer." You can find <em>Cooking Mama </em>and <em>Space Invaders</em> in the app store now for $6.99 and $4.99, respectively.<br /><br />In addition to new games for Apple platforms, Taito has also announced plans to support Android. T-Mobile users will be able to pick up <em>Arkanoid</em> and <em>Space Invaders</em> now for $5.99 each.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-mama-iphone-ipod/">Cooking Mama (iPhone/iPod)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-mama-iphone-ipod/#1391304"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/cookingmama_03i_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-mama-iphone-ipod/#1391303"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/cookingmama_02i_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/cooking-mama-iphone-ipod/#1391302"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/cookingmama_01i_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-iphone-ipod/">Space Invaders (iPhone/iPod)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-iphone-ipod/#1391321"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/spaceinvaders_01i_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-iphone-ipod/#1391320"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/space-invaders_03i_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/space-invaders-iphone-ipod/#1391319"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/02/space-invaders_02i_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/27/space-invaders-and-cooking-mama-come-to-iphone-ipod-touch-3g/">Taito reveals Space Invaders, Cooking Mama games for iPhone, iPod, Android</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 Feb 2009 15:55:00 EST. Admittedly, it hasn't been very long, but we've still been in total agony. <br /><br />As expected, <span style="font-style: italic;">SIE 2</span> doesn't stray far from the original formula: the player shoots at Invaders of various colors, shapes, and sizes, with the sounds of the shots syncing to both the thumping and psychedelic backgrounds. You can see the new "bingo" system in the beginning of the video, in which a bonus round is unlocked by shooting Invaders of the same color, corresponding to a line of colored blocks in a square.<br /><br />And now for some wishful thinking: who thinks the announcer is just part of the video and not in the actual game?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/first-hypnotic-footage-of-space-invaders-extreme-2/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>First hypnotic footage of Space Invaders Extreme 2</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/02/23/first-hypnotic-footage-of-space-invaders-extreme-2/">First hypnotic footage of Space Invaders Extreme 2</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 23 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST. After NCSX pretty much <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/29/space-invaders-extreme-2-is-so-real-you-can-preorder-it/">confirmed its existence</a>, Famitsu has come to our rescue with some new details and screens for <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-extreme-2/">Space Invaders Extreme 2</a>.</em> We know the game's power-up system is getting the once-over and being fleshed out a bit more in the sequel, and that a Bingo Fever mode is being added. Considering <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/24/ds-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/">how great the first game was</a>, you can bet we're extra excited about this.<br /><br />Hit up Famitsu <a href="http://www.famitsu.com/game/coming/1221667_1407.html">here</a> to check out the screens and details. Or maybe you <em>had</em> played it before and the new sequel just inspired you to pick it back up? Does it still hold any appeal to you?<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/03/ds-daily-space-invaders-moderate/">DS Daily: Space Invaders Moderate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 03 Jan 2009 10:30:00 EST. <br />My fingers hurt. If <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> is anything, it's an absolute workout for the fingers, a test of endurance, passion, and an opportunity for developer Taito to take an old formula and crank things up to 11. Very rarely does slapping on the word 'extreme' actually mean anything, but this latest incarnation of <em>Space Invaders</em> is an exception to that rule, as my sore thumbs can attest.<br /><br />Did you miss out on the original <em>Space Invaders</em>? The classic was before your time, perhaps, or deemed unworthy for whatever coins you could bleed out of your piggy bank. Dry your tears, friend! This extreme update of a retro classic is your greatest chance to find peace in these discordant times. Come along with this week's edition of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/category/gaming-to-go/">Gaming to Go</a> to see why saving quarters all those years ago might have been a good idea after all.*<br /><br />*So now you can buy this, see? Not because the original was bad or ... nevermind.<br /><br /><br /> <style type="text/css"> #ninbutton { border-style: solid; border-color: #000; border-width: 2px; background-color: #BBB; color: #000; text-decoration: none; width: 100px; text-align: center; padding: 2px 2px 2px 2px; margin: 2px 2px 2px 2px; } .buttontext { color: #000; text-decoration: none; font: bold 14pt Helvetica; } #ninbutton:hover { text-decoration: none; color: #BBB; background-color: #000; } </style> <center>

