Well, we just watched the last ten minutes of The Rundown, which means -- what else? -- we're watching Spike TV. That means two things: The VGAs are about to come on, and Sean William Scott just cut off a little piece of our soul, and devoured it wholesale.<br />
<br />
Ladies and gentlemen: The Spike 2011 VGAs. Let's do this thing.<br />
<br />
Oh God.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/liveblogging-the-spike-2011-video-game-awards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Liveblogging the Spike 2011 Video Game Awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/12/10/liveblogging-the-spike-2011-video-game-awards/">Liveblogging the Spike 2011 Video Game Awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 10 Dec 2011 21:09:00 EST. Spike TV's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vga-2009">Video Game Awards</a> show isn't simply about celebrating the best of the games industry. No, it plays host to numerous <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/spike-vga-2009-wrap-up-the-awards-the-trailers-the-premieres/"><em>WORLD EXCLUSIVE</em> trailers</a>. But, just how many people tuned in to watch? According to a report by Variety's <a href="http://weblogs.variety.com/the_cut_scene/2010/01/so-how-did-the-vgas-do-in-the-ratings.html">The Cut Scene</a>, not too many: Roughly 647,000 viewers watched the broadcast in 2009, a 5-percent decrease from 2008's viewership, and a 30-percent decrease from 2007's. When accounting for DVR views, the total jumps to 691,000 viewers. (For comparison's sake, the most recent <a href="http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jan/19/na-golden-globes-ratings-increase/">Golden Globe awards</a> drew in 16.9 million viewers.)<br />
<br />
The online numbers (via GameTrailers.com) should make it pretty clear what Spike TV is doing right -- and what it's doing <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/liveblogging-the-2009-spike-video-game-awards/">wrong</a>. The scene pictured above, featuring Mike Tyson and the cast of <em>The Jersey Shore</em>, got a paltry <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/cast-of-spike-tv/59958">16,000 views</a>. The <em>Halo: Reach</em> trailer, on the other hand, got <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/spike-vga-halo-reach/59813"><em>584,000</em></a>. Perhaps if the Video Game Awards focused on, y'know, <em>video games</em>, there would be more reason to stay tuned in.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/01/25/vga-2009-viewership-down-5-from-2008/">VGA 2009 viewership down 5% from 2008</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 25 Jan 2010 16:30:00 EST. As you can probably tell by looking at our front page, last night's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/spike-vga-2009">Spike Video Game Awards</a> show was a pretty prolific source of gaming news. From the big reveals of games like <em>Batman: Arkham Asylum 2</em> and <em>Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2</em>, to new trailers for <em>Crackdown 2</em> and <em>Halo: Reach</em>, to ... well, the actual awards, it was a pretty busy night for all parties involved.<br />
<br />
We've collected all the stories, trailers, and winners of each award in this post to prevent you from hunting through our archives -- or our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/liveblogging-the-2009-spike-video-game-awards/">hateful, hateful liveblog</a> -- to find what you're looking for. Oh, you've never heard of the television show known as <a href="http://www.spike.com/show/31082"><em>Deadliest Warrior</em></a>? We'll break it down for you: Each episode pits two different types of warriors from different time periods against each other to see who would win in various forms of combat. For instance, one episode might show the results of a <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Tk3SlgPxo&amp;feature=fvw">Ninjas vs. Spartans throwdown</a>. One might show how a conflict between Marines and Medieval Knights would resolve itself. Robots vs. Wizards? A bit less likely, but still within the realm of possibilities.<br />
<br />
The VGAs brought great news involving this series -- Pipeworks Software is making a downloadable video game based on it. The announcement was accompanied by a lava-hot trailer showing a battle between a ninja and a heavily armored knight, which we've posted after the jump.<br />
<br />
What? Who wins? The ninja does. <em>Of course</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/deadliest-warrior-video-game-announced-during-vgas/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Deadliest Warrior video game announced during VGAs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/13/deadliest-warrior-video-game-announced-during-vgas/">Deadliest Warrior video game announced during VGAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 13 Dec 2009 10:30:00 EST. Yeah, well, it was <em>totally</em> for another installment in the <em>True Crime</em> series, which is being developed by <em>ModNation Racers</em> creators United Front. Guess there's no more mystery as to what <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/14/activision-enlists-united-front-games-for-new-action-property/">Activision's upcoming Hong Kong-set action title</a> is, huh?<br />
