BioWare has just revealed this snazzy real-life replica version of Mass Effect 3's M-77 Paladin pistol, available for pre-order today. The weapon weighs 7 pounds, is hand-finished and hand-painted, and is one of a set of only 200 made by collectible firm Triforce.

Buying one for yourself will run you a total of $400: You'll need to put down $200 now to reserve your own fake space gun, and then another $200 when it's ready to go, which is expected to be later this year. That's not cheap, but then again nobody said fighting off the Reaper Invasion would be.

Limited edition Mass Effect 3 Paladin pistol replica available for pre-order originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 May 2013 22:30:00 EST. This update adds the Camera to the Emotes menu, so you can pull it out at any time and take some pictures of your bad virtual self. There are also improvements to the in-game item store, new animated items to buy and find, and some new features on the ignore and block system, as well as some general stability improvements.

You can download and install the update on PlayStation Home right now. There are also some new deals and sales going on for Home's various virtual areas (like the x7 nightclub, above), but we'll let you find those for yourself. After all, exploration is what really draws players into Home, right? There is something that draws players into Home, right? We're pretty sure there must be something.
PlayStation Home updated to version 1.7 originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Sep 2012 08:00:00 EST. Instead, Firefall's item stores are all about aesthetic and convenience items, things that players can use to customize their character's look, or have some fun in the game world.

In addition to the company's just-announced 'Founders' content bundles (detailed above, and currently on sale during PAX), Williams showed us some special cosmetic items available for purchase, like shaggy dreadlocks or a flashy helmet, as well as items from an in-game store called Luau Larry's. Larry will happily sell you some fun items, like a little voodoo doctor pet, or a tiki torch that plays in-game music and causes everyone around it to dance when placed in the world.

Becoming a founder also grants priority access to Firefall's current beta build - along with XP boosts, real-world items, in-game currency and more based on purchased tier. And the items in the founders' packages are set to be available on September 24, so we may hear about a bigger update coming then. Meanwhile, the current price on all three packages ($15, $37, and $75, down from $20, $50, and $100) lasts through PAX weekend.
Firefall beta opens up its item store, sells Founder's Packages (on sale now) originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 01 Sep 2012 20:43:00 EST. Private investment company OpCapita's Baker Acquisitions Unlimited has purchased Game, bringing it out of administration and saving 3,200 jobs across a remaining 333 stores and administrative positions, Eurogamer reports.

Baker will provide Game with "the capital it needs to trade on a normalised basis" and will re-hire a small number of people fired from the Game head office last week. There are no plans to close more stores in the future, Baker said.

Game may have been bought for £1, after paying off an £85 million debt to Game's lenders, Eurogamer said.
Investment company buys Game, halting closures, firings, bankruptcy originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 01 Apr 2012 20:00:00 EST. Riot Games CEO Brandon Beck gave the closing keynote at last week's IGDA Leadership Forum in Los Angeles, California, and during the talk (in which he made the point that "Riot's secret weapon all along" has been its employees), he gave a few interesting examples of how Riot's staff had really gone the extra distance to turn League of Legends into the successful online phenomenon it is today.

His first example was about the matchmaking system -- originally, Riot struggled to make sure that players were matched up against each other in an interesting and effective way, and the company ended up bringing in not a game developer, but a programmer with a PhD in computational biology whose "thinking was radically different and compelling," according to Beck.

A month after this hire, the company had a whole new matchmaking system, and in the end, it turned out to be "too fair" -- the games were too close. Since "what players remember are the outliers," according to Beck, the team developed "snowball items," which were "risky purchases that rewarded flawless execution." That bit of gameplay mixed up the matches, and came to be the system the game uses today.
Continue reading Riot Games' close calls with disaster

Riot Games' close calls with disaster originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 29 Oct 2011 18:30:00 EST. The locations of the first Microsoft stores have been revealed! Folks living near Mission Viejo in Orange County, Calif. and Scottsdale, Ariz. will be the first to check out Microsoft's brick-and-mortar retail spots when they appear in their local malls this fall. Those living in Orange County will likely do so after long days of underage drinking, Death Cab for Cutie concerts and slow-motion firearm assaults.

