Remember the difficult keyboard-sharing procedures you and your friends had to adopt when playing the original You Don't Know Jack with three players? If the
GameStop listing
for the upcoming entry into the trivia franchise is correct, you won't have to keep in such close proximity this time around -- the game is mentioned under a GameStop splash page in a list of Kinect-compatible games.

We've contacted THQ to find out if the retailer's listing is on the level, and if so, what kind of gestures the game will be able to recognize. Most importantly, we need to know if it's going to work with the Game Boat. Otherwise, what's the point?
Have you ever wondered why you're so terrible at remembering the phone numbers, email addresses and, quite possibly, names of your dearest friends and family members? Simply put, it's because you're using all of your brainspace to store melodies for classic video games. Yeah, it's pretty tragic, but it's not completely without its usefulness -- it'll help you do really well in John Freeborn and Geekadelphia's recent Flash game collaboration, Sampla.

The premise of Sampla is simple: Listen to a clip from a MIDI-fied version of a classic video game theme song, and pick it from a multiple choice list. The faster you answer, the more points you get, and the deeper the stark reality sets in that you can remember the theme to Double Dragon 2, but not your dad's middle name.
Sampla tests your video game music knowledge, reflexes originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Apr 2010 02:17:00 EST. What are the two Sony Pictures Television game shows that THQ has licensed for video games?

The publisher announced that it has acquired multi-year licenses for the two venerable game shows, specifically for the Wii and DS/DSi, with options for other platforms. The first games will be out later this year.

A statement from THQ Kids, Family, and Casual Games Executive VP Doug Clemmer suggests that THQ has online play in mind for its adaptations: "The opportunity to implement new features such as Wii Speak will re-imagine how these games are played and engage fans with a whole new level of interactivity," he said. No longer will it be shameful to leave the show with naught but the home game!
Looking for a cheap way to stave off that post-holiday depression that we all immediately experience as soon as the last present is unwrapped? (You do experience that, right?) Microsoft's got new Xbox 360 owners covered -- from December 24 to December 28, 1 vs. 100 will be free-to-play for Xbox Live Silver subscribers. What's more, the show on December 26 will be deeply saturated with holiday spirit, featuring "Holiday-themed trivia, a decked out set, and laughs with Chris Cashman."

If you're still on the fence about subscribing to Live, you should give this free 1 vs. 100 trial a shot. After all, nothing can better distract you from the fact that you won't get to open more intricately ribboned gifts for another 364 days like taking part in an interactive game show.
1 vs. 100 free for Xbox Live Silver members from Dec. 24 - 28 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 22 Dec 2009 18:18:00 EST. If you've been missing your trivia fix on Xbox Live, you should be happy to learn that Microsoft has dated the second season of its Xbox Live quiz-'em-up, 1 vs. 100. Expect the game to return on November 19 at 5:00 PDT, where it'll dish out another 14 weeks' worth of questions -- and this time around, your chance to be The One or a part of The Mob will be determined by one thing: score.

Multiple-choice maniacs will be able to play the new season of 1 vs. 100 on a daily basis through themed Extended Play sessions every night, including "Finish the Lyrics," "80's" night and -- yes, we're totally serious -- "Vampires." Finally, a theme night your 12-year-old sister can get behind!
Second season of Xbox Live's 1 vs. 100 starts Nov. 19 originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 10:30:00 EST. Are you really friends with your Facebook friends? It's time to find out with the new Buzz! application. The "Friend Quiz" lets you and your invited friends to partake in a trivia contest about your mutual buddies. The quiz will draw information from mutual friends' status updates, comments, interests and photos.

Buzz will be narrating the entire game, so expect some snide remarks from the short British host. Each question, in typical Buzz! style, is timed: make sure you answer quickly to get the most points. At the end of the game, you'll be able to post your total score to your Wall, as you wait for your invited friends to beat you. It's a terrific twist on classic Buzz! gameplay, and best of all -- it's free.

