"Blap! Blap! Blap!" she'd shout. And things really haven't been the same since you traded up to a Vita, what with its lack of support for many PSP titles. <em>We understand</em>.<br /><br />Thankfully, so does Sony. This morning, the US PlayStation blog announced today's launch of several PSP games on the Vita (including Grandma's fave), as well as a variety of PSP Minis (full list after the break). As usual, if you already own the games digitally for your PSP, all you'll have to do is re-download the files to your PSN-tied Vita. If not, well, you'll have to pony up some virtual cash.<br /><br />Interestingly, Sony also mentioned "improved playability" for some titles beyond the up-res'd graphics - we're checking to see what exactly that means. The line has since been removed from Sony's blog post.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/finally-you-can-play-cho-aniki-zero-on-your-vita-finally/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Finally, you can play Cho Aniki Zero on your Vita (finally!)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/05/15/finally-you-can-play-cho-aniki-zero-on-your-vita-finally/">Finally, you can play Cho Aniki Zero on your Vita (finally!)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 15 May 2012 22:00:00 EST. If you expected the Vita's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/11/umd-passport-application-moves-umd-based-psp-games-to-the-vita/">"UMD Passport" program</a> to be comprehensive, allowing you access to downloads of all your UMD-based PSP games at launch, you weren't paying attention to the last console generation.<br />
<br />
Sony posted the list of games available at launch in Japan, including 262 games from publishers like Atlus, Nippon Ichi, Acquire, Kaga Create, Alchemist, Tecmo Koei, and SNK. As of now, no games from major publishers like Square Enix, Capcom, EA, Namco Bandai, Sega, or Konami are available for download. Sony does say <a href="http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvita/compatibility/umd/title/">elsewhere</a> that other publishers, including all those, are "planning" to support the program.<br />
<br />
The "discounted" prices for UMD owners to get Vita-playable downloads of their games range from &yen;500 ($6.44) to &yen;1,500 ($19.38), with one pachislot title as a &yen;2,400 ($31) outlier.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/01/vitas-umd-passport-offers-less-than-complete-set-of-games-in/">Vita's 'UMD Passport' offers less-than-complete set of games in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 01 Dec 2011 09:50:00 EST. Sony <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/sony-looking-into-umd-download-discount-for-vita-hedging-about/2">realizes</a> that you, Japanese PlayStation Portable owner, want to keep playing your UMD version of<em> Nano Diver</em> when the PlayStation Vita <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/14/vita-launches-in-japan-on-december-17th/">launches on December 17</a>. The Japanese electronics giant last night announced its "UMD Passport" program, wherein PSP owners can download a free application to register their UMD games and receive a discount on repurchases of said games through the Vita's digital distribution store.<br />
<br />
The repurchase price varies from game to game, but it averages between 500 and 1,000 yen ($6 to $13), going as high as &yen;2,400 ($31). And to get a jump on the conversion process, Sony will be releasing the PSP app on December 6. It's unclear whether the Passport program will arrive Stateside or in Europe when the Vita launches early next year in other territories, but we expect Sony will reveal as much in the coming months.<br />
<br />
The initial titles included in the program are <a href="http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvita/compatibility/umd/title/">detailed by Sony here</a>, and the company apparently intends on expanding it to approximately 200 games.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/11/umd-passport-application-moves-umd-based-psp-games-to-the-vita/">'UMD Passport' application moves UMD-based PSP games to the Vita (for a price)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 11 Nov 2011 08:10:00 EST. It wouldn't be a PlayStation system without complicated backwards compatibility issues. A new <a href="http://www.jp.playstation.com/psvita/faq/game/2.html">Japanese-language FAQ</a> posted by Sony offers some new wrinkles, both potentially good and bad.<br />
<br />
The FAQ notes that Sony is "considering" a service to offer PSN versions of the UMD games users own for a "special price." This isn't a confirmation, but at least Sony is looking into some method to make it possible to play the UMD games you bought on your Vita. "Details of this service will be announced at a later date." That's the good news.<br />
<br />
The bad news: the FAQ says that the Vita will play all downloadable PSP games ... except for Game Archives, which is the Japanese label for PSOne Classics, Neo Geo games, and other retro downloads. Sony will have more details about this limitation later, but the fact that there's more to it than "they all work" is troubling. We really hope we'll be able to play the PSOne games we've already bought ... and that we won't have to buy them again in their Android/PlayStation Suite incarnations.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/10/13/sony-looking-into-umd-download-discount-for-vita-hedging-about/">Sony looking into UMD download discount for Vita, hedging about PSOne Classics support</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Oct 2011 11:55:00 EST. Backwards compatibility with legacy game formats isn't the sort of make-or-break feature that determines the fate of a new hardware system, but it does score major bonus points with the manufacturer's fan base when it does work -- and elicits plenty of groans when it doesn't. When it comes to Sony's next (generation) portable the answer to "will it play my UMD games" is <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/screenshots/sony-ngp-hardware#/2">clearly</a> "no" -- not even the PSP Go supports the original hardware's disc format -- but UMD owners are still hoping the company will do something about it.<br />
<br />
