Microsoft thinks that's just <em>the dumbest</em>, so the company's blowing the doors off of its upcoming E3 presser - at least virtually - with both Spike TV and Xbox Live streaming the event for all to see. Democracy!<br /><br />Spike and Xbox Live's coverage begins one day ahead of the big show on Monday, June 4 - Microsoft likes to kick things off before anyone else at E3, you see. Interested parties can tune in at 12:30PM ET/ 9:30AM PT to catch the whole thing live. Keep an eye out for us in the crowd! You can tell us apart from everyone else because we're all 11 feet tall, by the way.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/04/microsofts-e3-presser-to-stream-through-xbox-live-spike-tv/">Microsoft's E3 presser to stream through Xbox Live, Spike TV</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 May 2012 12:30:00 EST. The final game is due this summer.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bellator-mma-onslaught-xbla-psn/">Bellator MMA Onslaught (XBLA/PSN)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bellator-mma-onslaught-xbla-psn/#4889202"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/screenshot1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bellator-mma-onslaught-xbla-psn/#4889203"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/screenshot2resize_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bellator-mma-onslaught-xbla-psn/#4889204"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/screenshot3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bellator-mma-onslaught-xbla-psn/#4889205"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/screenshot4resize_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/10/bellator-mma-onslaught-brings-arcade-style-grappling-to-xbla-and/">Bellator MMA Onslaught brings arcade-style grappling to XBLA and PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Mar 2012 15:00:00 EST. Over the last couple of years, Spike TV's annual Video Game Awards ceremony has become a launching pad for more than teleprompter dialogue and stilted celebrity sight reads. Publishers are utilizing the exceedingly televised event as an opportunity to reveal new titles and IPs; take <em>The Last of Us</em>, for example.<br />
<br />
Beyond the fact that it's a PS3 exclusive and will have something to do with ants, rioting and/or the apocalypse, <em>The Last of Us</em> is as much of a mystery to us as it is to everyone else. Glean what you can from the teaser above, and visit <a href="http://www.lastofus.com/">the official site</a> for a short clip of an ant licking its butt.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/04/ps3-exclusive-the-last-of-us-to-debut-at-spike-vgas/">PS3 exclusive 'The Last of Us' to debut at Spike VGAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 04 Dec 2011 14:30:00 EST. Do you take breaks from long sessions with <em>Uncharted 2</em> to wonder why you're so, so good at it? Perhaps your other hobbies include "being an on-air presence" and "having perfectly coiffed hair?" Then you're a shoo-in to participate in Spike TV's upcoming television "special" dedicated to this November's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/uncharted-3-drakes-deception">Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception</a>.</em><br />
<br />
According to a listing that seeks show participants, you must be available in early October for taping, be a fan of adventure, or a "video game enthusiast," a "puzzle solver," or a "risk taker." Presumably, risk-taking adventurers with a taste for video games will be given first priority.<br />
<br />
In order to prove your worthiness for inclusion, <a href="mailto: spikecasting@spike.com">shoot an email</a> to Spike with a "link to a video, picture or paragraph explaining why <em>you</em> are the ultimate <em>Uncharted</em> fan who deserves to be featured on the show." And no, scaling the Spike TV corporate building and making your way to the company head's office undetected is <em>not</em> a good way to prove yourself, regardless of the theme.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/uncharted-3-gets-its-own-spike-tv-special-contestants-needed/">Uncharted 3 gets its own Spike TV special, contestants needed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 31 Aug 2011 14:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/deadliest-warrior-legends"><em>Deadliest Warrior: Legends</em></a> may be old (spiked) hat for Xbox 360 owners, but for those of us with access only to a PS3, the game has yet to arrive. That's all about to change, as 345 Games tells Joystiq that its latest release will head to the PlayStation Network Store on July 26, pointy blade-equipped staff and all.<br />
<br />