<br />
It'll be a little while before we can get the high definition version of the trailer up, but until then, check out <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAJ4u_HFE0w">a screengrabbed version</a> of the trailer after the jump, and feel confident in the fact that we're <em>very good guessers</em>.<br />

We've been hurt <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/09/liveblogging-the-2007-video-game-awards/"><em>so many times</em></a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/liveblogging-the-2008-video-game-awards">in the past</a>, but we're holding out hope for this year's <a href="http://www.spike.com/event/vga2009?sicontent=0&amp;sicreative=4366518435&amp;siclientid=2389&amp;sitrackingid=118899469&amp;refsite=7190&amp;cmpnid=865&amp;pt=pr&amp;lkdes=NET_spike">Spike Video Game Awards</a>. As is our custom, we'll put our hearts out on the line in order to liveblog the show for you, dear readers -- an exercise that will likely result in unrelenting anguish after the first ex-Mad TV cast member starts making the obligatory drug-or-fart-related jokes.<br />

Join us at 8PM for the festivities. Unfortunately, Justin won't be fulfilling his usual role as MC, but we'll have more than enough Joystiqers on hand to make up for his absent humor. Also, we'll be doing shots anytime someone utters the words "World Exclusive." We expect things to get <em>really</em> weird, <em>really</em> fast.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/12/12/reminder-tune-in-for-joystiqs-vga-liveblog-tonight-at-8-est/">Reminder: Tune in for Joystiq's VGA liveblog tonight at 8 EST</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 12 Dec 2009 14:30:00 EST. Speculation surrounding a new Star Wars game, which is set to be uncloaked at this weekend's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/new-star-wars-game-debuting-during-spike-video-game-awards/">Spike Video Game Awards</a>, has now grown to include a database entry from Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification. "<a href="http://www.oflc.gov.au/www/cob/find.nsf/5b6ebdff7f5b9a24ca2575ca00062226/61087c671a0894bdca257671007af40a!OpenDocument">Star Wars Legends</a>" seems to have slipped by undetected when it was classified back in June of this year, though it's unclear if the listing was withheld from public view until more recently. According to the online entry, <em>Legends</em> is being produced by LucasArts and published by Activision Blizzard. <br />
<br />
<em>Star Wars Legends</em> was first spotted in a <a href="http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&amp;entry=77514518">trademark filing</a> in July 2008, when LucasArts claimed the title for use as "computer game software" and "entertainment service provided online." <br />
<br />
Also: Many tired Star Wars references died to bring you this information etc.<br />

Shrugging off years of mediocrity and partially descriptive subtitles, EA's newly announced <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/medal-of-honor"><em>Medal of Honor</em></a> reboot will thrust players into a modern milieu: Afghanistan. Set for release in 2010 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the new first-person shooter follows the Tier 1 Operator, described as "a relatively unknown entity directly under the National Command Authority who takes on missions no one else can handle," and <em>not</em> described as an oddly militant member of ZZ Top. EA claims that "Tier 1 Operators from the US Special Operations Community" have been involved since the earliest stages of the game's development. <br />
<br />
The publisher seems intent on throwing the gauntlet down in the modern war arena (do they still use gauntlets?), promising a "best-in-class single-player campaign" from the minds at EA Los Angeles, as well as a multiplayer component developed by the <em>Battlefield</em> veterans at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/dice">DICE</a>. <br />
<br />
You can bear witness to the game's full unveiling during Spike TV's 2009 Video Game Awards on Saturday, December 12 at 8:00PM PT. You can witness beard in the gallery below.<br />

Well, <em>crap</em>. Now we have a reason to watch the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Spike-VGA-2009">Spike Video Game Awards</a>. See, while we can live without the <strong>WORLD EXCLUSIVE</strong> trailers for next year's big releases, we don't think we can skip out on the unveiling of a new <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/star-wars"><em>Star Wars</em></a> game in good conscience.