Want a cheap stocking stuffer for a PSP owning friend? Well, <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em> might fit the bill. <a href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=aOUs5qjvzDc&amp;offerid=121938.645906005&amp;type=10&amp;subid=">GameStop</a> stores are selling it for only $10. It launched at $20, and that was already a bargain. Now, at $10, there's little excuse not to have it in your collection. It is a difficult game, though -- read <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/05/psp-fanboy-review-space-invaders-extreme/">our review</a> to find out more.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.cheapassgamer.com/?f=620">CAG</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/17/deal-of-the-day-space-invaders-extreme-for-10/">Deal of the Day: Space Invaders Extreme for $10</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Dec 2008 12:00:00 EST. The PEGI watchdogs at <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2008/12/15/space-invaders-extreme-also-invading-playstation-network/">Siliconera</a> have discovered yet another PlayStation Network downloadable: <em>Space Invaders Extreme</em>. Taito's re-imagining of the classic arcade shooter got tons of accolades for its psychedelic visuals and music when the game launched on PSP and DS earlier this year. Backbone Entertainment will be responsible for bringing the action from the tiny screens to the big 1080p screen. No other details are known at this time.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/15/space-invaders-extreme-heading-to-playstation-network/">Space Invaders Extreme heading to PlayStation Network</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 10:45:00 EST. Between Virtual Console and WiiWare, an astounding <em>six</em> new (or new to Wii) games are available in Japan today. Of course, one of those games is <em>Atlantis no Nazo,</em> which was so bad, it was almost released as a sequel to <em>Super Pitfall.</em> The other, <em>Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi (Day of Resurrection)</em> contains the original <em>Invaders</em> along with a "Plus" mode that adds new graphics and powerups. It's also 200 points cheaper than the <em>other</em> version of original <em>Space Invaders.</em><br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/vc/vc_atn/index.html">Atlantis no Nazo</a> </em>(Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)</li>
    <li><em><a href="http://vc-pce.com/jpn/j/title/fukkatu.html">Space Invaders: Fukkatsu no Hi</a> </em>(PC Engine, 1 player, 600 Wii Points)</li>
</ul>
The WiiWare game you're most likely to care about is <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/10/23/the-robots-are-coming-overturn-hits-japanese-wiiware-next-month/">Overturn</a>,</em> the Balance Board-compatible, online robot fighting game. We like <em>Yomikikase Asobi Wii,</em> the interactive <em>Momotarou</em> storybook, but it's got pretty tough competition from <em>online robot fighting.</em><br />
<ul>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wotj/index.html">Overturn</a> </em>(1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)<br /></li>
    <li><em><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wpij/index.html">Pit Crew Panic!</a> </em>(1-4 players, 500 Wii Points)<br /></li>
    <li><a href="http://www.nintendo.co.jp/wii/wiiware/wb7j/index.html"><em>Hamaru Billiards</em></a> (1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)<br /></li>

It's fairly depressing to see Nintendo of Japan adopting Nintendo of America's stance toward the Virtual Console (that stance being "there probably don't need to be many games on it.") At least the ones coming out are reasonably interesting! Well, except for another <em>Wonder Boy.</em> <br /><br />We're definitely excited about Konami's <em>Salamander</em> on the Famicom, because it means we <em>may</em> see the American version, <em>Life Force</em>, soon! One of the other Famicom releases, <em>Atlantis no Nazo</em>, is featured in the latest <a href="http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives/2008/11/26/famicom-dojo-episode-5-microphone-roundup/"><em>Famicom Dojo</em></a> video.<br /><br />Other interesting additions include <em>Nobunaga's Ambition</em> on the Super Famicom<em> (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/27/koei-strategy-pair-rated-by-esrb/">what a coincidence!