Like its XBLA launch, <em>Deadliest Warrior: Legends</em> will run you $10 when it arrives in the coming weeks. No explanation was offered for the disparity in launch between 360 and PS3, but we're told Sun Tzu sends his sincerest apologies.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/11/deadliest-warrior-legends-to-pulverize-psn-on-july-26/">Deadliest Warrior: Legends to pulverize PSN on July 26</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 11 Jul 2011 16:40:00 EST. Gone are the ambiguous archetypes of Pirates, Vikings and Centurions -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/deadliest-warrior-legends"><em>Deadliest Warrior: Legends</em></a> will feature nine real-ass soldiers pulled from history, Bill and Ted-style. Check out the list of fighters, as well as some concept art for their inevitably brutalized character models, after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/say-hello-to-deadliest-warrior-legends-nine-surly-fighters/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Say hello to nine surly fighters in Deadliest Warrior: Legends</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/01/say-hello-to-deadliest-warrior-legends-nine-surly-fighters/">Say hello to nine surly fighters in Deadliest Warrior: Legends</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 01 Jul 2011 19:30:00 EST. Emboldened by the success of last year's anachronistic fighter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/deadliest-warrior"><em>Deadliest Warrior: The Game</em></a> (which has sold over 400,000 downloads to date across XBLA and PSN), MTV Networks Entertainment has announced the opening of a new development studio called 345 Games. We spoke with Dan Yang and Prithvi Virasinghe from the newly incorporated studio about its plans to create game adaptations of Spike TV and Comedy Central programming. They revealed that they're starting with one distinct project from each network: <em>Deadliest Warrior: Legends</em> and <em>Ugly Americans: Apocalypsegeddon</em>.<br />
<br />
The first, a follow-up to last year's <em>Deadliest</em> title, will feature all new fighters pulled from across the fullness of time, and more than twice as many arenas as the series' first installment. Each warrior type will be represented by titular legends such as William Wallace or Shaka Zulu, who can lead their armies in the new "Generals" campaign mode. Skirmishes between factions in this mode are carried out using the same battle simulator used in the show, and players can affect their troops with certain "X-Factors," such as training exercises, or unique General strategies.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/new-deadliest-warrior-and-ugly-americans-titles-coming-to-xbla-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Deadliest Warrior and Ugly Americans titles coming to XBLA and PSN under 345 Games</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/04/07/new-deadliest-warrior-and-ugly-americans-titles-coming-to-xbla-a/">New Deadliest Warrior and Ugly Americans titles coming to XBLA and PSN under 345 Games</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 13:36:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/spike-vga-2010-trailers-and-screenshots-roundup/">Spike VGAs</a> may have put on a brave front this year, but the ratings have once again shown a decline, reports <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/technotainment/2010/12/how-did-spikes-vgas-do-ratings-wise.html">Variety</a>. 627,000 people tuned in on Saturday night, a three percent drop from last year -- about 20,000 viewers. To help put that figure into context, the show's debut in 2007 enjoyed a much more substantial 921,000 viewers.<br />
<br />
It wasn't all a total downer, though (unless you actually <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/11/spike-vgas-2010-the-liveblog/">watched the show</a>, we guess). The VGAs actually saw a rise in viewers within key demographics. The Neil Patrick Harris-hosted show received a 12 percent boost in adult viewers aged 18 to 49, from 370,000 last year to 450,000, while 18- to 34-year-old viewers increased in number by five percent, from 278,000 viewers last year to 292,000 this year. Men aged 18 to 34 showed the most significant rise -- 15 percent over last year, from 281,000 viewers to 251,000.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/vga-ratings-fall-for-fourth-year-except-among-younger-and-male/">VGA ratings fall for fourth year, but rise among younger and male viewers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Dec 2010 19:40:00 EST. There are few people on this planet we admire more than one Mr. Neil Patrick Harris, the length of whose name is matched only by the depth of his comedic talent -- which is to say that there's <em>a lot of it</em>. However, we're of two minds about how to react to the announcement that NPH would be fulfilling hosting duties for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/spike-vga-2010">2010 Spike VGAs</a>, which, once again, we have been <em>dragooned</em> into watching and reporting on this year. (Man, <em>this job sometimes</em>, we swear.)<br />
<br />