<br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://www.gametrailers.com/video/star-wars-spike-tv/59426">the latest teaser</a>, viewers of the 2009 Spike VGAs will be able to find out "what's next" for the <em>Star Wars</em> gaming franchise. We've got our fingers triple-crossed for a new <em>Jedi Outcast</em> entry, but have also prepared our hearts for the icy embrace of <em>Super Bombad Racing 2</em>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/new-star-wars-game-debuting-during-spike-video-game-awards/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>New Star Wars game debuting during Spike Video Game Awards</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/25/new-star-wars-game-debuting-during-spike-video-game-awards/">New Star Wars game debuting during Spike Video Game Awards</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 Nov 2009 14:20:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.spike.com/event/vga2009/">2009 crop of nominees</a> in Spike's Video Game Awards is out, and we've got a big announcement to make. We're not going to make fun of them. For starters, most of the categories seem pretty on point, with <font size="3" face="Helvetica" style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-size: 12px;">eight noms for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/uncharted-2"><em>Uncharted 2</em></a>, seven for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/batman-arkham-asylum"><em>Batman: Arkham Asylum</em></a>, and six for both <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/modern-warfare-2"><em>Modern Warfare 2</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/left-4-dead-2"><em>Left 4 Dead 2</em></a>, which all seem pretty deserving.<br />
</font><br />
Furthermore, we don't want to rob you commenters of the fun of individually savaging the few embarrassing sections of the list, which honestly, make their own comedy gravy.<br />
<br />
Stymied? Okay, we'll get you started, but <em>just this one,</em> cool? <em>Borderlands </em>is up for Best RPG, huh? That's the best pick since <em>Serious Sam</em> won for "Best Dating/Train Conducting Sim."<br />
<br />
We're assuming you can take it from there.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/18/vga-2009-nominees-revealed/">VGA 2009 nominees revealed, Uncharted 2 head of the pack</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 13:14:00 EST. It's a bit controversial to say the least, but then again, it is the Spike VGAs. Right?</div>

There were plenty of stellar Wii games to release this year, but, as far as the last night's Spike VGAs goes, you should look to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/boom-blox"><em>Boom Blox</em></a> as this year's best Wii game. The game certainly deserves the recognition (and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/30/boom-blox-sales-stack-up/">sales figures</a>), but we're not sure we'd go and say it is the Wii game of the year. <div align="left">With all the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/rumor-gears-2-combustible-dlc-releases-soon/">excitement</a> surrounding tonight's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/reminder-spike-vgas-air-tonight-debut-of-gears-2-gtaiv-and-mo/">Spike TV Video Game Awards</a>, we know you'll be a good fanboy and watch the show either on TV or via the award show's <a href="http://www.spike.com/event/vga/page/live-camera">live stream</a>. And instead of watching all by your lonesome, we recommend jumping over to <a href="http://majornelson.com/Chat.aspx">Major Nelson's site</a> and joining the live chat event.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />The VGA live chat (accessible <a href="http://majornelson.com/Chat.aspx">here</a> or through your favorite IRC client) will promptly kick off at 9:00PM eastern over on MajorNelson.com. You'll be among your community peers which means you can discuss, speculate and express your fanboyism while watching the VGA news unfold. We'll be hanging out in the chat session and we've also learned that Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb will be stopping by sometime during the VGA airing. It's socialization, it's awards, and it's just fun.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/be-social-join-major-nelsons-vga-live-chat-event/">Be social, join Major Nelson's VGA live chat event</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 19:30:00 EST. Oops? The rehearsal footage supposedly showed new Combustible Map Pack DLC for <em>Gears 2</em> that's set to release in early Monday morning. No other details were revealed, but we have a hunch we'll be seeing an <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/17/possible-gears-2-imulsion-map-dlc-pics-surface/">Imulsion map</a> among the mix. Seeing that the live feed is no longer active (or crippled under the bandwith strain), we can't verify the DLC announcement or its release, so keep your eyes glued to Spike TV tonight at 9PM eastern.<br /><br /><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/14/rumor-gears-2-combustible-dlc-releases-soon/">Rumor: Gears 2 Combustible DLC releases soon!</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 14 Dec 2008 18:31:00 EST. <div align="left">Spike TV must be on a television ratings mission, because they not only have secured <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/brutal-legend-gameplay-debuts-at-2008-vgas-jack-black-to-host/">a few</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/21/fight-night-round-4-debuts-at-2008-vgas/">game debuts</a> for their VGA award show, but we're told that <em>Grand Theft Auto IV'</em>s <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lost-and-damned"><em>Lost and Damned</em></a> episodic content will premier at the award show as well.<br /></div>