(Sorry, we don't have any jokes to make about the Arizona location. Nobody ever made a show about sexy teenagers there.)
Microsoft stores to open in The OC and The AZ originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 13:15:00 EST. Today's American PSP store update is pretty small. It pretty much consists of a Resistance Retribution trailer which, while good, isn't quite as exciting as the collection of games that went up on the European store this week. There are also some premium themes but, well, who would pay for something like that. Here's the list:

Resistance Retribution story trailer

19x premium PSP themes ($0.99 to $1.49)

Short and sweet update today. Ultimate Ghosts And Goblins arrives as promised but, if you'd rather not spend any money, there's a Buzz! Master Quiz demo for you to check out too. Plus, the latest episode of Pulse will show you what's what on the world of the PlayStation Network. Even though this particular episode doesn't even mention the PSP. Oh well. Here's the release list:

Ultimate Ghosts And Goblins ($19.99)

Buzz! Master Quiz demo (free)

Pulse January 15th episode (free)

You'll be able to grab it for $19.99 once it releases during this week's PSN update. We'll be sure to let you know what else is released alongside it, as usual.

If you're intrigued and haven't seen the game in action before check out the video above.

[Thanks LAZoftheTamarinds]
Ultimate Ghosts and Goblins available on the PSP Store this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Jan 2009 21:30:00 EST. We suspect Sony might be making up for something with today's update. Instead of just coming out and saying "we're sorry, we love you!" Sony has spoken to us through games. Three of them, to be precise, and all of them worth grabbing. There's also the add-on pack for Super Stardust Portable, along with a couple of videos and a theme. Here's the full release list:

Castlevania Chronicles PS1 game ($5.99)

Rayman 2: The Great Escape PS1 game ($5.99)

Tokobot full game ($9.99)

Super Stardust Portable Solo Pack Add-On ($4.99)

The official PlayStation blog is reporting that "parts of the PlayStation Network" will be down this morning for regularly scheduled maintenance. Here at Joystiq HQ, we can't seem to log in to the Store, and some of us are reporting newly found issues connecting to Home, but the friends list and messaging seem to be working just fine. We'll keep an eye on things and let you know when everything's back up and running.
PSA: 'Parts' of PSN down for maintenance this morning originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 16 Dec 2008 13:10:00 EST. Nothing too exciting for Americans, this week. Today's update consists of four videos, and that's it. No playable content, no themes or wallpapers, just some videos. Hilariously, three of the four trailers are for content only accessible via a PS3, so those of you who own only a PSP have very little to download this week. Here's the list:

Resistance 2 "Accolades" trailer

X'Amd Lost Memories "Exclusive Interviews" video

X'Amd Lost Memories "Release Announcement" video

Brain Challenge video

The PSN Store is actually down right now, thanks to Sony doing much behind the scenes fiddling in order to get the Home open beta up. When the store does come back up, you can expect the following offerings. All four items are full games and, as a result, they all cost cash money. These can also be bought via the PS3 PSN Store, once it's back up and running. Here's the full release list.

Jet Rider 2 PS1 game (£3.99/€4.99)

Brain Challenge full game (£7.99/€9.99)

NBA Live 09 full game (£29.99/€39.99)

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 full game (£31.99/€39.99)

European PSN update for December 11th originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 Dec 2008 13:15:00 EST. After over a month of weak PSN support (in terms of PSP content) SCEA has come through this week. Four full games are available to purchase, including two PSP versions of classic PS3 dual-stick shooters. Both are definitely worth a purchase. Mercury is a pretty fun physics-based puzzler, so if you've got the dosh, go for all three. Now all we need is Loco Roco 2 and we're set. Here's the full release list:

Archer Maclean's Mercury full game ($9.99)

Brain Challenge full game ($9.99)

Super Stardust Portable full game ($9.99)

