Developer Saber Interactive has been keeping to itself since its time-bending shooter, TimeShift, first bored critics in 2007. Employees have been spending their hours competing in weekly dance-offs doing the Time Warp, a heated competition that'll likely be put on hold now that the company has a new game to work on. Make that games -- plural -- as middleware firm Havok announced that its Havok Destruction tech is now in the hands of the company for use in "several" upcoming games.

While no games have been announced, Saber Interactive teases that Havok Destruction will help bring "a new scale and complexity to the fully destructible city" in its next title, including the ability to punch holes through walls. In addition, the developer notes that the software allowed it to realize "large-scale destruction sequences" and reduce costs, with the outfit's budget for interactive assets dropping by 40 percent or more as a result of the Havok license. Exploding barrels, is there anything you can't do?
TimeShift dev taps Havok for 'several' upcoming games originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 29 Apr 2009 08:35:00 EST. Remember that free TimeShift DLC that dropped earlier this week? We hope you snapped it up quick, because it looks like it wasn't supposed to be free. It seems some Xbox Live Marketplace ninjas have infiltrated Microsoft HQ and changed the price of "Urban Redual" to 800 MS Points. The other piece of DLC "Futures-Past," however, remains free. We're not quite sure what happened, but it's clear that there was a mix-up somewhere. Whether or not time powers were involved has yet to be confirmed. Whether or not "takesies-backsies" was declared is also unconfirmed at this time.
Free TimeShift DLC shifts to not free originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 May 2008 14:15:00 EST. First off, kudos to the GDC organizers for putting such different-minded people together for "The Future of Story" panel, which ended up being an insightful and vitriolic debate. The panel, hosted by indie writer Deborah Todd, included Saber 3D's Matthew Karch and Michael Hall (Time Shift), Silicon Knights' Denis Dyack (Too Human), Eidos Montreal's Mary DeMarie (previously: Myst III, IV and Dungeon Siege), Matt Costello (7th Guest) and Director of id Software Tim Willits.

A focus of the panel was the the dichotomy of story and gameplay, with both Dyack and Karch taking opposing viewponts and everyone else scattered somewhat in the middle. Early on, Karch asserted his view that some genres don't need to value story as much, citing Call of Duty 4 as a game where no one cared about the story. Later, he summed his viewpoint up best saying, "My whole argument is, it doesn't need to be a story written by Steinbeck, it needs to be someone who just keeps the game moving on."

Said Dyack, "In five to ten years, there will not be a shoter genre. It's gonna be more literative -- horror, science fiction, etc." When Karch asked if Bruckheimer would go away (referencing the "high-octane" film producer), Dyack retorted that "He's McDonald's, thats what he is. and people love McD's." The back and forth continued, culminating in the following exchange:

Dyack: "We should still aspire to this. you could have bubble gum like, Transformers [the film] for example, but in the end its what entertains."

Karch: "I'll take bubble gum."
Continue reading GDC08: Surviving the war of words in 'The Future of Story' session

GDC08: Surviving the war of words in 'The Future of Story' session originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Feb 2008 17:00:00 EST. With the long-overdue in-game XMB still a no-show as of last month's 2.00 PS3 firmware update, we were about to resign ourselves to a future that entailed exiting out of games to read messages and getting up to change the channels. Yeah, barbaric. But perhaps we're being a little too fatalistic. Included in yesterday's PSN Thursday update were some special treats: notably a custom soundtrack option in High Velocity Bowling that looks very XMB-ish, along with an in-game friends list for the Timeshift demo, available from the multiplayer screen, which also has that XMB look 'n feel.

So if we've got some of the most requested features being added straight to games, emulating the look and feel of the XMB interface, what do we need an in-game XMB for then? Maybe nothing, but we worry that if developers become responsible for implementing this functionality instead of it being a system constant, that we'll see an inconsistent experience across whichever games decide to add it. While we're not quite bowled over, it's a step in the right direction.