</div>
<br />The press release doesn't tell us much more than that, so we're not exactly sure what or how much <em>Lost and Damned</em> will be shown. Then again, it doesn't really matter, because our interest is piqued and we'll be tuning in on <strong>December 14th at 9:00PM eastern</strong>.<br /><br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/gta-iv-the-lost-and-damned-to-premier-at-spike-vgas/">Joystiq</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/05/gtaiv-lost-and-damned-to-debut-at-spike-vgas/">GTAIV 'Lost and Damned' to debut at Spike VGAs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 05 Dec 2008 15:00:00 EST. Spike TV's <a href="http://www.spike.com/blog/2008-video-game/70647">2008 Video Game Awards</a> will be kicking off next month and the nominees and categories have all been set in place. Both PSP-exclusive titles <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/chains-of-olympus"><em>God of War: Chains of Olympus</em></a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/patapon"><em>Patapon</em></a> have been nominated for Best Handheld Game. Unfortunately, that's all these two have been nominated for. There can only be one winner and it's going to be a tough call between these two -- oh, yes, and the other nominees, of course. The PS3, on the other hand, has a huge amount of nominations -- so check out what's happening on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/vga-08-the-playstation-exclusive-nominees-are/">PS3 Fanboy</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/11/13/vga-08-god-of-war-patapon-nominated-for-best-handheld-game/">VGA 08: God of War, Patapon nominated for Best Handheld Game</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Nov 2008 15:25:00 EST. What's VGA, you ask? No, it's not <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/09/liveblogging-the-2007-video-game-awards/">Spike's Video Game Awards</a>. It's the Video Game Authority, a group that <a href="http://www.gamesniped.com/2008/04/09/first-vga-graded-games-hit-ebay/">issues grades based on the condition of old video games</a>, in a manner similar to action figures and trading cards. After paying a fee, gamers send in their beloved collectibles, which are graded and sealed in tamper-evident acrylic cases, marked with the official hologram of the organization. The first of these VGA-graded items are <a href="http://stores.ebay.com/BigHedToyz_VIDEO-GAMES_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ12QQftidZ2QQtZkm">currently up for auction on eBay</a>.<br /><br />Currently available are near-mint copies of <em>Super Mario Bros. 3</em>, <em>Final Fantasy</em>, <em>Metal Gear</em> and others, all in the 75-85 grade range. <em>Final Fantasy</em> is notably already up over $200, and <em>Super Mario Bros. 3</em> isn't far behind. If nothing else, those NES games look damn sexy in those plastic cases. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.gamesniped.com/2008/04/09/first-vga-graded-games-hit-ebay/">Read</a> - First VGA Graded Games Hit eBay [GameSniped]<br /><a href="http://stores.ebay.com/BigHedToyz_VIDEO-GAMES_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ12QQftidZ2QQtZkm">Read</a> - BigHedToyz [eBay]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2008/04/10/first-vga-graded-games-up-for-auction/">First VGA-graded games up for auction</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 Apr 2008 14:57:00 EST. <div align="left">If you somehow missed Spike's Video Game Awards ... er, let's try that again. If you somehow watched <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/vga">Spike's Video Game Awards</a>, then you no doubt saw Nathan Sharratt's impressive home-made Big Daddy costume. He was actually invited to the event by 2K Boston after his <em>BioShock</em> homage Halloween costume pictures got significant attention from these here intertubes. Anyway, Sharratt is <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&amp;rd=1&amp;item=180193855620&amp;ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT&amp;ih=008">selling his Big Daddy costume</a> on eBay, may the capitalism commence!<br /><br />The bidding began at $999 and is how much the costume cost to make according to Sharratt. He says he's getting rid of Big Daddy because his apartment is the "size of a shoe box" and hopes someone out there will give the costume a "good, loving, nerdy home." We're kinda wondering why 2K Boston doesn't just buy the thing. The only thing missing from the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/08/21/bioshock-launch-party-at-bostons-felt-bar/"><em>BioShock</em> launch party</a> was a Big Daddy walking around. This way they'll have a costume all set for the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/09/10/bioshock-franchise-ships-1-5m-units-l-a-noire-bumped-from-fi/"><em>BioShock 2</em></a> launch party (assuming the game takes place in Rapture).<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Opening bid price was lowered to $799 this morning.<br /></div>