Again, we're big, big fans of Neil (who provided one of the four Spider-voices in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/spider-man-shattered-dimensions"><em>Shattered Dimensions</em></a>), and his bit during last year's VGA ceremony was one of the highlights -- but the first time he busts out some unconvincing nerd-speak, or gets danced all-up-on by models with award winners' names painted <em>on their torsos</em>, we're going to have a full-on panic attack. We've got all our fingers crossed that those won't occur, though leaving our fingers in that position might make it a little difficult to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/liveblogging-the-2009-spike-video-game-awards/">type snarky comments</a> about the rest of the show. <em>Hmmm</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/06/neil-patrick-harris-to-host-vgas-hopefully-in-a-legen-wait-fo/">Neil Patrick Harris to host VGAs, hopefully in a legen- (wait for it) dary manner</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 06 Dec 2010 15:30:00 EST. BioWare will reveal its next game at Spike's Video Game Awards on Saturday, December 11. From the one screen we received from EA and the teaser (posted after the break), we suspect it might be called <em>Mass of Honor</em><em>: Dragunov Age</em>. Yeah, let's go with that for now.<br />
<br />
Along with the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/BioWare/">BioWare</a> reveal, VGA emcee Geoff Keighley also <a href="http://twitter.com/geoffkeighley/status/4886805321093120">tweeted</a> that the event would feature a new trailer for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/batman-arkham-city"><em>Batman: Arkham City</em></a>. The show should also reveal the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/08/guillermo-del-toro-thq-spike-vga/">Guillermo Del Toro project over at THQ</a> and maybe, just <em>maybe</em>, something involving <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/16/no-kinect-in-gears-of-war-3-bleszinski-assures/"><em>Gears of War</em> and Kinect</a>.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: The sharp eyes of commenter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/profile/2639550/">Arth Vader</a> picked up that the gun in the pic is either the <a href="http://na.llnet.bioware.cdn.ea.com/u/f/eagames/bioware/masseffect2/resources/assets/info/dlc/aegis-03-p.jpg">M-29 Incisor Sniper Rifle</a> from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mass-effect-2"><em>Mass Effect 2</em></a> Aegis Pack DLC or a reused asset. If it is the <a href="http://cghub.com/files/Image/073001-074000/73681/614_realsize.jpg">M-29</a>, it would imply the game will be <em>Mass Effect</em> related.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 2</strong>: Recall that EA said last February that something "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/08/ea-something-far-reaching-coming-for-mass-effect-in-early-201/">far-reaching</a>" was coming to <em>Mass Effect</em> during the fourth quarter of the publisher's current fiscal year -- or in layman's terms: January 1 - March 31, 2011.<br />
<br />
<strong><img vspace="4" hspace="4" border="0" align="right" style="padding-left: 10px;" alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/11/bioware-qr-code-111710.jpg" />Update 3:</strong> Okay, now things are just getting nerdy. BioWare blasted out the adjacent QR code <a href="http://twitter.com/biofeed/status/4907337928146944">on Twitter</a> which, when decoded, spits out a string of 1s and 0s. When you convert this binary code (we told you: nerdy), it reads: 55.845. Of course, as everyone knows, 55.845 is the atomic <em>mass</em> of iron. Maybe the presence of the word "mass" in our findings isn't quite enough to go on, but we're sure you'll agree that the presence of the word "mass" coupled with <a href="http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5898628/1/Mass_Effect_Iron_Rebirth">a piece of fan fiction titled <em>Mass Effect: Iron Rebirth</em></a> is practically a smoking M-29 Incisor Sniper Rifle.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 4:</strong> And <a href="http://twitter.com/biofeed/status/4912647975739392">another QR code</a> has been loosed upon the unsuspecting people of Twitter. This one is again some binary that translates into: -128.5&deg;F. Converted to Celsius, that becomes -89.16666666666667&deg;C. "The coldest temperature ever recorded on earth is -89.2 degrees Celsius (-128.5 degrees Fahrenheit) at Vostok, Antarctica on July 21, 1983," <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coldest_temperature_recorded_on_Earth">says Wikipedia</a>; and this <a href="http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Vostok"><em>Mass Effect</em> wiki page</a> describes the Vostok solar system as "a medium system with four planets and an asteroid belt," itself named after the Soviet "Vostok Program" that resulted in the first manned space flight. Oh, and that asteroid belt that was mentioned? The wiki page calls it a "metal-rich asteroid." You know what else is metal? That's right, iron!<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 5</strong>: A few folks have also written in about the planet <a href="http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Aequitas">Aequitas</a>, which is also from the <em>Mass Effect</em> universe. Logic train: 1st QR code = 55.845, the atomic mass of iron. 2nd QR code = 128.5. -128.5 deg F = Vostok, Antarctica record-breaking temperature. -128.5 deg F ~= -89 deg C = surface temperature of Aequitas, a planet known for its "famous Iron Canyons."<br />