[Thanks, Justin]
XMB who? We heard complaints from reviewers that TimeShift's single-player campaign wasn't as revolutionary as it probably could have been considering its time-bending premise. But you have to hand it to the multiplayer component of the game: It really doesn't feel like anything else out there. Now, you can get a taste for yourself with a new multiplayer demo on Xbox Live.

Basically, instead of giving everyone the ability to stop and slow time (which would have been a little too insane, we'd bet) the chrono-powers have been contained to grenades that you lob at enemies that force them to slow, stop, etc. As hectic as it sounds digitally printed here, is twice as crazy on the battlefield. Just be forewarned: You're probably going to get owned by your stoner friend Rusty: He's been playing Halo in slow-motion for years.
TimeShift gets multiplayer demo on Xbox Live originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 14 Nov 2007 09:25:00 EST. The new demo includes the same single player section from the previous demo, but the real meat is the addition of multiplayer. Several game modes are available, though we were unable to find a game when we tried earlier today. If you've got the hardware, system link is available, too. If you haven't tried TimeShift, you may want to give it a go, as the time control elements are also a part of its multiplayer. The flood of games isn't stopping any time soon, so it's best to pick your purchases wisely this holiday season. Sadly, unlike the main character in TimeShift, you won't be able to purchase, play, reverse time, and get something else in an endless loop for the last two months of '07. TimeShift's demo was not impressive, forcing us to call the game TimeScript because we had severe issues not being able to save characters in scripted events that could easily be saved. If the main hook in the game is about messing with time (a convention we're well versed in at this point), it better work right and bring something new to the table.
While the standard rifle is handicapped due to its much-too-large reticle, most players will gravitate towards two particular guns. ... While exploring your time-altering gifts will keep your attention for several levels, halfway through the game you'll start to feel déjà vu as you move through the clichéd warehouses and engineering plants. To make matters worse, the simplistic environmental puzzles feel recycled from past titles. TimeShift also isn't above the occasional laggy sequence or game freeze."

That doesn't mean the game isn't good. It definitely has its moments, especially once the time bending powers become unlocked. There's something definitely satisfying about freezing time, chucking a grenade into a pack of soldiers and watching as the hilarity ensues. But as I was playing the game, I just couldn't shake the feeling that I had done it all before."

Oh yeah, and fire? Forget about it. If you don't pause time while traveling down a conveyer belt with fire spewing from both sides, you're toast. I don't necessarily hate the fact that you have to use time control to get by these obstacles, but I do dislike the fact that a good number of these obstacles are old first-person shooter standbys that have been given a thin coat of paint by the time-shifting mechanics. Here are twenty new screenshots from the PS3 build of TimeShift. The demo, which is currently available on Xbox 360 and PC, showcases the various time shifting abilities you have: you can rewind time, slow time and pause time -- each has their own strategic benefits. This looks like a solid shooter, but will it be able to stand out in a very crowded holiday, which includes Call of Duty 4 and Haze?

[Correction: TimeShift is not currently on the PS Store.]

Gallery: Timeshift

Twenty new TimeShift screenshots originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Oct 2007 16:00:00 EST. That being said, this commercial for TimeShift is a little disturbing. The commercial depicts a convenience store robbery that is eventually thwarted by the time suit wearing hero of TimeShift. Maybe it's just because it seems entirely out of context compared to what we've seen of the game, or because it's live action, but the commercial is strangely unsettling. Of course, the idea is to show off the possibilities of time powers, but using them to kill some two-bit thugs seems a little excessive. Still, that's beside the point we suppose, as we're sure the premise will intrigue many viewers, even if the commercial uses hardly any actual game footage at all (bonus points if you can spot it).

TimeShift, in all its 4th-dimension-bending, hyper-violent glory, hits the Xbox 360 next month.

[Via Joystiq]
Video: TimeShift commercial is super violent originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 17:30:00 EST. And all the adults go, "Where's the game footage? That's not the game." Granted, we haven't seen past the demo, so maybe there's a convenience store robbery you thwart in the past in FMV and it'll all make sense. As a stand-alone piece this commerical is great -- but the original trailer was at least CGI and not some guy walking around in a leftover Power Rangers costume.

