Realizing that the original Left 4 Dead box art was lacking an obvious pun, Valve has "corrected" the error by mirroring the previously right-handed image to the left. To recap: The box art is a Left hand with 4 fingers left, with the thumb likely bitten off by the reanimated Dead. The pun-to-word ratio is now a remarkable 1:1. L4D will take a bite out of your social life November 18.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Valve hosting Source engine mods beginning next week

Filed under: PC, First Person Shooters

In their most recent weekly news update, Valve announced that starting next week, Steam will begin hosting certain user-created mods of Source engine titles such as Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2. Owners of any Source title will be able to download these mods for free -- what's more, Valve has promised automatic updates and stat tracking for the mods they add to the download service.

The first five mods to be highlighted by Steam are Age of Chivalry, a medieval HL2 mod (pictured above); Synergy, another mod for HL2 which adds a co-op mode to the campaign; D.I.P.R.I.P., a multiplayer vehicular combat game; Zombie Panic, a spiritual precursor to Left 4 Dead; and Insurgency, a "total conversion" mod that takes players out of City 17, and places them on a modern battlefield. Sadly, our Source-based Burgertime mod didn't make the cut. Hopefully Valve will get wise and pick it up with the next batch.

[Via Big Download]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Steam's 50% off weekend on Rockstar titles, many games only $5

Valve's Steam service has a seriously sweet 50% off sale this weekend on its Rockstar games catalog. Both Max Payne titles are only $5 apiece ($7.49 for the set). Also, Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City are $5, while San Andreas is only $10.

Steam is also offering its whole Rockstar collection (10 games in all) for $30. Not every game in there is a classic (lookin' at you, Manhunt), but the price is certainly right for all the hours worth of gameplay in the package.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Valve blames 'bandwidth' for lack of PS3 support

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Business

"We don't have the bandwidth." That's the explanation Valve co-founder Gabe Newell offered up when poked by 1UP for answers regarding the company's lack of PlayStation 3 support. Put another way: "We don't have PlayStation developers," marketing director Doug Lombardi explained. While hardly a new revelation, Valve's dilemma continues to prevent the company from creating in-house PS3 content.

In the short term, this means -- for the last time -- no Left 4 Dead on PS3, and also, no Team Fortress 2 updates. But...? Uh-uh. "They're not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3." They, of course, is EA, developer of the PS3 version of The Orange Box. Crysis and Crysis Warhead are now both available on Valve's Steam digital distribution service for $40 and $30, respectively. Warhead will be available tomorrow outside North America.

Of course, Crysis is now the stuff of PC legend for being "that game," which will take your two-year-old PC and teach it the meaning of pain. Crysis Warhead is its "less demanding" little brother who just wants to play. There's nothing in the way of official confirmation at the moment, but tech website The Inquirer reports that "well-placed sources" are telling it that Google will be purchasing Valve "any second now." As the site points out, Google is likely less motivated by Valve's game development than its nigh-ubiquitous content distribution platform, Steam.

We, again, have no idea if this is on the money, but there have been a couple of indicators that lend a sort of credence. You may remember early last month when Valve said it was happy to talk about acquisitions, and just a little over a week ago Forbes' Chris Morris posited that Google could be going into game publishing.

We'll keep you posted.

Update: Valve tells MTV that the story is a "complete fabrication."

[Thanks, Stephen]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Valve's Newell confirms Left 4 Dead demo

Filed under: PC, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Online

Fear not, 1% of the world that isn't convinced fighting hordes of zombies with three gun-toting friends is totally awesome. Valve managing director Gabe Newell has confirmed with VideoGamer that a Left 4 Dead demo is coming. The demo, for both Xbox 360 and PC, will include single-player and online co-op options to try out. Said Newell, "I don't know what the date is for release on that, though. I think it's going to contain the first part of one of the campaigns. I think it'll probably be [the] Hospital [level] but I'm not sure." We've contacted Valve hoping for more information. Left 4 Dead is coming for you November 18.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Combine Interview puts Tom Cruise in new light

Filed under: Culture, PC, First Person Shooters, Video

Actually, we've just had our second viewing of "The Combine Interview," which re-imagines Cruise's Scientology diatribe as a scary statement of purpose from an anonymous member of the Combine. And now, we think it puts the Combine in a new light, as the one force on earth capable of taming Maverick himself (Kelly McGillis notwithstanding).