<br />
<strong>Update 6 11/19/10 5:30pm ET</strong>: It's been a couple of days, but BioWare is back at it dropping <a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=170612789632995&amp;set=a.157703110923963.32829.136219176405690&amp;comments">yet another QR code</a> into the webosphere, this time using Facebook. When read and converted out of binary, this QR reads: "http://www.sis.gov.uk/output/sis-home-welcome.html" which, evidently, is the official site for Britain's Secret Intelligence Service or, as it's also known, MI6. Beyond the two-letter acronym beginning with 'M' and followed by a number format it shares with a would-be ME3, we've got <em>no idea what this means</em>. <br type="_moz" /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/bioware-revealing-new-project-at-vgas-on-december-11/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BioWare revealing new project at VGAs on December 11 [Update: clues coming in!]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/bioware-revealing-new-project-at-vgas-on-december-11/">BioWare revealing new project at VGAs on December 11 [Update: clues coming in!]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 08:43:00 EST. The developer posted a <a href="http://5thcell.com/countdown/">seven-day countdown</a> for the title on its site, revealing in a press release that the end of the countdown -- <strike>Thursday, October 28 at 10pm PDT</strike> Friday, October 29 at 1am EDT and 1am PDT -- will coincide with the reveal of the new title on Spike TV. A brief teaser will also be shown tonight.<br />
<br />
According to the press release, the game will be "a completely new experience for Xbox Live Arcade players." 5TH Cell's Jeremiah Slaczka has previously <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/08/17/5th-cells-next-game-uses-the-source-engine/">told Joystiq</a> that the company's next original game would use the Source Engine. We'll find out more in ... seven days, and counting. <br />
<br />
Update: 5TH Cell informed us that it sent out the incorrect time yesterday. You'll be able to see the reveal on Friday, October 29 at 1am EDT/PDT.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/21/5th-cell-counting-down-to-xbla-announcement/">5TH Cell counting down to XBLA announcement [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 Oct 2010 13:00:00 EST. There are few things I love more in video games than the juxtaposition of two elements that clearly should <em>not</em> be juxtaposed. It's the peculiar desire which first attracted me to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/deadliest-warrior"><em>Deadliest Warrior</em></a>, though, the sincerity of that attraction was questionable. Was I psyched to play a game that finally gave me the chance to see who would emerge victorious in a melee between a Pirate and a Viking? Yes, of course, because that's <em>silly</em>. Was I legitimately excited to play the game itself? Not so much.<br />
<br />
Fortunately, behind all the comedically anachronistic battle pairings is a brilliantly simplistic and entirely entertaining fighting game engine -- one which rewards second-to-second survival instincts rather than a comprehensive knowledge of esoteric, nigh-impossible-to-execute techniques. If you're a fighting game purist, the absence of dash-canceling or air-to-ground linking might put you off. If you've never, <em>ever</em> understood, nor do you possess any desire to ever understand what those things are, then <em>Deadliest Warrior</em> will land right in your wheelhouse.<br />

Okay, honesty time. Most of the preparation for my GDC appointment to check out Pipework Foundation's TV-to-game adaptation <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/deadliest-warrior"><em>Deadliest Warrior</em></a> was spent thinking up jokes about the game's cast of anachronistic characters. "So, what are we looking at," I would snidely remark, "Templars? Cavemen? Wizards? Robots? Robot Cavemen? Grizzly bears?" To which Pipework would politely laugh, as I would insist, "No, seriously. What's the grizzly bear situation?"<br />
<br />
I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the game, so I'd attempt to cajole an entire preview out of this line of questioning. Fortunately, this precaution wasn't necessary, as <em>Deadliest Warrior</em> looks to be a surprisingly competent, enjoyable fighting game, and a welcome addition to the Xbox Live Arcade lineup. Here's the takeaway: Think <em>Bushido </em><em>Blade;</em> but instead of being stuck with controlling boring ol' samurai, there are ninjas, Spartans, Apache, knights and four other yet-to-be-announced warriors (Including, hopefully, <em>wizards</em>).<br />

