It's not enough just to play games anymore. Nowadays, you have to watch them too. That just got a little easier on the Xbox 360, thanks to a new Twitch.tv app. The streaming app is now available for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, offering "access to 300 of the most popular streams," including tournaments, all organized by game or popularity.

Twitch will host a special live broadcast with Xbox Live guru Major Nelson following next week's "Xbox Revealed" event on May 21. The broadcast will air on Twitch.tv and the Twitch app on Xbox 360, beginning at 3pm Eastern. The event itself, incidentally, starts at 1pm Eastern. Tune into Joystiq for lots of live coverage.
Twitch app now broadcasting on Xbox 360 originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 14 May 2013 11:30:00 EST. Streaming site Twitch.tv revealed that it already has a dedicated viewing app on the tiny crowdfunded console at launch.

Ouya is officially the first console with a native Twitch app ... if only because the Xbox 360 app, announced at E3, has been delayed. Or maybe you just didn't snag tickets in time, or you couldn't find someone to watch your cats this weekend. Whatever the reason you can't come out to PAX East, Twitch has you covered with live streams of main stage panels, concerts and the Omegathon tournament.

Check out the PAX channel on Twitch this weekend for live streams such as Storytime with Cliff Bleszinski on Friday, Indie Studios Founded by 38 Studios Alumni on Saturday and You Game Like a Girl: Tales of Trolls and White Knights on Sunday. The full schedule is below. If Twitch shows any footage of the show floor, be on the lookout for your favorite Joystiq staff: We'll be the ones grinning maniacally and/or teetering on the edge of a claustrophobic breakdown.
Continue reading PAX East 2013 live stream schedule

PAX East 2013 live stream schedule originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 20 Mar 2013 23:30:00 EST. For $8.99 a month you can turn off all the ads on the site, get priority customer support, and unlock a special badge, chat colors, and custom emoticons that only Twitch Turbo subscribers can use. Twitch also streams lots of eSports events and other videos that would otherwise be interrupted by commercials.

If you subscribe to knock the ads off completely, eligible Twitch broadcasters will still be paid for their views. Twitch says this is "just the beginning of what we hope to offer through Twitch Turbo," and that more "benefits and enhancements" for both viewers and broadcasters (including the official Joystiq Twitch channel) are likely coming soon.
Twitch introduces ad-free Turbo subscription service originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 05 Feb 2013 01:00:00 EST. In an interview with Venturebeat, Twitch VP of Marketing Matthew DiPietro says the money will allow the company to expand its engineering team and improve its live video streaming services.

"That's the kind of entrepreneurs we like to work with," said Ethan Kurzweil, Vice President at Bessemer Venture Partners, which put up the money. "They created this market. They created a whole phenomenon."

Twitch states it now has over 20 million unique viewers per month. The site has raised $23 million to date, with a small seed round in 2005 and an $8 million investment as Justin.tv back in 2007.
Twitch receives $15 million investment to expand eSports broadcasts originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 20 Sep 2012 06:00:00 EST. It's circa 1999, and I'm in my freshman college dorm room, playing a game on my Windows 98 computer. It uses a clunky CRT monitor that takes up most of my desk, but on that monitor a series of images flashes by -- walls, a floor, a skybox overhead, more walls, more floors. Quickly, there's a flash of an colorful icon on the screen, and in first-person view I bound towards it. Just as I grab the quad-damage and jump off a cliff, an opponent appears in my peripheral. While falling through the air, I instantly move my mouse around just so, click the button, and my rocket lands perfectly alongside the enemy avatar, bursting it into a spray of gory red pixels.

A real-life cry of anguish is heard from down the hall, where my floormate has just had to click to respawn. I smile, and run off to look for more prey.

That's the feeling that made playing Quake 2 so magical back in the day, and Nexuiz is a direct descendant of that line. It was originally an open source shooter based off of the Quake engine, and developer IllFonic has now remade the game in CryEngine 3, set for release on Xbox Live Arcade next month. And though the Microsoft booth at CES 2012 is a long way away from my dorm room in both space and time, just a few minutes of gameplay pointed me right back to that formative experience.