[Via PlayStation.Blog Europe]
Test your friendship with Buzz! on Facebook originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 09 Oct 2009 11:30:00 EST. The battle of the console-exclusive peripheral-wielding weirdly-punctuated trivia games has come to an end ... with PlayStation the victor. WBIE is bringing Scene It?, the former 360-exclusive trivia game, to PS3 and Wii. While the 360 version was bundled with a set of special Scene It? controllers, the PS3 and Wii versions of the game will let you simply use your ol' fashioned DualShocks and Wii Remotes.

But what if you want to use a wacky peripheral? Don't fret, as you'll be able to use your BUZZ! controllers with Scene It?. Considering many of the modes of Scene It? require buzzing in, the translation is incredibly faithful.
Scene It? *will* use BUZZ! controllers (on PS3™) originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Sep 2009 22:00:00 EST. Though the next installment of Sony's trivia-tastic Buzz franchise, Buzz! Quiz TV is still a few weeks from release, the company recently launched a web component for the game for would-be American quiz crafters. Titled MyBuzz, the site allows users to create quizzes which can either be taken online, or in-game when Quiz TV hits U.S. store shelves Sept. 23. Users can also rate quizzes submitted by other community members -- Sony is offering a PSP-3000 and a copy of Buzz! Master Quiz for the user with the "Top Quiz", and a PS3/Quiz TV bundle for the "All Time Top Author". One caveat -- hiring a local bridge troll to write your noggin-scratchers for you will result in immediate disqualification.
Sony launches MyBUZZ in U.S., includes prizes for best quizmaster originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 14 Sep 2008 20:30:00 EST. Billed as a casual game for hardcore gamers, this original title takes the bland and basic multiple-choice trivia format, spicing it up with an intriguing storyline, a gaming theme, and a chiptune soundtrack provided by artists like 8-Bit Terror and PDF format.

Instead of solving math equations or recalling historical facts, players will have to put their useless gaming knowledge to work and answer questions like "Which of these games was NOT designed by Yu Suzuki?" or "Which Mario game did Super Mario Advance remake?"

It's a short game -- you can probably finish it within 15 minutes -- but Multiple: Option deserves praise for creating an entertaining title that doesn't rely on the assets or designs of other developers. If you have the equipment to play homebrew games, we definitely suggest you try this one out. Let us know if you're able to score any higher than a "C" without cheating and using the internet!
Game Trivia Catechism: Casual, homebrew gaming for the hardcore gamer originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 21 Jul 2008 22:00:00 EST. EA is bringing the card deck game Brain Quest to the DS, which sounds like North America's answer to Japan's Quiz Magic Academy and Europe's Super Brain Tease. Only, those of you familiar with Brain Quest will know that it's not as cool as Quiz Magic Academy, not to mention that it's for kids.

While such news probably seems like a bore to the majority of you out-of-the-demographic folks, we bet that a lot of young'ns will actually enjoy the game. This blogger remembers playing plenty of Brain Quest back in the day and loving it. Not only will it have multiplayer and single-player modes, but Brain Quest will also include a bunch of children's Sudoku puzzles on the side.

If you know any elementary schoolers who might be interested in this title, keep in mind that it comes out this September for $29.99.
Trivia takes a Brain Quest to the DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 22:00:00 EST. Through arcades, series that most of us in the West are unfamiliar with become super-popular in Japan. Take, for instance, Quiz Magic Academy.

Since popularity often leads to system jumping, it should come as no surprise that the game is making its way to the DS. It's essentially a trivia title, but what makes it so appealing is its eight player Wi-Fi support. Trivia is at its best when you're competing against others and showing off your vast pools of useless knowledge, so this extensive use of online-play is most certainly appealing. Unlike games such as LOL (aka just LOL), though, you can still choose to solo your way through Quiz Magic Academy if you prefer to go it alone.

Other nifty features in this arcade-cum-DS title are that it transmits new questions wirelessly, and also links up to Quiz Magic Academy V, the as-of-yet unreleased arcade sequel.