Speaking with Japanese tech site <a href="http://gigazine.net/news/20110131_ngp_umd_sce/">Gigazine</a> (as translated by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/01/31/umd_ngp_releases/">Andriasang</a>), a PlayStation representative reiterated that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ngp">NGP</a> will support the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_downloadable_PSP_games">growing list</a> of PSP games available in digital format from the PlayStation Store. Unsurprisingly, Sony has no plans to develop an attachable "UMD reader" for NGP (despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/14/sony-patent-for-last-gen-console-adapter-surfaces/">filing</a> a patent that leaves open the possibility), and the UMD-to-digital "good will program" has been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/sony-america-scraps-umd-to-psp-go-conversion-plans/">dead</a> for 16 months now.<br />
<br />
Gigazine does report that Sony mentioned plans to re-release original PSP games on the NGP's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/ngp-features-two-proprietary-card-slots-for-memory-storage-game/">new game media</a> (flash memory-based cards), though the representative did not detail the possibility further. Certainly, it would be a no-brainer -- even if card-based re-releases could generate some "ill will" from existing UMD owners -- and the expanded storage size of the proposed new card format suggests that old PSP games could be sold in single-card collections or added to NGP game cards as bonuses. Or how about PSP re-releases with "NGP" treatment? Admit it -- you'd buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/metal-gear-solid-peace-walker"><em>Peace Walker</em></a> again if dual-analog and touch controls were added, not to mention some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/27/metal-gear-solid-4-demonstrated-on-ngp/"><em>MGS4-ish</em></a> graphics.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/31/psp-umd-games-could-be-re-released-on-ngp-game-cards/">PSP UMD games could be re-released on NGP game cards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 31 Jan 2011 12:00:00 EST. How novel! <em>Lord of Arcana</em> will be released in North America, on both PSN and UMD, on January 25.<br />
<br />
While <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/21/lord-of-arcana-preview/">our own experience</a> with the bloody PSP adventure didn't leave us terribly impressed, the game was directed by <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/deadly-premonition">Deadly Premonition</a></em> creator Hidetaka "Swery65" Suehiro. So maybe it'll turn out to be a misunderstood, quirky masterpiece, instead of just a bad game.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/lord-of-arcana-psp-release-date-january-25/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Lord of Arcana grants PSP an audience on Jan. 25</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/lord-of-arcana-psp-release-date-january-25/">Lord of Arcana grants PSP an audience on Jan. 25</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 19:30:00 EST. If you've ever found yourself in the proverbial club (perhaps with a bottle full of bub), then you may be familiar with Pentavision's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dj-max"><em>DJ Max</em></a> -- a <em>Beatmania</em>-like music-rhythm series with some of the most intense gameplay in the genre. Today, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/pm-studios">PM Studios</a> has announced it will publish <em>DJ Max Portable 3</em> in the US.<br />
<br />
PM Studios promises "more than 50 songs, unique modes, customizable options, and a yet to be announced new feature." The game is set to launch sometime in 2010 on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/umd">UMD</a> and as a download on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psn">PSN</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/25/dj-max-portable-3-coming-to-psp-in-2010/">DJ Max Portable 3 coming to PSP in 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 25 May 2010 15:45:00 EST. Excuse the pun, but we had nearly forgotten about the PSP version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands"><em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands</em></a>. While Ubisoft has been busy promoting the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii counterparts, it's only now that it has unveiled the PSP version. Joel Vignola, Ubisoft producer, debuted a new video on the <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/13/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands-built-specifically-for-psp/">PlayStation.Blog</a> (embedded after the break) and emphasized that the PSP version is a "unique game built from the ground up" and "is not a port from any other system."<br />
<br />
While the console versions are full 3D adventures, the PSP version appears to play on a 2D field, akin to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/prince-of-persia-classic"><em>Prince of Persia Classic</em></a>. However, Vignola clarified a bit further, describing the game as a "3D sidescroller, because the world itself is 3D and we play with depth ... the Prince [is] not always locked onto an axis."<br />
<br />
As with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/assassins-creed-bloodlines"><em>Assassin's Creed Bloodlines</em></a>, <em>The Forgotten Sands</em> is promising connectivity between the PS3 and PSP versions of the game. By connecting the two, you'll be awarded bonus XP in the PS3 version and the original <em>Sands of Time</em> costume for the PSP version. Hopefully, the similarities with the PSP <em>Assassin's Creed</em> end there -- <em>Bloodlines</em> wasn't exactly a <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/psp/assassinscreedbloodlines">critical darling</a>.<br />
<br />
The PSP version of <em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands</em> will be available on UMD and PSN on the same day as its console counterparts: May 18.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands-returns-to-2d-gameplay-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands returns to 2D gameplay on PSP</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/14/prince-of-persia-the-forgotten-sands-returns-to-2d-gameplay-on/">Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands returns to 2D gameplay on PSP</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 May 2010 19:00:00 EST. It feels like it's been too long since the last <em>Hot Shots</em> game. That'll change in late June, though, with the arrival of <em>Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip</em> for PSP. According to <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/05/13/hot-shots-tennis-get-a-grip-helghast-invade-psp/">PlayStation Blog</a>, this isn't a port of the 2007 PS2 <em>Hot Shots Golf</em> spin-off, but rather a new <em>Hot Shots Tennis</em> game, featuring an "all-new tennis adventure." And by adventure, they mean it. The new Story Mode will require exploration, as you travel the world "spreading tennis love to everyone and anyone you meet." Sounds a bit like <em>Mario Tennis</em>, no?<br />