Good news, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-tester"><em>The Tester</em></a> -- you're off the hook for being the worst idea for a video game-themed game show. Look sharp, Spike TV's recently announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/God-of-War-3/"><em>God of War 3</em></a> promotion/contest <a href="http://www.spike.com/blog/be-last-titan/92566"><em>Last Titan Standing</em></a> -- you're officially <em>on notice</em>.<br />
<br />
According to a recent press release announcing the show's casting call, <em>Last Titan Standing </em>(which airs the night before <em>GoW 3</em>'s March 16 release) pits players against one another for a chance to play the game "before the rest of the world." Kind of a lackluster prize -- what will they be doing to win it? Well, according to the casting call: "The story, puzzles, and straight-up action in <em>God of War 3</em> will be recreated and YOU can be standing in the midst of the battles."<br />
<br />
Thanks, but no thanks, <em>Last Titan Standing</em> -- all things considered, putting up with pre-order panhandling from our friendly neighborhood GameStop clerk is marginally more bearable than getting our arms ripped off by a minotaur.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/02/15/spike-tv-holding-casting-calls-for-nightmarish-god-of-war-3-cont/">Spike TV holding casting calls for nightmarish God of War 3 contest</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 15 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST. Spike TV's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vga-2009">Video Game Awards</a> show isn't simply about celebrating the best of the games industry. No, it plays host to numerous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/spike-vga-2009-wrap-up-the-awards-the-trailers-the-premieres/"><em>WORLD EXCLUSIVE</em> trailers</a>. But, just how many people tuned in to watch? According to a report by Variety's <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2010/01/so-how-did-the-vgas-do-in-the-ratings.html">The Cut Scene</a>, not too many: Roughly 647,000 viewers watched the broadcast in 2009, a 5-percent decrease from 2008's viewership, and a 30-percent decrease from 2007's. When accounting for DVR views, the total jumps to 691,000 viewers. (For comparison's sake, the most recent <a href="http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jan/19/na-golden-globes-ratings-increase/">Golden Globe awards</a> drew in 16.9 million viewers.)<br />
<br />
The online numbers (via GameTrailers.com) should make it pretty clear what Spike TV is doing right -- and what it's doing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/liveblogging-the-2009-spike-video-game-awards/">wrong</a>. The scene pictured above, featuring Mike Tyson and the cast of <em>The Jersey Shore</em>, got a paltry <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/cast-of-spike-tv/59958">16,000 views</a>. The <em>Halo: Reach</em> trailer, on the other hand, got <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/spike-vga-halo-reach/59813"><em>584,000</em></a>. Perhaps if the Video Game Awards focused on, y'know, <em>video games</em>, there would be more reason to stay tuned in.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/25/vga-2009-viewership-down-5-from-2008/">VGA 2009 viewership down 5% from 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Jan 2010 16:30:00 EST. Oh, you've never heard of the television show known as <a href="http://www.spike.com/show/31082"><em>Deadliest Warrior</em></a>? We'll break it down for you: Each episode pits two different types of warriors from different time periods against each other to see who would win in various forms of combat. For instance, one episode might show the results of a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Tk3SlgPxo&amp;feature=fvw">Ninjas vs. Spartans throwdown</a>. One might show how a conflict between Marines and Medieval Knights would resolve itself. Robots vs. Wizards? A bit less likely, but still within the realm of possibilities.<br />
<br />
The VGAs brought great news involving this series -- Pipeworks Software is making a downloadable video game based on it. The announcement was accompanied by a lava-hot trailer showing a battle between a ninja and a heavily armored knight, which we've posted after the jump.<br />
<br />
What? Who wins? The ninja does. <em>Of course</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/deadliest-warrior-video-game-announced-during-vgas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deadliest Warrior video game announced during VGAs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/deadliest-warrior-video-game-announced-during-vgas/">Deadliest Warrior video game announced during VGAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 13 Dec 2009 10:30:00 EST. Forget about your Samuel L. Jacksons and your Jack Blacks -- this year, the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Spike-VGA-2009">Spike Video Game Awards</a> is <em>totally going commando</em> (if you're an awards show, "going commando" means without a host). Our sister site <a href="http://news.bigdownload.com/2009/12/07/spike-tv-no-overall-host-planned-for-2009-video-game-awards/">Big Download</a> got worried recently when no host had yet been announced (the whole Joystiq Network was holding out for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shia-labeouf/">Shia LeBeouf</a>), and got in contact with Spike TV to find out what was up. <br />