Everyday Shooter full game ($9.99)

Ben 10 Alien Force "Making Of" trailer (free)

Some more PS1 games make their way onto the European PSN store today along with the latest episode of Shoot!. That makes five PS1 games in the last month. Hopefully SCEE can keep up this pace and continue to push decent, old school content onto our PSPs. Here's today's update in handy list form:

Red Alert Retribution PS1 game (£3.99/€4.99)

Jet Rider PS1 game (£3.99/€4.99)

Shoot! episode 3 "Hands"

Need For Speed Undercover wallpaper

What's this? Content on the US PSP Store? That almost never happens! Sure, it may only be one demo, but it's better than nothing, right? A Neverland Card Battles demo is now available on the store, ready and waiting for you to download. Don't be put off by Europe's almost decent update today, take advantage of this free content and show SCEA that people want downloadable PSP content. As for Neverland Card Battles, check out our review to see if it's worth the purchase.
Neverland Card Battles demo now available on the US PSN Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 18:25:00 EST. Need some more PSP content? It's Thursday, which means another store update. This week we've got two full games, a bunch of videos and a couple of themes. That's actually not a bad update. Take a look at Shoot, it seems like an interesting premise. Here's the full release:

FIFA 09 full game (£29.99/€39.99)

The Cube full game (£15.99/€19.99)

6x Shoot videos (free)

Short but sweet Store update today. Two PS1 games and a trailer. We've never heard of Spin Jam, but Theme Park is definitely a game that we remember very well. Pro tip: raise the salt content of your chips and increase your drink prices for a hefty influx of moneys. Here's the update listed in handy bullet point form:

Spin Jam PS1 game (£3.99/€4.99)

Theme Park PS1 game (£3.99/€4.99)

Launching the PSP-3000 Series video (free)

The official online Square Enix store has finally opened its doors to Europeans. Fancy grabbing some figurines of your favorite Final Fantasy characters? How about cell phone charms or weapon replicas? The store has all these things and more. At the moment it's only open to people residing in the United Kingdom, Germany and France though there are plans to expand it further.

Sure, it's all pretty expensive and comes with some arbitrary rules, such as "all orders must exceed £23/€29 to be processed," but that won't hold back the fanboys. So if you're a European who has been wondering how to get your hands on some Final Fantasy jewellery or a scarily detailed figure of Cloud, you know where to go.
European Square Enix store now open originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Nov 2008 08:30:00 EST. The new PlayStation Store for PC has opened, and it looks good. Once again, it's limited to Windows PCs. This time, it'll require the installation of the free Media Manager 3.0 software. After a brief installation and registration process, you'll be able to access the PlayStation Store directly from the interface. Anyone that has used the PS3 version of the PlayStation Store will be quite familiar with the layout of the Store.

Other features of the Media Manager include the ability to transfer music and photos to your system through a simple drag-and-drop interface. You'll even be able to rip music off of audio CDs directly onto your system. You'll also be able to back up for save and game data. Overall, we'll say the new Media Manager software is great -- especially with its current price tag.

Update: A new video walkthrough is available, after the cut.
Continue reading PlayStation Store for PC reopens with Media Manager 3

PlayStation Store for PC reopens with Media Manager 3 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 28 Oct 2008 10:30:00 EST. How's that direct-connect PSP Store working out for you? What's that? You have problems downloading stuff to your 8GB or 16GB memory stick? It says there's insufficient space? But that's preposterous, there's plenty of room. That's a bug, right there. Thankfully, it hasn't gone unnoticed at Sony HQ as they're issuing a new firmware revision to fix the problem. From the sounds of it that's pretty much all version 5.01 will do when it releases "soon." Everyone thank Uncle Sony for fixing the problem so speedily. We'll be sure to notify you once the firmware update is available.
Firmware 5.01 fixes your big memory stick woes originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 21 Oct 2008 20:20:00 EST. "I have to be careful what I say but publishers are definitely exploring more opportunities in terms of the types of games they can release on PSP, even in terms of more female-oriented games, puzzlers and less hardcore games," Zeno Colaço, vice president of publisher and developer relations for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, told Pocket Gamer. "The opportunity we're providing with digital distribution will ignite those thoughts."