All in all, it seems like Konami has taken trivia as far as it can go. Well, color us jealous.

[Via Siliconera]
Quiz Magic Academy presents worthwhile trivia on the DS originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 16 Jun 2008 20:00:00 EST. If there was ever a game destined to really nail a niche market in North America, it's this game. Japanese-speaking Hanshin Tigers fans, with a deep knowledge of the team's history and players, will be all over importing this bad boy. There's a new twist to this heartwarming story of an underdog title coming out to compete against the big evil <strike>team</strike> game -- it's not just trivia anymore.

Along with a new batch of screens, we've discovered the inclusion of mini-games, good for letting your hair down after all that baseball question-answering work. You'll be hitting them out of the park in Home Run Contest, doing something else (we have no idea, sorry) in Lucky 7, and also enjoying a bit of karaoke ... somehow. Baseball is one popular sport, and importing Hanshin Tigers DS when it releases on August 28 will make you one popular gamer.

Hanshin Tigers DS probably not coming to a store near you originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 13:15:00 EST. Lexicon Entertainment is even banking on that assumption, as the company is releasing five different trivia games under the Super Brain Tease license. Each game will have a different subject, giving you a choice from the following:

Football (aka soccer, for those of us in the U.S.)

History

Geography

Music

Movies

We find it amusing that you Brits are so crazy about your soccer, er, football, that Lexicon has ditched a broader "Sports" category in favor of something so specific. All poking fun aside, though, should these titles sell well enough they'll only be the first of many.

The main allure of such games, we're sure, will be their budget price points, as each edition will be offered for £9.99. If the idea of trivia at such a cost interests you, you can expect to see the Super Brain Tease series hit retail in Q4.

[Via press release]
Test your useless knowledge with Super Brain Tease originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 May 2008 22:32:00 EST.
Gameloft's first WiiWare entry, TV Show King, might turn away most gamers with its casual premise and 1000 Wii Points tag, but the publisher has made an effort to pack value in the trivia title -- 3,000 questions, Mii integration, and a game show atmosphere complete with a smarmy host and a busty blonde. Spike's Hanshin Tigers DS is in direct contrast to that title, in that it is absolutely realistic, lacking even the "fantasy" of pretending to play baseball. There's nothing more "realistic" than facts! While 2K's title is a baseball game that breaks away from accurate depictions of players and abilities, Hanshin Tigers DS is a strictly factual interpretation of baseball with no actual baseball involved.

Somehow, the Japanese game market is capable of sustaining this incredibly specialized game. It's not just a trivia game -- it's a baseball trivia game. About only one team, the Hanshin Tigers (who have been honored with pinstriped Gamecubes and Neo Geo Pocket Color systems!).

Hanshin Tigers DS: the opposite of MLB 2K8 Fantasy All-Stars originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 17:00:00 EST. Well, that didn't take long. SCEA has just announced that Buzz! is also coming to America. Previously announced for Europe only, this trivia game promises to do more than bring the successful PS2 trivia game to the handheld. With a new focus on multiplayer, and gaming sharing, the PSP edition of Buzz! should have people ... well, buzzing.

Look for it this summer.

Buzz! announced for North American release originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 13 Feb 2008 00:00:00 EST. That cheeky game show host is finally coming to PSP. The insanely popular PS2 trivia game is going to Sony's handheld, with a slew of enhancements ideal for the portable gamer. The most notable addition: Game Sharing, which allows you to play multiplayer against three other PSP owners with just one copy of the game. The game is currently announced for a UK release, but we're certain that the recent US release of the PS2 version of the game will make this a more international affair.