Rather than crank out another Tom Cruise gag (we've got plenty of them, we assure you) we'll opt to mention how well-made and creepy the short film actually is, and how Valve should really already have Tom Hall on the payroll. An immediate sense of tension washes over you when you realize a swarm of Olympic Dash worthy zombies are soon headed your way. Picking up the controller for Left 4 Dead -- the first time it's been playable for the Xbox 360 -- was as exciting as you'd expect it to be. Having never played the game before I quickly remembered all the praise lobbed at it from other writers within the network from other industry events. This experience however was extra special as two of my team members were fellow Joystiq writers Jem Alexander and Dustin Burg. How did the Xbox 360 version feel with a team of people I'd actually play with when it ships later this year? Jump in to find out more.

Gallery: Left 4 Dead

Starting off each level your squad of four survivors are barricaded in a safe room with a stockpile of weapons, ammunition and health packs. Once your team has secured enough inventory for your Point-A to Point-B onslaught the safe room door is manually opened and you, for the lack of a better term, run like hell. The game acts as you've heard it should, as you progress throughout a level zombies attack in groups from all angles. First your garden variety 28 Days Later-esque fast zombies and later by enemies with special abilities. Sticking together is key and in the beginning three of us were never beyond steps of the other, while our fourth felt the game was tracking completion time on an online leaderboard and disappeared into the eerie night.

Ironically our fourth survived the longest as the swarms of enemies focused their attack on the Joystiq trio. Left 4 Dead's biggest draw is the absolute importance of team play which is both based on the AI Director and in forced encounters. The AI Director is a known feature but to quickly recap, the better you perform as a team the more intense the game becomes. Forced encounters are situations that a player gets in where they are unable to help themselves and require team assistance. If a group of zombies circle you and close in, you'll need to call out for help to your team who can quickly spot your character's aura change from a relaxed state (blue) to an engaged state (red). Some encounters require a teammate to save you from being pinned down or captured by aggressive enemies and being left alone in these instances means death.

Once you're ... err... dead in Left 4 Dead, and you will die, your teammates are able to respawn you into the fray by opening a nearby closet where your character's aura can be spotted banging on the door for help. It's an element that sounds like nothing at first but the concept of bringing you back, trapped in a room, again adds to the cooperative experience. In any given level you are able to respawn a limited number of times without using health packs. Your final "life" changes the game colors to black-and-white while slowing your character's speed down substantially as a in-game nudge reminding you to seek help immediately.

Those wary of console controls for such a twitch shooter will rest easy when they finally get their hands on Left 4 Dead. The default settings are reminiscent of other console shooters where the right trigger fires and the face buttons control reload, jumping and action functions and the directional pad is mapped to specific inventory items like bombs, health and your flashlight. A bumper button is also mapped for quick turns which spins your character 180-degrees on a dime to engage enemies attacking from behind.

Our first round ended rather quickly as our female companion, the one who went for an Olympic Time Trail record in the level, literally leaving us for dead. Once we died he was quickly finished off. Our second attempt was more noteworthy as our team stuck together as a brutal zombie killing unit. In the end only two, myself and Dustin Burg, made it the the next level which is signified by entering and closing the door of a safe room.

It was intense, exciting and fun. Zombies were killed and laughs were had. This is what all co-op experiences should be, working together rather than being in the same game. Left 4 Dead is hitting this November and we're already working on our Zombie Apocalypse Plan in preparation.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Left 4 Dead: Delayed 2 November 20

Filed under: PC, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Online

Valve's four-player fix of zippy-fast zombie action has been pushed back a bit, but thankfully not 28 days later; just 16. Left 4 Dead had been slated to hit PC and Xbox 360 on November 4, but its evil will instead take up residence on your platform of choice November 20. The date is significant in that it's the 10th anniversary of another Valve game you may have heard about - the original Half-Life.