The release of firmware 5.00 has enabled direct access to the PlayStation Store from the PSP system. The incorporation of the Store shows a growing emphasis on the importance of digital distribution on Sony's handheld. While original games on the Store have been limited to just a handful of games (beats, Syphon Filter: Combat Ops), publishers have slowly been moving their entire UMD catalog onto the Store. For example, D3 Publisher has made Dead Head Fred, Puzzle Quest, and PQ2 all available on the Store.

By providing developers and publishers a way of making games without relying on retail or UMD, the Store gives companies a chance to make all new kinds of games on the system. The opportunity to sell smaller games directly to PSP owners at higher profit, with less chance of piracy, should look attractive to many. Hopefully, it won't be long until we start seeing new games coming from this endeavor.

[Via GameDaily]
Downloadable games will 'ignite' PSP library, says Sony exec originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 19 Oct 2008 18:00:00 EST. While firmware 5.00 was confirmed for Japanese release this week, it appears that America will also follow suit. The big update in 5.00 is the ability to access the PSN and PLAYSTATION Store directly from the PSP. The PC-based Store will be temporarily down in the interim.

While this is great for our Mac-owning friends that weren't able to purchase games in the past, this deal will be far more enticing if it ensured that our weekly PSN updates were slightly more robust than wallpaper downloads. Let's hope that the US can have a downloadable lineup as great as Japan's.
PSP firmware 5.00 also coming soon to US, PC Store temporarily down originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 13 Oct 2008 11:20:00 EST. The PLAYSTATION Network is coming to the PSP next week -- at least in Japan. Firmware 5.00 will be available on October 15th and will add the built-in PlayStation Store under the new XMB category.

Japan will then get a regular release of downloadable titles through the rest of the holiday season. Games include:

Yuusha no Kuze ni Namaikida or2 (10/16)

Bleach Soul Carnival (10/23)

Secret Agent Clank (11/20)

Patapon 2 (11/27)

LocoRoco 2 (12/4)

Resistance Retribution

Notice how every SCE first-party title is downloadable, including Resistance Retribution? It looks like Sony is finally ready to give up on UMD ... or at least give consumers a viable alternative.
TGS 08: Firmware 5.00 and PlayStation Store launch next week originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 09 Oct 2008 12:12:00 EST. Sony has already confirmed the PSP Wi-Fi store is coming this Fall for Japan. It was previously rumored that the store would be coming with firmware 5.00.

In other PSP Brite news, the gang at Eurogamer spent the weekend with the upgraded handheld as well as firmware 4.20, featuring a Color Space option that, "If you set to [Wide], the system's display will appear more vivid."

[Via PSP Fanboy]
PSP Brite box art shows Wi-Fi Store originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 06 Oct 2008 13:30:00 EST. Finally! D3 Publisher, we applaud your decision to bring your PSP catalog to the PLAYSTATION Store. You're not bringing just one obscure game onto the Store -- you're making available a number of games, from big-budget releases to obscure cult classics. Best of all, you're making them available for cheap! Here are the releases:

September 18, 2008

Don't get too excited. There's nothing of any real interest in today's PC Store update. That is, unless you're into managing your PSP's content via a handy PC application. The Media Manager (version 2.5, no less) is now available for free on the European PC Store and lets you drag and drop content from your PC to your PSP, previewing as you go. Oh, there's also the next episode of Movement. Here's the info in handy list form:

Media Manager 2.5 (free)

Movement episode 5, part 2 -- "London" (free, includes 8 videos)

Finally! Sony has announced that the long-awaited PSP Wi-Fi Store, which allows players to purchase and download content directly on the PSP (without the need for a PC or PS3), will be available this Fall in Japan. Most likely, this will be global simultaneous launch. To commemorate the opening of the new Store, a free downloadable game, Mainichi Issyo Portable, will be available to all.

