Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will shell shock digital distribution networks this summer. DigitalSpy posted the trailer for the downloadable game coming to PC, PSN and XBLA in several months. The game will offer four-player online co-op where players can become any of the heroes in a half shell.

TMNT: Out of the Shadows appears to be the first in a three-game deal between Activision and Nickelodeon. The turtles used to be in the hands of Ubisoft, but that relationship seems to have splintered.

No details were offered about the games themselves, including available platforms, though they promise to "take gamers through interactive environments and action-packed adventures that truly capture the essence, tone and exciting elements of the Turtles."

Presumably, a lot of Foot Clan soldiers are in for a world of hurt. And Donatello will be the best. Obviously.

It was only a couple bucks, but you thought, "I have time. It'll always be there. I'll get to it eventually." But now you can't download Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Virtual Console and your world is destroyed.

Honestly, it was a weird goal to have, but we didn't want to say anything. In each and every region, it seems the turtles have retreated from the Virtual Console. Nintendo World Report reports Konami cited an "expired license," the same issue that claimed TMNT Turtles in Time Re-Shelled.

There's no word on whether the turtles will return to the surface any time soon, so we've contacted Konami for more.

Ubisoft is shelling out another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game this year with TMNT: Arcade Attack for DS. As the name implies, the game will feature the arcade-style, beat-em-up gameplay most recently seen in Turtles in Time, but this will be an all-new game. Players take on Shredder (who else?), along with his bebop and rock steady rogue's gallery of baddies, with a friend through local wireless -- or let a turtle-controlling AI buddy help out.

If the game's title sounds familiar, it's probably because we heard some rumblings about it a week ago. Those attending PAX can play the game in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Bus, located at the convention's entrance. Drop us a line in the comments if you happen to try it out.

In the latest dev diary for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up, the publishing team at Ubisoft discusses the importance of an online mode and what gamers can expect from its new "brawler." We say "brawler" because -- according to the video -- there is a major distinction between a standard fighting title and TMNT: Smash Up.

In Smash Up, up to four players can square off, "brawling" in massive free-for-all matches. If the Smash Bros-style of fighting is too hot for you to handle, players can also square off in two-on-two, or (standard fighting game) one-on-one matches. Developed by Game Arts -- a team made up of a slew of former Team Ninja veterans -- TMNT: Smash Up appears to be in good hands. Hands which you can then use to punch your opponent in the face with.

Heroes in a half-shell news now, as we've got a pair of juicy tidbits dealing with the pint-sized martial arts masters. First, we present this OFLC certification which says that recently released downloadable Turtles in Time: Re-Shelled is set to grace the DSi. Sadly, we have nothing else to go on but that, though we must say the prospect of yelling "turtle power!" at our DSi on the subway is an appealing one.

Our second item is a little more interesting. GoNintendo points us toward the latest issue of Nintendo Power, which supposedly reveals TMNT: Arcade Attack, a new title for the DS that utilizes the Turtles in Time formula (see: arcade style beat-em-up). GoNintendo says the game "supports 2-player action, allows you to throw enemies at the screen, and even lets you jump-kick enemies...but in a way that doesn't let you spam the move to victory," though we haven't seen the issue ourselves yet to confirm. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash Up doesn't just remind of another famous Nintendo franchise with the word Smash in the cover, now it's got the same style of cameos going on. The Tanooki took note of two different Rabbids that will make an appearance in the melee brawler.

The first Rabbid appears to be a standard insanitus bunnykin, while the other is a Sam Fisher Rabbid. The characters surely have their own fighting styles and special moves. Check out the video after the break.

For everyone else, some footage of the game has surfaced and, provided you can keep your breakfast down after the video's shaky-cam style, should give you an early taste of just what to expect.

Turtles in Time marks the second Konami oldie lined up for a makeover in as many months, following April's reveal of a new Vandal Hearts for PSN and XBLA. While some of us would have much preferred a remake of the NES original TMNT, given that game's crushing difficulty we doubt many gamers today would have survived that particular ride aboard the Technodrome's wayback machine.

The Alpha build of the game is being demoed on the Xbox 360 throughout the tour, but we're getting reports it could possibly makes its way to PSN and WiiWare as well, though there is no confirmation of that right now. One of our tipsters pointed us to the Twitter account for Hyperfludd (who stopped by and snagged some pics), but we've also found other sources confirming this game's existence.

Turtles in Time is arguably the best Turtles game ever, so remaking it is definitely a smart idea. Kind of like putting peanut butter on pizza.

Ubisoft seems to have found its angle for promoting TMNT: Smash Up, a "brawl 25 years in the making", even going so far as to use "BRAWL!" and "SMASH!" exclamations in this new trailer.

