Miyamoto's DS patent offers upgraded tourist hunting techniques

The DS Lite could see society's next great advancement in GPS technology, at least in tourist-heavy areas such as museums and haunted-home expeditions, a patent from Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto suggests.

The patent describes a system where an overhead grid of infrared "positional information transmitters" reads a user's DS to light up floor patterns and potential walkways. The user can then pick which route he'd like to take, reading tourist facts along the way.

Nintendo has already infiltrated the museum scene with the 3DS giving guided tours in the Louvre, and it's doing a pretty great job, from what we hear. There's no guarantee that a patent will translate to an actual product, but the thousands of infrared beams hovering over the Mona Lisa fulfills a few of our own spy fantasies, so we'll hope this one works out in some way.

Live from my house: The Cabela's Adventure Starts Here tour

Activision always asks me, "Justin, what do we have to do to get you to cover games in our popular Cabela's hunting series?" I never imagined, when I demanded the company drive a trailer with a fake bighorn sheep to the hospital parking lot directly behind my house, that I'd be taken so literally.

So, against all odds, here's a video tour of the Adventure Starts Here trailer, coming to a parking lot somewhere near you. Oh, and you'll also get a look at the new Kinect controller for Cabela's Hunting Party and some gameplay footage from Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai.

Sony takes Qriocity on tour, hosting concerts with Big Boi, DeVotchKa

Sony's enlisting some heavy hitters to help promote its PSN-integrated music platform, Qriocity -- the company recently announced a list of events across Europe and North America, including two stops that will feature live performances by DeVotchKa and Big Boi. You'll recognize that first name as the artist behind the accompaniment to Gears of War 2's memorable "Last Day" ad. You'll recognize that second name because it's Big Boi. C'mon, everyone on Earth knows who Big Boi is.

Ah, the July 4th weekend. The perfect time for grilling hot dogs, setting off fireworks, jumping in the pool, and ... hockey? That's what 2K Games wants you to think about -- it's sending an NHL 2K11 recreational vehicle on the road this summer, giving you a chance to play the new game in a town near you. The RV started at E3 a few weeks ago in LA, and after a quick stop in Santa Monica next week, it's off to the wild roads of the United States and Canada (the full schedule is after the break).

Ryan Kesler has a tour of the vehicle over on 2K's website, and it looks like a fine conveyance. For now, anyway. Sorry, Philly and New York -- after a couple of months on the road, that shower might not be quite so pristine.

Penny Arcade crew kicking off new book tour February 23

Between the thrice-weekly comic, the quad-monthly PATV episodes and the bi-yearly conventions, we find ourselves pretty saturated in Penny Arcade's artistic outings. Still, there are a few places in our lives where we could use some more of Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins' irreverent brand of jest -- like, for instance, our coffee table.

That gap will soon be filled by the duo's new book, The Splendid Magic of Penny Arcade: The 11½ Anniversary Edition -- a tome which covers the history of the comic, the Penny Arcade Expo and the annual Child's Play charity. The book is due out February 23 -- at which point its creators will kick off a national book tour. Check past the jump to see if they're making a stop in your town!

Big Orc on Campus: We tour through Blizzard

Blizzard's main company headquarters are, much like any other, located somewhere inside a massive corporate building complex, this one deep inside Irvine, California. Once you get past the guard gate and make your way inside, it's not quite like most business parks. For one, Blizzard has its own ginormous Orc Wolfrider statue guarding the front doors.

There's enough lush green vegetation around to conceal a Fallout-style vault, or a mechanized army of robotic dragons ... which might be where your monthly World of Warcraft fees are going. At least part of that money went to pay for the company's own sand volleyball court, where brave employees reenact that scene from Top Gun.

What other secrets does the place hold? Read on to find out, and browse through the 99 images in the gallery below, which sadly doesn't include the photos we were asked not to show or talk about. Hopefully they'll let us do that soon. For now, let the speculation begin ...

Rock Band concert tour, chance to humiliate yourself on-stage announced

Part of the appeal of games like Rock Band is that you can play like you're in a band without actually having to go on-stage and risk mass humiliation. Of course, there are those who can't see the line separating failing a song in front of three friends and failing a song in front of 10,000 strangers. For them, MTV has created the Rock Band Live Tour.

Kicking off on October 5 in San Diego, CA, the tour is headlined by Panic at the Disco and Dashboard Confessional, and, as the press release happily exclaims, "possibly you!" Pre-concert Rock Band 2 competitions will be held by local radio stations, national contests, and on-site at each venue, the winners of which will "perform" on-stage in-between sets by opening acts Plain White T's and The Cab. (In addition, MTV has announced that tracks from all of the acts on the tour "minus you!" will be made available in a post-launch DLC pack for Rock Band 2.)