<br />
New to the US version of <em>Hot Shots Tennis</em> will be the <em>Killzone</em> Helghast character (pictured). Finally -- a <em>Killzone</em> game filled with color! <em>Get a Grip</em> will launch simultaneously on UMD and PSN on June 29.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/13/hot-shots-tennis-get-a-grip-on-june-29/">Hot Shots Tennis: Get A Grip on June 29</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 13:29:00 EST. If our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/fat-princess-fistful-of-cake-preview/">comprehensive video preview</a> of <em>Fat Princess</em> for PSP whet your appetite for more, you'll be glad to know that the full experience isn't too far away. <em>Fistful of Cake</em> will be appearing on both UMD and PSN on April 27, promising "new game modes, new maps, a new extended storyline for single player." And although the single player options have been greatly expanded, multiplayer remains a big focus for the game, with 8-player Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure support.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/19/fat-princess-fistful-of-cake-trailer-and-interview/">PlayStation.Blog</a> features a Q&amp;A, a new trailer (posted after the break) and box art. Curiously missing from the announcement, however, is a price. An SCEA rep told us the price has yet to be "100% confirmed," and that an announcement would be forthcoming.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/19/fat-princess-fistful-of-cake-squeezes-onto-umd-and-psn-april-27/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake squeezes onto UMD and PSN April 27</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/19/fat-princess-fistful-of-cake-squeezes-onto-umd-and-psn-april-27/">Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake squeezes onto UMD and PSN April 27</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 19 Mar 2010 22:30:00 EST. The tower defense title has been available digitally since <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/09/28/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-invading-psp-this-week/">last fall</a>.<br />
<br />
Interestingly, Cuthbert originally <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/19/piracy-discourages-future-pixeljunk-psp-port-plans/">cited piracy</a> as the reason for the lack of a worldwide release for the UMD of Deluxe, previously released in Japan and elsewhere in Asia. Try not to pirate this one, so we can see more nice discs like this in the future.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/pixeljunk-monsters-deluxe-on-umd-in-north-america-this-april/">PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe on UMD in North America this April</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 22:30:00 EST. The PSP version of <em>Persona 3</em> isn't a direct port of the original PS2 RPG. Instead, it streamlines the experience for handheld play and adds a new playable female character, with her own "Social Links, special events, and unique romantic opportunities." In addition, <em>P3P</em> adds a few cameos from <em>Persona 4</em>, and introduces five difficulty settings, ranging from "beginner" to "maniac." The battle system has also drastically changed, with players able to directly control teammates.<br />
<br />
The UMD version will be available at retail on July 6th, with a PSN version expected soon after. Check out the box art after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/persona-3-portable/">Persona 3 Portable</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/persona-3-portable/#2636458"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/01/p3pscreens01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/persona-3-portable/#2636459"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/01/p3pscreens02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/persona-3-portable/#2636460"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/01/p3pscreens03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/persona-3-portable/#2636461"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/01/p3pscreens04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/persona-3-portable/#2636462"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2010/01/p3pscreens05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/persona-3-portable-coming-to-north-america-on-july-6/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Persona 3 Portable coming to North America on July 6</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/20/persona-3-portable-coming-to-north-america-on-july-6/">Persona 3 Portable coming to North America on July 6</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 20 Jan 2010 13:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Metal-Slug-xx">Metal Slug: Double X</a> -- the upgraded, multiplayer-capable PSP remix of the Nintendo DS title <em>Metal Slug 7</em> -- is rounding the corner to its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/05/metal-slug-xx-psp/">UMD-exclusive</a> release February 23 on PSP. Apart from adding a new coat of paint, <em>Double X</em> adds support an ad-hoc two-player multiplayer mode, 70 missions and a kitchen sink full of blood and bullets. What? You don't believe the game has a hearty dose of hot lead? Allow us (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Atlus/">Atlus</a>) to prove it with the brand new trailer above. Hopefully, the third time is the charm for <em>SOCOM Fireteam Bravo</em>. After <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/28/socom-fireteam-bravo-3-also-joins-the-q1-party/">two</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/21/socom-fireteam-bravo-3-delayed-one-more-time/">delays</a>, the Slant Six-developed co-op shooter is finally making its way to PSP on February 16 on both UMD and PlayStation Network.<br />
<br />