</a></em>) and a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonze_Adventure">Taito platformer</a> called <em>Jigoku Meguri</em> whose title translates to <em>Tour of Hell.</em> The full list is after the break!<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/28/life-force-nobunaga-more-on-japanese-vc-in-december/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Life Force, Nobunaga, more on Japanese VC in December</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/28/life-force-nobunaga-more-on-japanese-vc-in-december/">Life Force, Nobunaga, more on Japanese VC in December</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 28 Nov 2008 11:50:00 EST. <br />This week's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/friday">PAL Virtual Console</a> line-up isn't short on quality, but it represents fairly <em>awful</em> value. As dreamy as we find any <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Slug</span> title, there are cheaper ways to play all three of this week's offerings. <br /><br />Want <span style="font-style: italic;">Metal Slug 2</span>? We'd recommend picking up <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/12/21/metareview-metal-slug-anthology/">this</a>. Fancy having your delicate gamer's ego rudely kicked in by <span style="font-style: italic;">Forgotten World</span>s? There's an <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps2/capcomclassicscollection">excellent compilation</a> out there for a bunch of platforms that costs <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Capcom-Classic-Collection-PS2/dp/B000BLE99G">peanuts</a> and comes with another 20 or so games. If you can't find <span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders</span> for less than &pound;6/&euro;8, you're probably reading the wrong website. Better still: lavish those points on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/wii-fanboy-review-space-invaders-get-even/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Space Invaders Get Even!</span></a>.<br />

This Monday, those of us that weren't lucky enough to already receive <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/space-invaders-get-even"><em>Space Invaders Get Even</em></a> will finally be able to download this very awesome game. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/square-enix">Square Enix</a> dished out a press release stating as much, assuring those of us who've been biting our fingernails down to the bone whilst waiting for the game that our time is near. For 500 Wii Points, you can bet that we'll be picking this one up.<br /><br />So, who's going to download this come December 1st? Have you read <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/10/wii-fanboy-review-space-invaders-get-even/">our review</a> yet?<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/25/space-invaders-get-even-with-north-america-dec-1st/">Space Invaders Get Even (with North America) Dec 1st</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 Nov 2008 14:41:00 EST. It looks like we're going to have to stop by the wheelbarrow store on our way home today, because the Virtual Console is going to need one to carry its <em>giant balls</em>. How giant, you ask? Here's what we were greeted with when we checked Nintendo's weekly release:<br /><br />"<em>SPACE INVADERS: The Original Game</em> (Super NES, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points)" <br /><br />No, seriously. That's what it says. It's pretty ballsy from the outset, but it only gets progressively more so as you examine the listing. (1) They spell it in all caps, like "Yes, <em>that</em> SPACE INVADERS." (2) They follow that up with "The Original Game," as if to clarify that yes, they are, in fact, asking for eight dollars to play a game from the Carter administration. (3) They actually list it <em>before</em> the perfectly acceptable <em>Forgotten Worlds</em> (Genesis, 1-2 players, 800 Wii Points), today's other release.<br /><br />... Come to think of it, we're not even sure there's a wheelbarrow big enough.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/space-invaders-from-forgotten-worlds-on-virtual-console/">Space Invaders from Forgotten Worlds on Virtual Console</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Nov 2008 09:30:00 EST. EX-TERM-IN-ATE! EX-TERM-IN-ATE! Wait, no, those are the other ones. But whatever. The point is: after hearing nothing about <em>Space Invaders Get Even!</em> for months, the game has randomly appeared on the European and Australian Wii Shops. We are unashamedly jigging with joy as we type this. And the extra-terrestial goodness doesn't stop there, for <em>Alien Crush Returns</em> has also joined the line-up. Needless to say, we wholeheartedly welcome our new rulers (of all our spare time).<br />
<br />
The other game is <em>Brain Challenge</em>. Sorry, <em>Brain Challenge</em>.<br />