TimeShift is still scheduled for an Oct. 30 release on Xbox 360 and PC, PS3 owners are looking at a "December" release. We're still not over calling the game TimeScript though, based off the demo not allowing us to save friendly soldiers we clearly have the "time" to save. Who knows, maybe the game will impress while the demo didn't, that's still our hope for Heavenly Sword.
Ultra-violent TimeShift commercial originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 05 Sep 2007 09:55:00 EST. So unpredictable. A TimeShift demo mysteriously sneaked its way onto XBLM last night, unbeknownst to unsuspecting gamers. TimeShift, if you don't know, is an FPS that makes novel use of time control powers. Developed by Saber Interactive and published by Sierra, we were fairly impressed with what we played at E3 last month. Give it a go and see what its shifty gameplay does for you. We checked with Ziggy, and she says there's an 85% probability that we didn't know about this. We're sending in Al to make sure this isn't a mistake, but a TimeShift demo has phased into Xbox marketplace. The game is available to demo well in advance of its Oct. 30 launch.

The demo for TimeShift seems like your standard FPS fare. The location is a City 17 Half-Life 2 dystopia with propaganda blaring through the city, you have Max Payne meets F.E.A.R. powers -- except you can reverse time a little as well. One utterly obnoxious oversight is that you can't actually alter scripted history in the game. There's a scene very early on where a guy screams, "I don't want to die!" A soldier then caps the guy in the back of the head. If you reverse time, you can't kill the guy about to shoot him -- no matter how many bullets you put in his head. If you stop time, you can't take the gun out of the shooter's hands. If you slow time, you can't put your body in front of the bullet. The poor man will always die. Maybe they should have called the game TimeScript.

[Thanks Gage]
TimeShift alters past, demo phases into Xbox marketplace originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 30 Aug 2007 18:30:00 EST. Specifically, the Xbox 360 and PC versions will be available on October 30th. The PS3 version will be debuting this December. A special pre-order campaign for the game will begin this week. Should you desire to slap down the cash for a pre-order, you will be treated to an exclusive playable character in the TimeShift's multiplayer mode. We recently had a chance to try out TimeShift at E3 and came away impressed. After a very, very, very long wait, TimeShift is finally ready to phase into our time line Oct. 30 on PC and Xbox 360 -- PlayStation 3 owners will sadly have to wait until "December." Sierra says it's kicking off the pre-orders this week and customers will receive a code for an "exclusive playable character" for the multiplayer game at select retailers.

TimeShift reappeared again earlier this year following its umpteenth delay last fall. This time around it finally felt like the game might come out and we did have a good experience with the title at E3 this year. We're just hoping TimeShift uses its abilities to bring a fresh experience to the whole time-bending shooter formula we've gotten used to with games like F.E.A.R. and Max Payne. We've waited long enough.

[Via Press Release]

Gallery: TimeShift

TimeShift changes history Oct. 30 on PC, Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 08 Aug 2007 14:45:00 EST. E3 hasn't even officially started yet, and the trailers are already ankle-deep from Monday's appearances alone. Just wait until it's raining assets later in the week and you can't keep up with anything. You'll feel a bit like Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange. You won't want to watch anymore, but you won't be able to help it.

Viddy everything that popped online Monday after the break, with the added bonus of the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare E3 trailer. Even though it came out a couple of days ago and is a total mouthful, it's well worth a second look.
Continue reading E3 '07 trailer roundup: Day Minus One

E3 '07 trailer roundup: Day Minus One originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jul 2007 10:00:00 EST. IGN has scrounged up some multiplayer details on TimeShift, which we hope to get some hands-on time with soon because from the images it looks like Gears of War 2 -- which isn't a bad thing. Yes, yes, we know it's the same engine, but the visual similarities are strong (might be all the earth tones). The game will allow players to customize all aspects of the multiplayer experience: start weapons, gravity, armor respawn time, run speed and weapon damage. The maps and modes are still being locked down but all the standards are there like deathmatch and capture the flag.