If you just can't stand a first week of November devoid of something new to play, fear not. Might we suggest: Fallout 3 (Oct. 28) or a little game called Gears of War 2 (Nov. 7).

[Via Shacknews]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Xbox 360 TF2 getting yummy sandvich by year's end

Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, Action, Online

Bright lights bounce off the windowed walls of your 4 foot by 5 foot holding cell, making them twice as bright. As you rise from your bed and adjust your eyes a timer clicks from beyond your transparent walls and immediately you can't help but to fear you've seen this all before.

Portal: Still Alive is the upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title based on the critically acclaimed original found in The Orange Box from Valve. Those who were unfortunate enough to never play the original Portal are in luck as Portal: Still Alive is essentially the exact same experience but with a few added bonuses.
"With Portal: Still Alive, you're getting the original game that comes in The Orange Box," an Xbox representative told us. Experienced players need not worry, however, as Portal: Still Alive will sport, "a host of new levels and new achievements." As recently confirmed by Doug Lombardi, some of the new levels included are the maps found in Portal: The Flash Version map pack, currently available for free on the PC.

Explaining how Portal: Still Alive feels is harder than you'd imagine it would be. It would be easy to say it felt like Portal -- since it is exactly that -- but one key element was missing from our hands-on time: the sound. Forget the enigmatic pops and buzzing noises emitted from turrets, the metallic bounce of energy orbs or the whizzing noise of a freshly summoned portal; removing the sound made us realize how important the dialog was to Portal's success. While sounds will be included in the final build of the game (breaking news!) the noisy atmosphere helped to confirm one of our lingering fears: with no new audio from fan favorite GLaDOS for the bonus levels, Portal: Still Alive feels lifeless.

If your wish for Portal: Still Alive is extra challenges with a disregard for story, then this Arcade release is exactly what you want (and it controls as well as it ever has with an Xbox 360 controller). However, if you're not okay with the lack of any story elements, Still Alive may have you worried that the Portal train is making an unnecessary stop on Microsoft's Arcade.

Portal: Still Alive is slated to release exclusively on the Xbox Live Arcade by the end of the year.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Team Fortress 2: Meet The Sandvich

Filed under: Culture, PC, Action, Online
Meet Team Fortress 2's "Edible Device" and shotgun replacement, the Sandvich.

Valve really missed a good opportunity for a bad pun here by not calling it "Meat the Sandvich," but hey, it's still pretty damned funny. Not unlike the unfortunate victims and eventual accomplices in a zombie apocalypse, Valve's Left 4 Dead will soon be spreading across the world, exposing itself to clamoring crowds of pale-skinned, physically sluggish moaners. The cooperative shooter will be hosted in playable form at several upcoming gaming events, giving folks like you the chance to experience what we've been raving about. Here's where you can give the game a good go:

Leipzig Games Convention (Germany, 20-24 August)

Penny Arcade Expo (Seattle, USA, August 29-31) -- Xbox 360 version debut

PC Gamer Showdown (UK, 27-28 September)

As if mowing down hordes of zombies on your way to the Left 4 Dead booth wasn't incentive enough to go play, Valve has promised that its people will be nearby to dispense information and game "memorabilia." Very nice! All we got at E3 were some mints.

[Via press release]

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Got some cash? Just like your favorite indie band - those guys that issued a giant middle finger to The Man and made it their own way, retaining credibility the way a sponge retains water - Valve isn't averse to an acquisition. Whoa, whoa, whoa! Before you tear down your Gabe Newell poster or throw away your Robin Walker découpaged Trapper Keeper, hear 'em out: Valve's veep of marketing Doug Lombardi simply said, "anything is possible" and that he'd be "happy" to discuss an acquisition of the hugely successful independent developer. He's not talking about "selling out" ... like that band ...