Dashboard Confessional frontman Chris Carraba is quoted in the release, saying, "I'm practicing my Rock Band drumming. With any luck I'll win a spot on stage to show what I can really do." Har-har! Tickets for the tour go on sale at 10:00am local time on Friday, August 8. Check out the full schedule of stops after the break.

The site is designed to complement to upcoming Feel Great Britain tour, running through July and August.

Nintendo aren't just sitting back and letting Wii Fit sell itself (which it does quite nicely, thanks). It's good to see they understand that exercising is an ongoing activity, and they are willing to actively support the product during the months ahead. Nintendo takes Wii Fit out for a run in the UK

Nintendo is bringing Wii Fit to the people, to convince the few UK residents who have yet to preorder the thing that ~~they're disgusting sacks~~ they could benefit from a fun exercise program. The Wii Fit tour is traveling to populous locations like universities and shopping centers from this week through June to get random strangers up and leaning. "If you loved the energetic nature of Wii Sports you'll love Wii Fit, which makes it easy for everyone to experience a fun and interactive way to exercise which launches across the UK on 25th April 2008," the press release states (weirdly). They're right -- playing it at one of these events is going to be a lot easier than trying to find the thing in a store.

The tour starts this week at Mall Galleries in Bristol, where Wii Fit will be on display from the 18th to the 20th. The full list of dates and locations is after the break.

Gamerscore Blog's Road Tour stops in Chicago

Our good friends over at the Gamerscore Blog have officially kicked off their North American Road Tour '07 with a stop in Chicago on Sunday. And while in Chicago they got a chance to check out the silver bean, go to a Cubs game, and most importantly spent some time with the Xbox community playing some games. And if you're curious, they posted all of the Chicago fun (in picture form) on their Flickr account where we spotted a pic of XBLA game Track & Field.

We didn't get a chance to attend the event, but we were wondering if any of our fellow fanboys made it to Chicago for the good times. If so, did you have a crazy amount of fun hanging out with the Gamerscore Blog crew? We hear they're cool kittens.

Joystiq tour: Xbox 360 Spring '07 Dashboard update

As promised, we updated the old Xbox 360 this morning and in (literally) less than 30 seconds, we were tooling around the Spring '07 Dashboard update, checking out the Marketplace blade and fiddling with the new Windows Live Messenger integration. Everything seemed to work according to plan, except a ghost from our past came back to haunt us: Xbox 360 annoyance number 10.

You see, you can't change the Windows Live ID linked to your gamertag. Like, at all. You just can't do it. You can't do it on their website. You can't call up 1-800-4MY-XBOX and do it. Why? Microsoft says, "Your Windows Live ID credentials are permanently linked to a specific Xbox Live enabled profile. You cannot break this link." This was a minor annoyance before; however, now it's been elevated to a full-blown frustration. Good thing we don't use Windows Messenger at Joystiq HQ.

While we spent time testing out the Windows Live integration, our buds at Engadget tested out the update's enhanced video capabilities. They were pleased to report no trouble playing back several flavors of H.264 and MPEG-4 content, declaring the Xbox 360 the winner in the digital video living room arena (take that AppleTV!). Today's sneakiest game video: Frontlines - Fuel of War hidden tour

Sneaky hidden videos will always score high on our list, particularly if they don't involve Britney, Paris, and Lindsay. It's time we reclaimed their 15 minutes because they've run into serious overtime.

So, the story behind this video is as follows: 'Games For Windows' Magazine recently filmed a totally unathorized, hidden video tour of Kaos Studios for a piece about Frontlines: Fuel of War. They weren't thrilled about having their HQ filmed Geraldo-style, but THQ (the publisher) didn't want to retaliate against the magazine, for fear that they would give them a bad review in return.

So, once all the smoke has cleared, what does that leave us with? Frankly, not too much. Either it's a well planned "fake" secret video, or else it's a new wave of marketing going into effect that really embraces the old adage "there's no such thing as bad publicity." Of course, nothing really groundbreaking or damaging was revealed in this video ... or was it? Does this mean we can start running around developer HQs with a camera, knowing that they won't want us to pan their upcoming games?

Hmmmmmm ...

Wii hits the mall

Now this is the sort of marketing Nintendo needs to be spending money on -- it's a Wii mall tour!