As per usual, online multiplayer is central to the upcoming <em>SOCOM</em> sequel. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/socom-fireteam-bravo-3"><em>Fireteam Bravo 3</em></a> will not only support sixteen player Infrastructure play, it also features <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/05/28/you-and-3-friends-can-play-socom-fireteam-bravo-3/">four-player co-op</a> -- a first for the franchise. Considering Slant Six's track record, it'll either play like the brilliant <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/socom-tactical-strike"><em>SOCOM Tactical Strike</em></a> ... or like <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/socom-confrontation"><em>SOCOM Confrontation</em></a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/07/socom-fireteam-bravo-3-deployed-february-16/">SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 deployed February 16</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 07 Jan 2010 15:30:00 EST. Above, you'll see a snippet of the box art for <em>Metal Slug: Double X</em> -- one X short of ESRB problems. While the box touts a PlayStation Network logo, the game will only be compatible with the classic PSP-1000 through 3000 series. Why? An Atlus representative tells Joystiq that the publisher has no plans to release a downloadable version on the PlayStation Store; though a digital copy of 2007's <em>Metal Slug Anthology </em>(published by SNK) is currently available.<br />
<br />
Launching February 23 exclusively on UMD, the upcoming 2D shooter, which is an updated version of <em>Metal Slug 7</em> for DS, will feature seven levels, 70 mission-based challenges and an ad-hoc two-player multiplayer mode. With a $20 price tag, <em>Metal Slug: Double X</em> sounds like a deal. Too bad PSP Go owners, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/third-parties-not-required-to-release-psp-games-on-playstation-s/">once again</a>, will be unable to cash in.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/05/metal-slug-xx-psp/">Atlus bringing Metal Slug XX to UMD in February</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 05 Jan 2010 12:27:00 EST. Did you miss the first release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/badman"><em>Holy Invasion of Privay, Badman!</em></a>? Don't worry if you did, because it appears NIS America is readying a spectacular bonus for the upcoming sequel. According to an <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0031AV9K6?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=prey0f&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B0031AV9K6">Amazon.com listing</a>, the "complete original game [is] included for free." Yep, it's two games for the price of one, and who doesn't like a promo like that?<br />
<br />
It's unclear if this bonus will apply only to the UMD version of the game, or if the PSN version will also benefit. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/21/q-entertainment-music-licensing-other-issues-keeping-portable-lumines/">Considering</a> how <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/18/sorry-goers-littlebigplanet-psp-still-unavailable-for-psn-down/">often</a> PSP Go owners have been <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/travelers-tales-founder-psp-go-will-die-if-downloads-dont-get/">screwed</a>, we wouldn't be surprised if the digital release arrived late with no discount and no prequel bonus.<br />

Alas, we've gone yet another decade without a single jetpack, hovercar, hoverpack or jetcar. We've got high hopes for unimaginable technological advancement in the 2010s -- for instance, if a recent advertisement for a bundle of <em>LittleBigPlanet</em>-branded PSP accessories that ran in <a href="http://www.mcvuk.com/digital-edition">MCV's latest "Digital Edition"</a> is any indication, we're thinking that a new model of the old-school, UMD-equipped handheld might not be out of the question.<br />
<br />
Proudly printed on the ad is a lineup of PSP models the accessories are compatible with -- including the PSP-4000. Now, this could just be a mistake on the ad designer's part, or it could be an accidental hint of things to come. Maybe not <em>things</em> as awesome as sky-based personal transportation, but hey -- we'll take what we can get.<br />

While speaking at the Develop Jury Service (a pow-wow for industry figures to discuss current gaming trends and topics), Traveler's Tales founder Jon Burton <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/news/33424/PSPgo-will-die-without-software-price-cut-Burton">questioned the prolonged survival of the PSP Go</a> platform, since UMD games can often be purchased new or pre-owned at a lower price than the digital versions compatible with PSP Go. "I own a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a> but don't want to buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/littlebigplanet-psp"><em>LittleBigPlanet</em></a>, for instance, as I can get it 20-percent cheaper on UMD from Amazon and could resell it once I'm finished with it," Burton explained. "But if I download it, I get no discount, and no chance to resell -- how annoying is that?"<br />
<br />
According to Burton, PSP Go's all-digital system is more than just a minor inconvenience. He later added, "I'm betting on Sony making PSP Go games much cheaper than the UMD versions, or the PSP Go will die." Oh no! The PSP Go is <em>far</em> too tiny and adorable to die so young. Listen to the man, Sony!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/04/travelers-tales-founder-psp-go-will-die-if-downloads-dont-get/">Traveler's Tales founder: PSP Go will die if downloads don't get cheaper</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 04 Dec 2009 11:58:00 EST. A <a href="http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=228684">CVG</a> source (singular) claims that Logitech is developing a UMD drive add-on for the PSP Go. The source has neither price nor release information, merely stating that the "only problem is that it'll make the PSP a little bulky." Logitech's UK office told the outlet that it's unaware of such a device and that it "may be something the US office is working on." We've contacted both Sony and Logitech for more concrete information.<br /> <br /> Beyond the fact that such an add-on would undermine what the Go represents (not quite the "only" problem, is it?), the likely price of such a device, in addition to the base cost of the PSP Go, would not compare well to the already lower cost of a regular PSP with UMD drive. Now, if the add-on could "install" your old games, that would be something ...<br /> <br /> <strong>Update</strong>: Logitech tells Joystiq: "This is not something that our company is working on."<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/02/rumor-logitech-developing-psp-go-umd-add-on/">Logitech denies it's developing PSP Go UMD add-on [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Dec 2009 09:30:00 EST. However, Sony has taken its plans to <em>put this movie on discs</em> a step further, with the surprising announcement that the movie will also be released on UMD. All three versions will be in stores January 26, 2010.<br />