The only thing we really want to know about TimeShift multiplayer is how to control time. From the interview it doesn't sound like they've worked that out yet. Lead Producer Kyle Peschel says, "The first idea was to have Time Shifting work just like in single player. Sounded great on paper, we even figured out how Slow would be trumped by Stop and Stop by Reverse ... [the] problem was what reverse looked like ... lag. Even though the game was doing EXACTLY what it was supposed to do, the other people going in reverse thought the game was lagging out since they were telling it to do something and it wasn't responding." That's it, no further explanation, so it looks like they're still working on that issue. They also say they've been really focusing on the multiplayer. Yeah, don't go neglecting the single player game, just ask Shadowrun how that one ends.
New TimeShift details about shifting time online originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 19:25:00 EST. The focus of multiplayer, according to Peschel, is customization. Players will be able to create and name their own special game modes, which they can save for later use. Several aspects of the game, from damage ratios to gravity to run speed, will all be adjustable by players. As Peschel put it, players can design a gametype just to "instantly offset their buddy who comes over who is nothing but a spawn camping whore." Sounds good to us. On time manipulation in multiplayer, Peschel doesn't go into details, but notes that time powers won't work exactly as they do in single player, as it's hardly fair for one player to freeze and entire field of players and wreak havoc. Hopefully we'll hear some more specifics on multiplayer time control soon.
New shifty TimeShift multiplayer deets originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 17:15:00 EST. That's why TimeShift is making that now "meh" function the focus of its gameplay, promising to breathe new life into time altering mechanics. We gave you a pretty comprehensive look at the game a while back, but we skipped over the multiplayer details. Now we have them, so we'll give them to you.

Customization: you can create and name your own play modes, so if you want a no-gravity knife match, you can call it "Space Shiv" or something. The customization also presents ways to level the playing field. Sorry, "spawn camping whores," but you won't get kills that way in this game.

Implementing time mechanics is still shaky, but it'll play like some kind of rock-paper-scissors. Using "slow" should trump "reverse" while reverse trumps "stop" ... full circle, "stop" trumps "slow." So it's Reverse -> Stop -> Slow -> Reverse. At this point in time, at least.

It's not much detail yet, but from the excitement the dev team over at Saber Interactive, they believe in it strongly. It might be the most customizable multiplayer shooter ever. We'll see!
TimeShift multiplayer: name your own mode originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 27 Jun 2007 16:30:00 EST. Original, fatty black n' green Xbox, we mean. It got stuck in development hell for reasons only the developers truly knew, but we now realize what was wrong. Saber Interactive was waiting. Waiting for the next-gen consoles, because what they wanted to do wasn't possible on old hardware. Forget about the full visual makeover it received, we're going to tell you some more detailed information about the game itself.

The old story, recorded dialogue with Dennis Quaid and Michael Ironside included, has been scrapped. Gone is the tragic war veteran who lost his daughter and replacing him is you, the player. Taking on a classic RPG style of unnamed protagonist, you're just a player in the war game, so to speak. If you were a silent protagonist, that'd be awesome, but unlikely. Regardless, you travel to an alternate timeline and take on an army of warriors protecting the man who changed the flow of time to make himself leader of all things gritty, dark, and somber.

A new time-control scheme lies in your suit, dubbed S.S.A.M. and given a female persona. One button controls the ability to stop, slow, or rewind time, depending on which would be most beneficial in a given situation. Using these in the levels would be nice, but the first four completed levels were completely scrapped, replaced by gigantic new ones, each with a specific purpose to advance the story. There's plenty more to discuss, like the enhanced AI, puzzle-solving opportunities and other gameplay gimmicks, but we'll stop here and let you check the rest out on your own. Shooters have to try harder to differentiate themselves from one another and this game is trying harder than most.
Everything you want to know about TimeShift originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 17 Jun 2007 12:00:00 EST. For those of you with unsuitable streaming capabilities, you can finally watch the trailer in all its high definition glory. In case you need a recap, TimeShift allows players to manipulate time in myriad ways. For example, you can stop time in order to evade oncoming bullets (and fire a few return bullets as well). Granted, time manipulation isn't exactly a new concept, but TimeShift looks to at least make it interesting. Go download the trailer and enjoy. Of course, if you're not picky about resolution, you could always just watch the streaming trailer right now.