Don't take this the wrong way. After all, we love the ads. We're full of ad love. But the best footage we've seen of how the Wii works isn't in the polished ads. It's not any of the Red Steel guys or the kids throwing down with Bleach. No, the best of what we've seen is tucked away in the Wii experience videos, because they showcase the vast oceans of fun that the Wii can provide. How to communicate that to the masses of nongamers? Let them get their hands on a Wiimote. Perhaps this mall tour can do a little more of what the kiosks are supposed to do. And if you're near a Westfield mall between November 15th and January 13th, maybe you can see it in action. Take a nongamer friend and put a Wiimote in their hand. It'll work, because peer pressure is what friends do best.

Nintendo Fusion Tour begins, no one listens to the music

Truth be told, if you're headed off to one of the Nintendo Fusion Tour in numerous locations around the country, you're probably not heading there for the music. Hawthorne Heights and Relient K may excite the plebian youth, but not seasoned and impossibly articulate gamers such as ourselves. No, we are drawn to higher forms of art and diversion. Like, you know, pretending to hula hoop to earn a green checkmark on a bright screen.

In any case, the NFT kicked off with its opening act in Columbus, Ohio last night, and we've got some early impressions of the event. Wii and DS units galore, but nothing Earth-shattering, save perhaps for the mysterious disappearance of the glowing blue light from the propietary slot-loading DVD drive. It's a rather disturbing absence, as that remains on the coolest aesthetic features of the console. Is it gone for good? Read the full impressions after the jump.

Go to concert, play with the Wii

As gamers, you're probably only concerned with music composed by Nobuo Uematsu or Michiru Yamane, when in fact there is a whole world of alternatives, good alternatives out there. So do yourself a bit of good, go out into that wide world (watch out for bears) and discover things for yourself. Oh, and while you're out there, why not attend a concert and play with the Wii. Some of the bands playing in the Nintendo Fusion Tour 2006 are Hawthorne Heights, Relient K, Emery, and The Plain White T's.

There's no mention as to what capacity the Wii's presence will be in at the show, but something is better than nothing, eh? For those who did not get to try the console at the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo, this is a good chance to give it a spin before it launches.

Video Games Live seats in Indy up for sale

Tickets are now on sale for the two Video Games Live shows planned in conjunction with Gen Con Indy Friday & Saturday, August 11-12.

After a stop in Philly earlier this month, the VGL tour is moving on to Houston July 14th, Chicago August 5th, and then Indianapolis the weekend after that. More on reserving seats for the Hilbert Circle Theatre can be found on the official announcement page (via the pic to the right or the Read link below).

Judging by the reviews of the Philly show so far, Video Games Live sounds like it could be a lot of fun. If they keep providing public access to Guitar Hero II, they may have sold this blogger on going already. We hope Midwestern gamers not attending the Chicago show can make a pitstop in Indy to keep Tommy's show on the road. So, yeah ... rock on.

Are you in Chicago tonight for the big PLAY! concert tomorrow, but weren't willing to shell out $125 for the VIP meet-and-greet at the event? Well, you might be in luck (even if you're not attending), as a few famous folks from the concert will be on hand to sign autographs in Chicago proper for free tonight.

From 7 to 9 PM (presumably Central time) at the Tower Records store on 2301 N. Clark St., Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu, bilingual songstress Angela Aki (who wrote and sang the theme song for FFXII), and Principal Conductor and Music Director of PLAY! Arnie Roth will be signing autographs to promote the world-tour premiere of 'PLAY! A Video Game Symphony' and the CD for More Friends - Music from FINAL FANTASY.

While this blogger is sadly occupied with prior engagements tonight, gamers in the area are more than welcome to mob that Tower Records and cause the store's employees much consternation and bewilderment. If you don't have any imported CDs to sign, however, don't fret: the store's web site claims to have "some awesome Japanese imports available for you to purchase and have autographed at the event." Not only that, Angela Aki will be performing live as well. Score! Anybody wanna tell us how this evening turns out when it's all sung and done?

NCsoft's E3 booth tour

NCsoft's booth was mostly about the games, with banks of PC stations set up for passers-by to play at. There were plenty of knowledgeable staff on hand, and plenty of t-shirt giveaways. However, the booth's main attraction was its stage -- when we visited, The Mutaytor was helping to create the post-apocalyptic atmosphere appropriate to Tabula Rasa.

At other times in the day, Guild Wars tournaments took centre stage, with large crowds gathering to watch top PvP teams face off. Between this and the pyrotechnic dancing, we really managed to get a feel for the atmosphere of NCsoft's game offerings, something which few other booths managed to convey.

E3 booth tours: Magic the Gathering

These guys were almost hidden in the West Hall near our blogging setup on the show floor. But as you can see, Magic the Gathering has quite an interesting setup. During the time I checked it out, they were having a tournament for their multiplayer game.