<br />
Both the Blu-Ray and DVD versions will include exclusive bonus material not found on the UMD. Notably <em>absent</em> from the Blu-Ray release is a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/18/hands-on-blu-ray-digital-copy-for-psp/">digital copy</a> of the movie, which would enable it to be watched on <em>any</em> PSP, including the PSP Go. Also notably absent is any mention of the UMD on the <a href="http://www.thisisitmovieondvd.com/">site</a> for the home release. Sony must believe that UMD movies <em>sell themselves</em>.<br />
<br />
<em>Michael Jackson's This Is It</em> will retail for $24.94 on UMD ($28.96 on DVD; $39.95 on Blu-Ray).<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/30/this-is-it-a-movie-being-released-on-umd-in-2010/">This Is It: a movie being released on UMD in 2010</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 30 Nov 2009 18:15:00 EST. If you're looking for a UMD version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/half-minute-hero"><em>Half-Minute Hero</em></a> in Quebec, stop trying. A <a href="http://www.destructoid.com/sorry-canada-no-half-minute-hero-for-you-153396.phtml">Destructoid</a> reader looking for the game was surprised it had skipped a release altogether in the Canadian province -- and it's all thanks to <em>the law</em>. "Canadian distribution is always tricky because of the bilingual law that Quebec enforces, so for titles with limited distribution we do not create a second bilingual version specifically for Canada because it's too expensive. Unfortunately, that's what happened to<em> Half-Minute Hero</em>," an XSEED representative stated.<br />
<br />
Thankfully, digital distribution offers a workaround. PlayStation Network appears to be exempt from Quebec's bilingual laws, so a simple visit to the PlayStation Store is all it takes to bypass the French language police.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/29/half-minute-hero-cant-rescue-quebec/">Half-Minute Hero can't rescue Quebec</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 29 Oct 2009 13:00:00 EST. The historical preservationists at NIS America are attempting to save the increasingly endangered beast known as the "Universal Media Disc." You probably haven't heard of the format -- your parents most assuredly have. Though we currently live in an age of incorporeal digital software, the developer is attempting to re-release its eccentric dungeon dive, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/badman">Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This?</a> </em>in a limited edition UMD format -- provided enough PSP owners show interest in owning a tangible copy of the game.<br /> <br /> If over <a href="http://rosenqueen.com/product.php?productid=16301&amp;cat=0&amp;page=1">1,000 supervillains-in-training pre-order the UMD</a> version of <em>Badman</em> by November 13, NIS will go through with actually producing them, shipping out to their respective buyers in mid-December. Seems like it'll be a tough putt -- but we're sure there's 1,000 fans of both obscure strategy games and tiny, plastic-armored discs tucked away in some pocket in the internet.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/17/nis-america-wants-to-bring-holy-invasion-of-privacy-badman-to/">NIS America wants to bring Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! to UMD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 17 Oct 2009 23:00:00 EST. What do <em>Undead Knights</em>, <em>Naruto Shippuden: Legends: Akatsuki Rising</em>, <em>NBA 2K10</em>, <em>Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes</em> and <em>Cars: Race O Rama</em> have in common? All of these are PSP games released on UMD after the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go'</a>s October 1 launch -- and all are currently without a digital equivalent. Owners of the Go system are unable to play these games because they simply aren't available on the PlayStation Store.<br /><br />Once again, Sony's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/scea-developers-responsible-for-keeping-psp-minis-prices-compet/">hands-off approach</a> to the PlayStation Network means third parties are responsible for getting their content on both UMD and the PlayStation Store. "It's up to individual third parties to decide if and when to publish their UMD releases on PSN. Most, if not all, are on board, as this is a revenue opportunity for them," we were told by Eric Lempel, SCEA's director of PlayStation Network operations. Namco, the one publisher that returned our request for comment, noted specifically that "there are currently no plans to release <em>Akatsuki Rising</em> on PSN right now," despite its October 6 release on UMD.<br /><br />We highly encourage Sony to make simultaneous digital releases of PSP games a requirement for publishers, not merely a suggestion. The company previously issued a mandate for PS3 games to include trophies in 2009 -- a similar policy must be enforced on the PSP. Without it, there's no guarantee that all future PSP games will ever be playable on the PSP Go.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/16/third-parties-not-required-to-release-psp-games-on-playstation-s/">Third parties not required to release PSP games on PlayStation Store</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 09:15:00 EST. In the second part of our interview with SCEA's Eric Lempel, we chatted about the simultaneous release of PSP Go and PSP minis. In addition to discussing the hands-off approach Sony is taking with the pricing of minis, we talked about the possibility of the minis program moving to PS3, and eventual Mac support for the PSP's MediaGo application.<br /><br /><strong>Joystiq: Are any Sony first-party studios working on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-minis">PSP minis</a>?</strong><br /><br /> Eric Lempel: Right now, to my knowledge, they're not. Last Friday, a blog entry at Capcom Unity (<a href="http://www.capcom-unity.com/jgonzo/blog/2009/10/0/updated_psn_umd_legacy_capcom_titles_release_dates">that was mysteriously pulled</a>) revealed the names and dates for a number of "UMD Legacy" titles for re-release on the PlayStation Store:<br />
<ul>
    <li>October 8: <em>Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Dark Tower</em></li>
    <li>October 15: <em>Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max </em></li>
    <li>October 22: <em>Capcom Puzzle World </em></li>
    <li>October 29: <em>Maverick Hunter X </em></li>