<br />
"As of right now, we are going without a host, similarly to what we did for this year's Scream Awards," a representative said. A mess of presenters -- from Tony "I promise I won't talk about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/tony-hawk-ride"><em>Ride</em></a>" Hawk, to Mike "We're terrified and not making any more jokes" Tyson -- have been confirmed for the show, though it seems that none would step up to the host position. <br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Joining games the likes of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-reach">Halo: Reach</a> </em>and 2K's new <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/21/mystery-vga-teaser-revealed-as-spec-ops/">Spec Ops</a> </em>debuting at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Spike-VGA-2009">Spike Video Game Awards</a> is a new installment in the <em>Tron</em> franchise. It's not the first time we've heard of the game -- it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/01/31/rumor-disney-interactive-begins-work-on-new-tron-game/">rumored</a> to be in development back in January of this year. Still, its existence is confirmed by an all-too-brief teaser at <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-tron-spike-tv/59382">GameTrailers</a>, which promises a proper unveiling at Spike's awards show on Saturday, December 12.<br />
<br />
Based on the teaser, the game may simply be titled <em>Tron</em> -- although the logo and art style found in the footage are very similar to that of the upcoming movie sequel, <a href="http://www.apple.com/trailers/disney/tronlegacy/"><em>Tron: Legacy</em></a>. We'll find out exactly what to expect on the Game Grid in just a little over two weeks' time. For now, check out the teaser after the break.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Here you go, a recap of all of last night's Spike TV Video Game Award <a href="http://www.spike.com/event/vga/page/vote/category/29643">winners</a> that is viewable (in its entirety) after the break. And if you weren't already aware thanks to this blog's title, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gtaiv"><span style="font-style: italic;">Grand Theft Auto IV</span></a> beat out all other contenders for Game of the Year honors. It's a bit controversial to say the least, but then again, it is the Spike VGAs. Right?</div>

<div align="left">With all the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/rumor-gears-2-combustible-dlc-releases-soon/">excitement</a> surrounding tonight's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/reminder-spike-vgas-air-tonight-debut-of-gears-2-gtaiv-and-mo/">Spike TV Video Game Awards</a>, we know you'll be a good fanboy and watch the show either on TV or via the award show's <a href="http://www.spike.com/event/vga/page/live-camera">live stream</a>. And instead of watching all by your lonesome, we recommend jumping over to <a href="http://majornelson.com/Chat.aspx">Major Nelson's site</a> and joining the live chat event.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />The VGA live chat (accessible <a href="http://majornelson.com/Chat.aspx">here</a> or through your favorite IRC client) will promptly kick off at 9:00PM eastern over on MajorNelson.com. You'll be among your community peers which means you can discuss, speculate and express your fanboyism while watching the VGA news unfold. We'll be hanging out in the chat session and we've also learned that Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb will be stopping by sometime during the VGA airing. It's socialization, it's awards, and it's just fun.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/be-social-join-major-nelsons-vga-live-chat-event/">Be social, join Major Nelson's VGA live chat event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 19:30:00 EST. Oops? The rehearsal footage supposedly showed new Combustible Map Pack DLC for <em>Gears 2</em> that's set to release in early Monday morning. No other details were revealed, but we have a hunch we'll be seeing an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/possible-gears-2-imulsion-map-dlc-pics-surface/">Imulsion map</a> among the mix. Seeing that the live feed is no longer active (or crippled under the bandwith strain), we can't verify the DLC announcement or its release, so keep your eyes glued to Spike TV tonight at 9PM eastern.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/rumor-gears-2-combustible-dlc-releases-soon/">Rumor: Gears 2 Combustible DLC releases soon!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 18:31:00 EST. <div align="left">Reminder that tonight, at 9:00PM eastern on Spike TV, the Spike Video Game Awards will be airing and among the various awards that'll be handed out will be exclusive debuts of highly anticipated games. <em>GTAIV</em>'s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lost-and-damned"><em>Lost and Damned</em></a> episodic content will be shown, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fight-night-round-4"><em>Fight Night Round 4</em></a> will be debuted, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/brutal-legend"><em>Brutal Legend</em></a> will fight its way on stage and even more. <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/community/events/vga2008/default.htm">Xbox.com</a> also informs us that sometime during the VGAs we'll find out "what's next for Gears of War 2". Hmm, DLC much? The big reveals go down tonight at <strong>9:00PM eastern on Spike TV</strong>.<br /><br />[Thanks, Spartan5565]<br /></div>