Key Features:

Three new multiplayer modes, all requiring either just one PSP or one copy of the game to enjoy: Pass Around, Game Share and Quiz Host

Bigger and better single player mode than ever before, with 15 quiz challenges to test your knowledge to its limits

Six all-new single and multiplayer round types specially created for PSP

Over 5000 unique questions alongside over 1000 licensed picture and video assets

Eight question categories: Music, TV, Science, Celebrities, Nature, Sport, Movies and General Knowledge

As the latest screenshot update on the official website illustrates, Raoh's storyline is playable in addition to Kenshiro's.

This follows outside of the main game as well, with this Raoh-spotting minigame. We've seen some weird minigames in our tenure as DS fans, but this one may manage to be the freakiest yet. Given a selection of four details from manga panels, you are asked to pick which depiction of Raoh features Raoh crying over his brother Toki. That's actually not the whole of the game; it's a wireless multiplayer trivia game, which is a neat addition. Still, for us it's always going to be the crying-Raoh game.

Lest you think Raoh is weak, we should tell you why he's crying over his brother Toki: it's because he has just punched Toki almost to death, and is about to punch him all the way to death. You'd cry too.
Fist of the North Star's sensitive minigame originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 19:00:00 EST. And, if it's possible to be disappointed by Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, that's how we feel.

The two screens we are shown are nothing but text and the game/show's logo. The text in the trivia question is presented as writing on a chalkboard, but uses a typewriter font. At least they didn't try to fake handwriting with Comic Sans or something.

Anyway, the game sounds about right: 3000 questions, and you can get help from five fake children. You also have access to the helpful "cheat" options found on the show. The collection of 23 minigames will be familiar to bar patrons everywhere, as they come from Midway's touch screen range.

The minigames include trivia, solitaire, and a range of card and puzzle games. You'll also be able to upload your high scores onto worldwide leaderboards. Better start saving that beer money now-- Touchmaster DS goes on sale June 11th in North America.

With a free PC version scheduled for May, maybe educators will begin using iPods as teaching tools in the same way as PSPs.

While the iQuiz tool is suited to trivia games, we hope that Aspyr or others will release simple iPod game tools for other genres. However, our wish is tempered by how closed the iPod is to developers; there would be a lot of great games--and sure, bad ones too--if anyone could program for that MP3 player.
Create iPod quizzes with free utility originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 26 Apr 2007 21:55:00 EST. Each week a new episode is released featuring several questions, including a DisOrDat as well as Jack Attack, a fast-paced match-the-pair question. All of this is wrapped in a creamy coating of narration provided by the witty (and covertly insulting) Cookie.

Jellyvision will still roll out 3-4 DisOrDats per week in addition to the full episodes. It's enough Jack to make you feel like you actually do know ... Jack.
You Don't Know Jack full episodes online originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 20 Mar 2007 08:35:00 EST. But ANA Original Gotouchi Kentei DS (Local Trivia DS) is a special kind of weird: an updated ANA-themed version of developer Spike's (non)game about Japan trivia. The original version covered writing, geography, and other concepts in order to test players' knowledge of their home country. We have no idea what the new ANA version will be about-- airline history? Identifying famous places in Japan based on aerial photos? Airplane safety procedures?

What we do know is how unlikely any of us are to see it. Only 3,000 copies are being produced, and they're being given away to ANA travelers along with DS Lites. So it's either flying the friendly skies or traversing the murky waters of eBay.

[Via Famitsu]
All Nippon Airways giving away DS trivia game originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 27 Feb 2007 11:30:00 EST.
Be European (depending on your circumstances, this is either the easiest or hardest step).

Download the latest update.

Click on the little smiley emoticon.

So far, there's not much other than a blurb about Kirby (a "blurby"), but it's going to be a trivia channel about Nintendo characters! An encyclopedia of gaming! Now, in a marriage of gaming goodness that seems so obvious in retrospect that we're surprised it took them so long, Midway is bringing a collection of some of their best touch screen games to the DS. Entitled Touchmaster DS, the game will include 23 different games from the arcade machines, including trivia, card games, and puzzlers.