    <li>November 5: <em>Megaman Powered Up</em></li>
</ul>
This list completes the lineup of <em>un-</em>UMD'd games <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/01/capcom-reveals-list-of-psp-and-ps1-games-coming-to-psn/">promised</a> three months ago (and tosses in <em>Capcom Puzzle World </em> for good measure). While Capcom has neglected to price any of these titles, previously released Legacy games are currently $19.99 each on the PlayStation Store. Unsure of the veracity of the pulled info, we confirmed with Capcom's Chris Kramer, who told us that the "titles are correct and the dates should be fairly accurate," though he did admit that it's "hard to pin down digital release dates almost until they happen."<br /> <br /> Still unaccounted for? Those PS1 old-timers you've been waiting <em>forever</em> to buy again: <em>Dino Crisis, Resident Evil 2 </em>and <em>Resident Evil 3</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/10/07/capcom-dates-promised-psp-umd-legacy-titles/">Capcom dates promised PSP UMD Legacy titles</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 07 Oct 2009 20:00:00 EST. Okay, so it's pretty clear all of us are going to buy <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/half-minute-hero/"><em>Half-Minute Hero</em></a>. The only questions left are: when? And how? XSEED's bringing the clever micro-RPG game to retail stores on October 13, with a digital PSN release to follow one week later on October 22. "Timing is just off for whatever reason," we were told by a PR representative.<br />
<br />
<em>Half-Minute Hero</em>'s bite-sized gameplay makes it an ideal game to throw on your Memory Stick. But, will gamers have the patience to wait an entire week for the PSN version? By our calculations, you could play <em>Half-Minute Hero</em> over 25,000 times on UMD before the PSN version comes out!<br />

Sony director of hardware marketing John Koller mentioned shortly after the E3 "reveal" of the PSP Go that the company was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/sony-considering-umd-game-trade-in-program-for-psp-go-digital-ve/">considering</a> a "good will program," which would allow UMD owners to trade in their physical games for digital versions. However, yesterday at the Tokyo Game Show, an SCEA spokesperson told <a href="http://kotaku.com/5367207/sony-no-umd-conversion-program-for-pspgo-yet">Kotaku</a>, "We were evaluating a UMD conversion program, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the program at this time."<br /> <br /> That's quite a blow to the base of American PSP owners with large libraries of UMD titles looking to <em>upgrade</em> to a PSP Go -- a blow significantly worsened by the European <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/psp-go-upgrade-incentive-rewards-3-free-games-to-umd-owners/">"PSP Go Rewards"</a> initiative, which grants three free games to PSP Go purchasers who register for the promotion using an older PSP model. This same promotion will <em>not</em> be coming to the US. "SCEA region will not offer a UMD rewards program at this time," due to the fact that the company has a "dual-platform strategy," an SCEA spokesperson has explained to <a href="http://www.industrygamers.com/news/psp-go-not-getting-rewards-program-in-us/">IndustryGamers</a>.<br /> <br /> Ironically enough, we have a "we'd rather not purchase our PSP games again to play them on a new version of your handheld" strategy going for us. It's working out pretty well so far.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/25/sony-america-scraps-umd-to-psp-go-conversion-plans/">Sony America scraps UMD-to-PSP Go conversion plans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 12:21:00 EST. Sony has finally figured out how to incentivize the UMD-less <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a> for those who possess a towering library of tangible titles for the original models of the device. The company recently announced the "<a href="http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=59&amp;thread.id=43296">PSP Go Rewards</a>" program for European territories, which offers three free games to anyone who registers the flip-screened handheld before March 31, 2010. To access these titles, users must first connect their older PSP models (which must have a UMD in the drive) to the PlayStation Network, and activate the promotion.<br /> <br /> The full list of 17 titles, which users can choose their three free games from, is posted after the jump. No, <em>Pocket Pool</em> isn't on there. We know! It's like, <em>what's the point</em>, right? We've contacted Sony to see if the same promotion is coming to North America, and whether this unforgivable oversight will be fixed on its way over.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/psp-go-upgrade-incentive-rewards-3-free-games-to-umd-owners/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSP Go upgrade incentive rewards 3 free games to UMD owners</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/24/psp-go-upgrade-incentive-rewards-3-free-games-to-umd-owners/">PSP Go upgrade incentive rewards 3 free games to UMD owners</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 24 Sep 2009 11:20:00 EST. <div align="left">Given that they're being tailor-made for quick, digital distribution on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a>, Sony's "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-minis">Minis</a>" will probably be released on UMD, the company tells <a href="http://www.develop-online.net/features/607/Sony-on-the-future-of-UMD">Develop</a>. "The most successful Minis titles will probably transition to UMD," SCEE head of developer relations Zeno Colaco said in an interview published today.<br /><br />"I think that a package of multiple Minis games on a single UMD is a real possibility at a later stage, where even a studio or publisher will put a collection of their own games on a single disc," Colaco added. "We'd be open to that."<br /><br />UMD might not be the only destination for Minis. Responding to a question about Minis making the jump to PS3, Colaco said, "I do think there's a possibility that Minis could find themselves on other consoles down the line." <br />SCEA has announced yet another addition to its growing lineup of PSP "Entertainment Pack" bundles. The upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/gran-turismo-psp"><em>Gran Turismo</em></a> pack joins <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/08/rock-band-unplugged-detailed-priced-and-dated/"><em>Rock Band Unplugged</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/04/omg-lilac-psp-sony-says-girlz-play-too/"><em>Hannah Montana</em></a> this October by packaging a "Mystic Silver" PSP-3000 with a UMD copy of <em>Gran Turismo</em>, downloadable white Corvette ZR1, 2GB Memory Stick, and vouchers for movie and music downloads from the PlayStation Store and Sony Music Pass.