<div align="left">Spike TV must be on a television ratings mission, because they not only have secured <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/brutal-legend-gameplay-debuts-at-2008-vgas-jack-black-to-host/">a few</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/fight-night-round-4-debuts-at-2008-vgas/">game debuts</a> for their VGA award show, but we're told that <em>Grand Theft Auto IV'</em>s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lost-and-damned"><em>Lost and Damned</em></a> episodic content will premier at the award show as well.<br /></div>

<br />The press release doesn't tell us much more than that, so we're not exactly sure what or how much <em>Lost and Damned</em> will be shown. Then again, it doesn't really matter, because our interest is piqued and we'll be tuning in on <strong>December 14th at 9:00PM eastern</strong>.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/gta-iv-the-lost-and-damned-to-premier-at-spike-vgas/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/gtaiv-lost-and-damned-to-debut-at-spike-vgas/">GTAIV 'Lost and Damned' to debut at Spike VGAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. We thought it was important to comb through <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/sphereNews/idUS130786+08-Jul-2008+PRN20080708?sp=true&amp;view=sphere">Spike TV's E3 coverage plans</a>, if only so we could plan our walking paths to put us in front of the cameras as much as humanly possible. But imagine our surprise when we actually found news hiding within our ticket to stardom. Check this listing:<br /><br />"Geoff Keighley is on the E3 show floor to give Spike viewers the inside scoop on the sights and sounds of the show. Also, tune in for more world exclusive surprises including something special from id Software and Raven Software. -- Tuesday, July 15 and Wednesday, July 16 (11:59 PM - Midnight, ET/PT)"<br /><br />Something special from id and Raven, huh? Could it be the 2-and-1/2-years-in-development <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wolfenstein/">Wolfenstein</a></em> follow up that's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/14/next-gen-wolfenstein-resurfaces-with-2008-release/">supposed to arrive</a> this year? Just when you were getting used to the awkward name, our good buddies at MTV Networks (hey Ed Lover!) have decided to close up Game Head HQ after 2-1/2 years and roll that show's talent into another video gaming super show: may we introduce GameTrailers TV, premiering next month on Spike TV. <br /><br />So, Keighley stays on board, but now his powers are augmented by those of GameTrailers' Daniel Kayser and Amanda MacKay. After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/11/23/mtv-buys-gametrailers/">purchasing Game Trailers two years ago</a>, MTV has been steadily integrating the property across their burgeoning video game empire. One need look no further than last night's airing of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/09/liveblogging-the-2007-video-game-awards/">Spike Video Game Awards</a>, which was littered with video game <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/iron-mans-new-trailer-looks-unexpectedly-awesome/">trailer</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/watch-the-vgas-little-big-planet-trailer/">premieres</a> (amongst other things carefully selected to trigger base responses in the 18-34 year old male demographic).<br /><br />So, we'll still have the news and interviews from Game Head, but coupled with the features and trailers from GameTrailers. Apparently, like the VGAs, trailers will premiere on the show before popping up on GameTrailers.com along with the full episodes. Full episodes will later make their way to the Xbox Live Marketplace in glorious HD if you're into that sorta thing.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/game-head-out-gametrailers-tv-in/">Game Head out, GameTrailers TV in</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 12:10:00 EST. A television channel aimed at men, young males and is chalk full of action, sex and violence. What a perfect channel to host a video game awards show.