In addition, Sony has announced that a new feature will allow players to connect their PSP to their PS3 systems and enable a new Infrastructure mode for certain games. For example, Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G will be online-enabled through the PS3. In addition, players will be able to add text and voice chatting capabilities through this service. Additional details will be revealed at a later date.

It looks like Sony isn't falling asleep with the PSP. Let's hope concrete release dates for these services will be available soon.
PSP Wi-Fi Store coming in Fall, new PS3-Infrastructure mode announced originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Sep 2008 08:24:00 EST. While the official changelog of firmware 4.05 is underwhelming, it does feature a key hidden feature: support for movie and TV service. With E3 happening this week (stay tuned for live coverage!), the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated every day, with new content arriving from first and third parties. In addition to the requisite trailers and videos that will appear on the Store, PlayStation will be bringing it home with playable content. Watch out for Rock Band DLC, featuring The Who, the official release of the Super Stardust HD team pack, and a new PSN game, Elefunk.

Stay tuned for more info as it happens.
PLAYSTATION Store gets daily updates this week originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 12:10:00 EST.
My aversion to communicating face-to-face with other people means that I've rarely seen the inside of a bricks 'n mortar videogame store since ... well, since I worked in one last year! I also have a keenness to keep as much of my money as possible -- we all know that shopping online can guarantee excellent bargains.

On the other hand, I occasionally miss the days of rooting around in GAME's bargain bin and finding F-Zero X incorrectly priced at £0.99. I used to find some enjoyment in collecting loyalty points, of scooping neat pre-order bonuses that were exclusive to high street stores, and of having new stuff in my hands instantly.

Do any of you fine folk still prefer shopping at your local games emporium? If so, what are the perks for you? Are there perhaps specific products you will only buy at said stores? And a broader question: what do you think high street retailers could do to combat the growing threat from their online rivals?
DS Daily: Hitting the streets originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 10 Jul 2008 08:00:00 EST. For some reason, the prices of games on the US PLAYSTATION Store have fluctuated. Many games have actually increased in price, while The Con has been slashed in half. We're not exactly sure what's behind this seemingly-random adjustment in price, but we can't say we support it. Digital copies of games shouldn't be more expensive than buying it in retail. Let's hope this is a bad glitch.

The Con was $19.99 now $9.99

LocoRoco was $21.99 now $22.99

Kingdom of Paradise was $10.99 now $16.99

Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee was $10.99 now $15.99

Ape Escape: On the Loose was $9.99 now $15.99

Twisted Metal: Head-On was $14.99 now $15.99

SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo was $14.99 now $15.99

Gangs of London was $11.99 now $22.99

Wipeout Pure $10.99 now $15.99

Not a lot to see here today. SCEE has told us that, along with D2Comics' "interactive multimedia experience," The Cryptics, the store has also been updated with a trailer for Ape Quest as well as the game itself. To that, we ask "is it May 1st again?" We'll add it to the release list, to keep The Cryptics company. Plus, who knows -- maybe some of you forgot to pick up Ape Quest and need some gentle reminding that it exists. Here's the release list:
Sony has provided. No filler this week, just two full games up for grabs. Both are great and worth a punt, however Medievil is available at Play.com for half the price. If it's convenience you're after, however, feel free to pay extra and get it downloaded directly to your PSP. Via your PC, that is. Here's the release list:

We have to say, we expected there to be more than a week between Sony announcing full PSP games being made available on the PSN/PC Store and it actually happening. We are, however, pleasantly surprised. Not only that, but there's another PS1 game available today -- specially for all you RTS fans out there. Here's the list:

WipEout Pure full PSP game (£14.99/€19.99) (Review)

Command & Conquer: Red Alert PS1 game for PS3/PSP (£3.49/€4.99)

The PlayStation Store certainly becomes a much more interesting place once there's stuff to buy. Don't you agree?
European PC Store update for May 15th originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 May 2008 08:40:00 EST.