<br /><br />At $199, the limited edition bundle seems like quite a bargain, especially when you consider how much cheaper it is than a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a>. The announcement of yet another PSP-3000 package reaffirms Sony's stance on supporting <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/16/sonys-john-koller-says-tangible-disc-still-important/">UMD as a format</a> -- but also places into doubt the viability of ending <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/31/sony-and-nintendo-increasing-effort-in-fight-against-piracy/">PSP piracy</a> any time soon.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-portable/">Gran Turismo PSP</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-portable/#2252130"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/3865588147_3b405447b8_b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-portable/#2248820"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/2009-08-17_04-29-00-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-portable/#2248810"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/09/2009-08-17_04-29-00-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-portable/#2179660"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/07/gtportablecoverart_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/gran-turismo-portable/#2056069"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2009/06/1p_02_car_spec_04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/09/02/gran-turismo-psp-bundle-arrives-october-20-for-200/">Gran Turismo PSP bundle arrives October 20 for $200</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 02 Sep 2009 16:14:00 EST. That's about to change, as Tecmo has announced an unexpectedly soon release date for the PSP exclusive: September 29th. Finally, the team is ready to take the wraps off the zombie-infested gameplay -- and it looks markedly improved over our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/08/impressions-undead-knights-psp/">less-than-stellar</a> E3 encounter. We'll be getting our non-rotting hands on a preview build soon, so stay tuned for our updated impressions.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/undead-knights-to-rise-on-psp-this-september/">Undead Knights to rise on PSP this September</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 15:30:00 EST. Why? It was announced over two years ago, in <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/03/14/rockstar-and-timbaland-present-beaterator/">March 2007</a>. Originally <a href="http://beaterator.rockstargames.com/beaterator.html">a Flash application</a> on the Rockstar website, <em>Beaterator</em> allows players of all skill levels to create "professional-level music" through the thousands of loops and sounds included in the application.<br />
<br />
The PSP version of <em>Beaterator</em> is being developed by Rockstar Leeds, the team behind the PSP and DS <em>Grand Theft Auto</em> games. In preparation for the launch of the all-digital PSP Go, Rockstar will be releasing <em>Beaterator</em> on both UMD and PlayStation Network on September 29th in the US and October 2nd in Europe. This is actually the first of <em>two</em> PSP games expected from Rockstar Leeds this year: a PSP version of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/22/grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-breaking-out-on-psp-this-fall/"><em>Chinatown Wars</em></a> is also planned for release this holiday.<br />

Do you remember <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mytran-wars"><em>Mytran Wars</em></a> for the PSP? If you don't, we don't blame you. The PSP-exclusive strategy game had been often-delayed, from 2008 to early 2009. When it didn't make retail release, we assumed it was dead -- but a recent NYC hands-on proved us wrong.<br /><br />Publisher Deep Silver is planning on bringing <em>Mytran Wars</em> on PSP via UMD next month. When grilled about a downloadable release, the publisher couldn't confirm any plans to release the game on PlayStation Network. Our brief hands-on with the game revealed truly impressive production values, with fully-voiced comic book-styled cutscenes that really bring the world to life. The gameplay should be familiar to anyone that's played <em>Advance Wars</em>: it's classic turn-based strategy with fog of war. Unfortunately, the game moved <em>very</em> slowly, with animations taking much too time. Hopefully, the sluggish pace won't prove to be a game-breaker, when it <em>finally</em> launches on PSP next month.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/10/mytran-wars-not-canceled-coming-soon/">Mytran Wars not canceled, coming soon</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Aug 2009 12:30:00 EST. <em>Persona</em>'s September 22nd release is awfully close to the release of the all-digital <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a>. So, what's Atlus to do? Release <em>Persona</em> on UMD and PlayStation Network simultaneously, of course! This will be the first PSP title in America to simultaneously launch in both physical and digital forms. Atlus' dual-format release circumvents Sony's <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/holy-invasion-of-privacy-badman-what-is-nis-doing-to-retail/">earlier policy</a> to disallow PSN/UMD releases until October 1st.<br /><br />While we're entirely supportive of PSN releases, we recommend you buy the retail version if at all possible. Why? Only the retail version will include the <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/06/12/persona-to-include-two-disc-soundtrack-with-every-copy/">bonus two-disc soundtrack</a>; a digital version won't be bundled with the PSN game. Considering both the UMD and retail versions will cost the same at launch, it's a no-brainer as to which version of <em>Persona</em> you should buy.<br /><br />For a full rundown on what's new in <em>Persona</em>, don't forget to check out Atlus' <a href="http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/atlus-provides-video-walkthrough-of-persona-psp/">walkthrough video</a>.