<br /><br />Last night's annual <a href="http://www.ifilm.com/show/23733">Spike Video Game Awards</a> wrapped up last night with the glitz and glam of a State Fair complete with corn dogs and funnel cakes. Samuel L. Jackson took hosting duties and in between the music and random celebrity appearances they (somehow) found the time to hand out a few video game awards. Among the evening's <a href="http://www.xboxic.com/news/4098">winners</a> were <em>BioShock</em> who took home three awards including Game of the Year and Best Xbox 360 Game, <em>Halo 3</em> which won for Best Multiplayer Game and <em>Rock Band</em> was honored with the Best Soundtrack ... beating out <em>Guitar Hero III</em>. Full list of winners, nominees and thus losers is posted after the break and feel free to completely disagree with Spike's VGAs. We raise an eyebrow to a few of 'em.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/recap-spikes-vga-winners-and-losers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Recap: Spike's VGA winners and losers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/recap-spikes-vga-winners-and-losers/">Recap: Spike's VGA winners and losers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:45:00 EST. We know you're on pins and needles, so we'll just come right out and tell you that Spike TV's latest Video Game Awards has lifted up <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/bioshock/">BioShock</a> </span>as the year's best game, with Andrew Ryan's underwater extravaganza <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/nominees-for-spike-tvs-video-game-awards-2007-revealed/">besting other notables</a> such as <span style="font-style: italic;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mass-effect/">Mass Effect</a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/the-orange-box">The Orange Box</a></span>, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/halo-3"><span style="font-style: italic;">Halo 3</span></a>. With Samuel L. Jackson <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/samuel-l-jackson-hosting-spike-tv-video-game-awards-again/">once again at the helm</a>, the awards show went down last night at Las Vegas' posh Mandalay Bay, and we imagine is now being carefully outfitted with extreme graphics and Mountain Dew ads for its television broadcast on Dec. 9 at 9PM.<br />
<br />
Besides its game of the year nod, <span style="font-style: italic;">BioShock </span>also walked away with awards for being the best Xbox 360 game and having the best original score, making it also responsible for the event's most return trips to the stage.<br />

The performance will be recorded along with the awards show, hosted again this year by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/samuel-l-jackson-hosting-spike-tv-video-game-awards-again/">Samuel L. Jackson</a>, December 7 in Las Vegas.<br /><br />No word on what songs will be performed, although the press release from VGL noted that "brand new never before seen material" is in the cards.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/30/video-games-live-to-make-tv-debut-on-spike-vgas/">Video Games Live to make TV debut on Spike VGAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 30 Nov 2007 17:20:00 EST. We don't really think that Spike TV's Video Game Awards are really meant to be taken <span style="font-style: italic;">too</span> seriously, though, so we suppose it's okay. When it comes to the VGAs, it just isn't surprising when the nominees for the "Game of the Year" and "Best Xbox 360 Game" are <span style="font-style: italic;">exactly the same</span>. <br /></div>
<br />It's also interesting that 3/4 of the "Game of the Year" group fall in the "Best Shooter" bunch. Let's not forget, though, that Spike is a channel for men, and men like to shoot stuff, cause they're all just badass and burly like that. Oh well, at least (as pointed out by our big daddy blog, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/nominees-for-spike-tvs-video-game-awards-2007-revealed/">Joystiq</a>) <span style="font-style: italic;">Madden</span> wasn't nominated for "Game of the Year" this time around.<br /><br />Color us shocked, but the Wii actually got some <span style="text-decoration: line-through;">love</span> lukewarm feelings from the VGAs this year. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Wii-Sports/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Wii Sports</span></a> was nominated for the <span style="font-style: italic;">highly esteemed</span> "Most Addictive Game Fueled by Dew" category, and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/super-mario-galaxy/"><span style="font-style: italic;">Super Mario Galaxy</span></a> was put into the "Best Action Game" group. And, uh ... that's about it, unless you count multiplatform titles and those in the "Best Wii Game" bunch.<br /><br />Check after the break to see the full list of nominees.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/10/wii-games-appear-in-nominee-list-for-spike-tvs-2007-video-game/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Wii games appear in nominee list for Spike TV's 2007 Video Game Awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/10/wii-games-appear-in-nominee-list-for-spike-tvs-2007-video-game/">Wii games appear in nominee list for Spike TV's 2007 Video Game Awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Nov 2007 15:30:00 EST.