Sounds pretty average for a collection of casual games ... but there's a twist. Touchmaster DS will use the Nintendo WiFi connection to interface with Midway's own scoring system, so player rankings will be compared with those of people all over the world. Players will also be able to participate in tournaments.

Midway expects to release the game later this year.
Casual gaming, hardcore competition with Touchmaster originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Jan 2007 17:00:00 EST. No more! This month saw the premiere of YouDontKnowJack.com, and the Daily DisOrDat -- a two-minute, Flash-based matching quiz updated every weekday with You Don't Know Jack's trademark voice acting and comic pacing.

Being online means the questions can be a little more topical than the dated references in the classic disc games. Today's quiz is about Donald Rumsfeld, for instance, and gamers might find this quiz oddly familiar. What's more, the setups are genuinely funny, and there are quite a few laugh-out-loud moments to be found in the archives.

We're not one to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything, but we can't help but imagine the possibilities for online versions of other Jack favorites like Gibberish Questions or even the Jack Attack. And would some multiplayer modes have killed them? I mean Jack ain't jack without a friend. We'd even be willing to pay or look at ads or something if it comes to that. Just, please, give us more Jack!

[Via Game|Life]
Did you know?: You Don't Know Jack is back originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 21 Dec 2006 10:30:00 EST. For those of you not so in the know, here are some factoids we picked up on while tinkering this weekend.

It doesn't play CDs, but it plays AVIs off your digital camera's SD card.

The flaps that protect the Gamecube controllers and memory card slots are removable.

Wii Sports includes training and workout modes.

You can let one remote control all four players in Wii Sports: Tennis.

It takes five pieces of heart to make a heart container in Zelda: Twilight Princess

The box includes two clear plastic holders: one for the sensor bar and another that acts as a stabilizer for the thick, gray console stand

When used as a pointer, the Wii detects how far the remote is from the sensor bar.

The system keeps track of your cumulative play time for all games, and logs it on your Wii's daily message board.

The standard A/V cables that have worked on every Nintendo system since the SNES do not work on the Wii (the system-side input is different)

The system doubles as a great whiteboard.

But seriously, these chumps missed some seriously easy questions: the house of Pac-Man merged with the house of Gundam to form NamcoBandai; Geometry Wars originally appeared in Project Gotham Racing 2; and Final Fantasy was the game series with a non-continuous storyline but always has a character named Cid. This stuff ain't that hard.

The realities of human anatomy and the sinewy strength of muscle tissue were the only things keeping the heavens-stretched arms of the audience from reaching themselves straight off their bodies. The "ooh oohs" and "I know, I knows" were cacophonous and it appeared that more answers were coming from the peanut gallery than the podium.

Thing is, Alon tells us that he tried his darndest to find some worthy contestants. He handed out sixty quizzes to PAX attendees (fer'chris'sakes!) with five gaming trivia questions to choose his combatants; unfortunately, no one got them all right. If everyone knew he had fourteen DS Lites bundled with Starfox Command, we're sure people would have been banging down these doors.

[Update: added image of final score after the break. I didn't. I guessed and got it right. But if you're fidgeting in your seat, arm stretched towards the gaming heavens, gulping out, "I do! I do! Ooh me. Ooh, oooh!" then I won't call on you 'cause you're annoying. Instead, I'll direct the entire class towards the latest in our good buddy (we've never met him, we just like him a lot) Patrick Curry's mad dash of weekly game designs: game designer trivia.

"Game Designer Trivia is a very simple game. It asks you to name who designed a certain game, or which game a certain designer created. As you answer correctly you build up points and improve your "batting average." After answering so many questions the game tells you how you're doing. Like I said - a simple trivia game."

It works as promised, although there is a tendency for the routine to repeat questions, or ask the same question inversely. All this did was help maintain my perfect batting average ... now I have to go outside and read a book. Remember kids, winning isn't everything.

[Via Tiny Subversions]
Test your game designer knowledge, impress your friend originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 12 Jul 2006 17:15:00 EST.