It's almost -- and this is a stretch, we know -- as if Ubisoft wanted people to be aware of the fact that it's making a character-based fighting game in the style of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, developed by the same company who worked on Super Smash Bros. Brawl, on the same system on which Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a hit.

We actually find it a little jarring to see Game Arts described as "the dudes that brought you Super Smash Bros. Brawl." A party fighting game from "the dudes who brought you Lunar: The Silver Star" wouldn't have the same impact, we suppose.

Though it's been out in the open for some time, Ubisoft today officially confirmed development was underway on TMNT: Smash Up. There are only two screens to date, featuring all four turtles doing their green-skinned, katana-wielding thang, but they look really promising (and possibly hint at a 2.5D game?).

The combination of '80s nostalgia (fun fact that we refuse to be embarrassed about: we had Turtles wallpaper right up until we moved out of home at 18) and the involvement of Super Smash Bros. Brawl developer Game Arts will ensure this game won't escape our attention easily. Check out both shots in Large-O-Vision here.

In "shell-ebration" (it says here in the press release) of the 25th anniversary of the world's most fearsome fighting team, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ubisoft has announced a new four-player fighting game that is "not tied to a TMNT movie, television show or comic book." Instead, as indicated by the incredibly subtle subtitle, TMNT: Smash Up will share ties with Nintendo's absurdly popular Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In fact, if the staff of Game Arts -- developer of both games -- dress formally at work, the ties shared will be quite literal.

Sensing that a few screenshots depicting the titular turtles (including the one who does machines and the one who is a party dude) may not satiate everybody, Ubisoft encourages interested parties to check out the January issue of Nintendo Power for more information. Meanwhile, look for TMNT: Smash Up to arrive during Fall 2009 and cause fighting purists to complain about "turtling" in a whole new way.

The latest issue of NGamer magazine has a preview of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brawler that was originally revealed last month.

It's officially titled TMNT: Smash Up (surely a blatant attempt to evoke memories of a certain other brawler), will feature arenas that change throughout scraps (so you'll change locations as you fight, as happened in Power Stone 2), and will see players defeating their opponents by either knocking them off the stage (à la -- oh! -- Super Smash Bros.) or emptying their health meter entirely, which can be refilled with pizza, natch.

There will be no motion-controlled attacks (though waggle isn't ruled out for other aspects, and there will be context-sensitive moves), and what is described as a "dark, gritty" graphical style. Turtles co-creator Peter Laird is penning the single-player story, but what we really want to know is the character roster; currently, only the Turtles and Splinter are confirmed. We're calling shotgun on Krang.

As Scientology teaches us, benevolent aliens are some day going to land on planet Earth and deliver unto us the Usagi Yujimbo Wii game that we all deserve. Until that glorious day, it looks like we'll be able to make due with a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2.5 dimensional fighter in development at Ubisoft.

Sure, it's a licensed game (though not based on any specific movie or show) but it's also got an impressive pedigree, with Nintendo Power reporting a dev team that includes Smash Bros. Brawl and Team Ninja vets. Oh, and it reportedly supports four players and online action. We're not quite at "Cowabunga!" level excited yet, but super mutation could deifinitely put us over the edge.

We'll keep an eye out for more details.

Well. Here's some profoundly bizarre, slightly awesome news out of the latest issue of Nintendo Power: Ubisoft is planning a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting game. Not to go along with a movie, cartoon, or comic -- just because. This project is going to involve staff from Super Smash Bros. Brawl (maybe Game Arts people?) as well as Team Ninja expats. That's all we can confirm, given our non-possession of the magazine.

But some guy on the IGN boards (which require a login, so check the GoNintendo reproduction here) went on to (probably) summarize the article, revealing the game to be a 2.5d, four-player fighting game with online play. Hey, we like those -- especially when they feature beloved characters from our youth! Although we don't like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting games (well, the SNES one was okay, and the NES one was technically impressive). According to the IGN poster, Ubisoft is shooting for a September release. Bossa nova!

Promotional Consideration is a weekly feature about the Nintendo DS advertisements you usually flip past, change the channel on, or just tune out.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters for the Genesis was not a game I actually purchased, as our family was one of little means, and I knew better than to let money go to waste. It was loaned to me by a "friend" in exchange for The Ren & Stimpy Show: Stimpy's Invention, a deal which my pal falsely assured me I was getting the better end of.

The trade wasn't meant to be permanent -- that was explicitly stated in the contract -- but my business associate suddenly moved away, Spanish For Everyone-style. Except in my case, I didn't have a sultry Spanish aunt offering to teach me "many things." Also, I learned nothing from the experience.