TimeShift is set to arrive this fall.
TimeShift trailer bends time on XBLM originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 07 Jun 2007 12:15:00 EST. There's been some question about whether or not TimeShift was going to be coming to the PS3, but after Sony's Gamer's Day it's clear that it is definitely coming. The sci-fi first person shooter is based heavily on the utilization of time manipulation as a gameplay element. Check out these two brand new screenshots to see some great shots of the previously Xbox 360 exclusive title.

Gallery: Timeshift

SGD '07: TimeShift confirmed on the PS3 + gallery! originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 17 May 2007 03:01:00 EST. The main character used time powers to thwart a squad of baddies and a tank. The trailer is pre-rendered, but the concepts within it are pretty tantalizing. Watching the character stop time, disarm a soldier and wipe out all the rest of them is pretty nifty. And taking out the tank ... well, we don't want to spoil it, but it's pretty cool. Now, if the actual game can live up to the excitement generated by this trailer, we may just be on to something special.
TimeShift video bends reality in a good way originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 08 May 2007 17:00:00 EST. This follows the announced delay last year when Vivendi said they were giving the game "time and resources needed to fulfill its potential." At last year's E3 the game played fine, but the graphics were lacking. E3 criticism is what probably sent the title into seclusion. We're sure somewhere TimeShift and Too Human are having a couple beers and drunkenly talking about how unfair E3 2006 was to them. Although this footage of TimeShift clearly isn't in-game, it's still cool. Now remember developers, don't ever let something go into a CG movie that won't be in the game -- big no no. A release date for TimeShift is still lost in the miasma of corporate decision making.

[Thanks GamingTalkHQ.com]
TimeShift isn't complete vaporware, now with trailer originally appeared on Joystiq on Sat, 05 May 2007 00:30:00 EST. The good news: they look pretty nice. Even better, they look markedly improved over the screenshots that were released last July. For those that don't know, TimeShift began as an Xbox 1 project which then migrated to the Xbox 360. It was originally being owned by Atari and subsequently picked up by Sierra. The game is being developed by Saber Interactive and centers around time bending powers such as slowing and stopping time. The game also features online multiplayer for up to 16 players across 14 different maps. The official website has a countdown to a new trailer, which is just over ten days away at the time of this writing. TimeShift is due this fall. Their message was quick and to the point:

Vivendi Games acquired TimeShift with the view that it would become a stand out FPS franchise. Our commitment to that vision remains, and so the decision has been taken to move the title into 2007 to give it the time and resources needed to fulfill its potential.

As many times as this thing has been delayed, it may not be long until TimeShift is added to the long storied list of vaporware. Duke Nukem meet TimeShift. TimeShift meet Duke Nukem.
TimeShift hit with delay stick yet again originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 31 Aug 2006 15:25:00 EST. Added to that potential thrill will be the man behind such timeless celluloid classics as The Rookie and In Good Company, Dennis Quaid.

Mr. Quaid will be lending his voice talents to the lead character Colonel Michael Swift. Other celeb voices you'll hear include: Nick Chinlund (Con Air and The Chronicles of Riddick films) who will voice General Mitchell and Michael Ironside (The Perfect Storm and Starship Troopers) who will play the scientist Doctor Krone.

Our latest hands-on with Timeshift back in June showed the game to have improved somewhat from the E3 demo, so here's hoping a good game actually comes out of this time-bending concept.
Dennis Quaid taking lead in Timeshift originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 27 Jul 2006 15:55:00 EST. The screens show off some of the nifty backdrops and some decent weapon models -- not spectacular, though this is expected from what was originally an Xbox title.