Valve's always done plenty in-house, but partnerships with Sierra and now EA Partners have provided the dev with significant marketing and distribution resources that it would rather not take on. Speaking of EA, Lombardi relayed some details behind Valve's decision to partner with the Big Bad Publisher, concluding, "We haven't seen the boogeyman." It's clear both Valve and EA have eyes for each other and, with recently acquired devs like BioWare and Pandemic calling their relationship with the publisher "mutually beneficial," it wouldn't surprise us if EA took Lombardi up on his offer to talk.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Left 4 Dead on PS3? 4geddaboudit ... 4 now

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Action

Despite what OPM says, Valve's zombocalypse game Left 4 Dead is not coming to PS3, according to Valve. IGN spoke with Doug Lombardi, information guru at the house of Newell, who informed the site there is no PS3 version of the game "currently in production."

Not so fast, OPM could still be on the ball. Lombardi may be speaking specifically on behalf of Valve -- which is all he can really speak for -- and perhaps EA is developing a PS3 version separately. That worked out really well when EA did the same for Orange Box on PS3, didn't it?

Gallery: Left 4 Dead

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Next TF2 update may feature 'new type of environment'

Filed under: PC, First Person Shooters, Online

Yes, we're still playing Valve's classy, cartoonish shooter, Team Fortress 2. We'll continue to do so for as long as the game keeps receiving updates -- and there's at least one more on the way. Posting on the official Team Fortress 2 blog, Valve's Jakob Jungels has suggested that our multiplayer mileu may be due for a makeover.

"One of the things we're looking at for the next update is the creation of a new type of environment for our levels to be built in," he wrote. "We're pretty happy with the way our environments have turned out so far, but as we create more and more maps with these achievement packs, we want our level designers to have more to work with in terms of giving their settings a unique look."

Jungels notes that before making it into the game, each potential environment has to satisfy a list of requirements. Does it allow for new gameplay? Does it support existing gameplay types? Is it completely awesome? We anxiously await a chorus of yeses.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

OPM: EA developing Left 4 Dead for PS3

Filed under: Sony PlayStation 3, Action

It's no secret that Valve's Gabe Newell isn't a staunch supporter of the PlayStation 3 -- well, that's putting it lightly. The Half-Life creator actually referred to the system as "a waste of everyone's time". PS3 owners were likely disappointed (though not surprised) to learn that Turtle Rock Studios' (a recent addition to the Valve family) upcoming zombocalypse survival sim Left 4 Dead would be console exclusive to the Xbox 360 -- though a recent blurb in the latest issue of Official Playstation Magazine contradicts this oft-repeated claim.

The one-sentence newsbrief reads, "Valve's survival horror game Left 4 Dead is coming to PS3, but EA will be taking on development duties in-house." That's it -- no attribution for the report or timetable for the title's release. We expect that EA will soon deliver more info about the project -- until then, we wait with bated breath, hoping that we don't have another Orange Box fiasco on our hands.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Valve committed to XBLA, re-releases possible

Filed under: PC, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business

With excitement still brewing for the upcoming GlaDOS-free follow up to Portal, developer Valve has come forward, throwing its considerable weight behind Xbox Live Arcade while adding that the company is 'considering' bringing other titles from its catalog to the service as well. Says Valve's Doug Lombardi, "We'll certainly consider it. If you look at what we've done on Steam, we try to make all our games available and we're always reviewing the prices to keep them current. We'd love to do that, but Portal: Still Alive is our first step at doing that beyond the PC."

While Lombardi adds that the studio currently has no "immediate plans" to test the waters of either the Wii or PlayStation 3, this remains great news for owners of Microsoft's console, possibly giving those who missed Valve's boat the first time around a second chance to climb on board.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Show of hands: Left 4 Dead box art gets a thumbs off

Filed under: PC, Microsoft Xbox 360, First Person Shooters, Online