<br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/08/05/persona-to-launch-simultaneously-on-psn-and-umd/">Persona to launch simultaneously on PSN and UMD</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 05 Aug 2009 18:19:00 EST. Warner Bros. didn't get the memo about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/umd">UMD</a> and <em>death</em>, apparently, as <a href="http://www.siliconera.com/2009/07/15/harry-potter-temporarily-resurrects-umd-video/">Siliconera</a> reports the studio is set to offer the first five <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/search/?q=harry+potter"><em>Harry Potter</em></a> films in one UMD package. This five-disc UMD bundle is hopping a broomstick and heading to Europe only, and likely won't see a huge run, because, uh, <em>common sense</em>. If you're a collector or have a Region 2 PSP, have at it, but if you've got the standard Region 1 PSP, know that you wouldn't be able to watch these if you bought 'em.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/16/harry-potter-briefly-resurrects-umd-with-new-boxset/">Harry Potter briefly resurrects UMD with new boxset</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 16 Jul 2009 15:15:00 EST. During an interview with <a href="http://www.gamebusiness.jp/article.php?id=51">GameBusiness.jp</a>, Sony's product planning division head honcho, Naoya Matsui, commented that Sony always had plans to go <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/umd">UMD</a>-less, and that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a> is the fruition of all that planning. "We'd planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning," Matsui said. He further makes his case by stating, "But if we'd simply released the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy. We needed to prepare the right environment for it first - things like the transferral [sic] of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as Media Go."<br /><br />Matsui explains that part of the progression of the PSP to the PSP Go is that Sony had to wait until digital content was on par with physical media, and that the timing now is right. That's one of the reasons Sony is still selling <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/26/see-the-psp-3000-and-psp-go-side-by-side/">the existing PSP alongside the Go</a>. Well, that, and it's probably not a good idea to have a single handheld that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/02/sony-bringing-psp-go-october-1-for-249-in-north-america/">costs as much as a Wii</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/sony-umd-free-psp-was-always-planned">Edge</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/02/sony-psp-without-umd-always-the-plan/">Sony: PSP without UMD 'always the plan'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jul 2009 11:45:00 EST. There are multiple reports (on <a href="http://psp.ign.com/articles/997/997405p1.html">IGN</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/Siliconera/status/2299715879">Siliconera</a>) of pre-orders being canceled for NIS America's upcoming PSP game, <em>Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Ever Do to Deserve This?</em>. When we contacted NIS America for comment, the publisher noted that "the game will be coming out," but didn't provide specifics. Today, we can report that <em>Badman</em> will be releasing exclusively as a PlayStation Network download for $19.99. Considering the unique pick up and play nature of <em>Badman</em>, coupled with the upcoming digital-only PSP Go, it makes a lot of sense why <em>Badman</em> will release as a downloadable title.<br /><br />While <em>Badman</em> makes sense as a downloadable title, we're a little surprised that the UMD version had to be canned. NIS America told us that "we wanted to make UMD for it, but Sony doesn't allow dual release (UMD &amp; PSN) until Oct. 1st. We are super bummed about it!" Well, now you know who to blame.<br /><br />Check out gameplay footage of the unusual game after the break.<br /><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/holy-invasion-of-privacy-badman-what-is-nis-doing-to-retail/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! becomes a download-only game</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/24/holy-invasion-of-privacy-badman-what-is-nis-doing-to-retail/">Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! becomes a download-only game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 16:15:00 EST. Sony's John Koller, director of hardware marketing, stated in a recent interview that the company is considering a UMD game trade-in program for <a href="http://joystiq.com/tag/psp-go">PSP Go</a> customers. Speaking with <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5278909/sony-to-offer-new-digital-copies-of-your-old-umd-games">Gizmodo</a>, Koller stated the company plans to unveil a "good will program," allowing customers to link digital copies of their games to their Go.<br /><br />Koller stated that in the past the company has seen a 20-25 percent "trade-up factor" among PSP owners. The company is apparently still in the "planning stages," but we contacted Sony to find out if there were any further details or timetable.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/sony-considering-umd-game-trade-in-program-for-psp-go-digital-ve/">Sony considering UMD game trade-in program for PSP Go digital versions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Jun 2009 20:45:00 EST. It looks like Sony's been thinking of doing a PSP games rental service for quite some time now. A consumer survey we discovered <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/20/psp-survey-hints-at-game-rental-service/">yesterday</a> gauged interest in a PSN-powered games rental service for the PSP. Through the hypothetical service, PSP owners would pay a monthly fee to gain access to a library of new and archived games on the PlayStation Store.<br /><br />According to a report by <a href="http://www.developmag.com/news/31924/Developers-already-briefed-about-PSP-game-rentals">Develop</a>, Sony pitched plans of a rental service to developers at GDC last March. Certainly, a PSN-centric PSP would be far more attractive to developers that have shied away due to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/21/sonys-peter-dille-thinks-psp-piracy-is-sickening/">piracy concerns</a>. Offering a rental service would be yet another nail in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/11/sony-vp-umd-wasnt-brilliant-for-third-parties/">UMD's coffin</a>, and would perhaps incentivize PSP development once again.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/21/developers-told-of-psp-rental-plans-at-gdc/">Report: Developers told of PSP rental plans at GDC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 21 May 2009 12:30:00 EST.