A television channel aimed at men, young males and is chalk full of action, sex and violence. What a perfect channel to host a video game awards show.<br /><br />Last night's annual <a href="http://www.ifilm.com/show/23733">Spike Video Game Awards</a> wrapped up last night with the glitz and glam of a State Fair complete with corn dogs and funnel cakes. Samuel L. Jackson took hosting duties and in between the music and random celebrity appearances they (somehow) found the time to hand out a few video game awards. Among the evening's <a href="http://www.xboxic.com/news/4098">winners</a> were <em>BioShock</em> who took home three awards including Game of the Year and Best Xbox 360 Game, <em>Halo 3</em> which won for Best Multiplayer Game and <em>Rock Band</em> was honored with the Best Soundtrack ... beating out <em>Guitar Hero III</em>. Full list of winners, nominees and thus losers is posted after the break and feel free to completely disagree with Spike's VGAs. We raise an eyebrow to a few of 'em.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/recap-spikes-vga-winners-and-losers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Recap: Spike's VGA winners and losers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/recap-spikes-vga-winners-and-losers/">Recap: Spike's VGA winners and losers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:45:00 EST. We didn't know too much about it, except it was a slightly different take on the sandbox style of gameplay we've come to know through titles like <em>Grand Theft Auto</em>. Now we finally get a glimpse of what's to come and it looks fairly cinematic. However, we'll reserve any further judgment until we get some good gameplay footage. Enjoy!<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/12/10/prototype-trailer-unleashed-upon-the-masses/">Prototype trailer unleashed upon the masses</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 10 Dec 2007 11:00:00 EST. For the third year in a row Samuel L. Jackson will host the Spike TV Video Game Awards, now in its fifth year. While we'd like to say Jackson can bring "the awesome" to most anything, it's all too evident when non-gamers pick up that gamepad (note to Spike: keep the pad out of his hands).<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/news/samuel-l-jackson-hosting-the-2007-video-game-awards/18688">event</a> goes down Dec. 7 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and, after some fancy editing, the actual broadcast is Dec. 9 at 9PM. Games like <em>Borderlands</em> and <em>Gran Turismo 5 Prologue</em> will be premiered during the show and <em>totally radical</em> (not to mention relevant) celebs like magician Criss Angel and Dave Navarro will attend. Check out <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/09/nominees-for-spike-tvs-video-game-awards-2007-revealed/">the full list</a> of categories and nominees.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/11/29/samuel-l-jackson-hosting-spike-tv-video-game-awards-again/">Samuel L. Included in the Spring dashboard update is a <a href="http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=7216">reference levels setting</a> under the displays option, which toggles your interpret black levels to help get those blacks even blacker. The VGA's washed out effect is due to both the VGA cable and HDTV's default black levels not meshing, so the new reference levels setting gives you three options (standard, intermediate, and expanded) to correct the difference. Any VGA users willing to give the reference levels a test and see if it makes your display's picture prettier?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Xbox_360_Spring_Update_Improves_VGA_Image_Quality">Digg</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/10/update-brings-better-vga-picture/">Update brings better VGA picture</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 10 May 2007 13:00:00 EST. Gamers playing on non-widescreen monitors have experienced squashed aspect ratios since the game shipped. A patch will be included in the next <em>Gears </em>update, which has yet to be scheduled. Rein added that Epic is still working on <a target="_blank" href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/27/gears-of-war-enhancements-planned-trilogy-unconfirmed/">additional features</a> for the update.<br /><br />Epic's vice president also made a direct apology to fans for the VGA oversight, explaining that the development team was only using widescreen monitors. A non-widescreen monitor has since been acquired for testing purposes.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/30/gears-of-war-vga-bug-fixed-set-aside-for-future-update/">Gears of War VGA bug fixed, set aside for future update</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 15:55:00 EST. For all of Sony's technological one-upmanship, Microsoft had deftly removed one of the PlayStation 3's brightest tail-feathers in a single software download. Well, at least it seemed that way until a little over a month later when the update was available and Microsoft's implementation left <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/08/fix-for-360s-1080p-troubles-is-being-worked-on/">a lot to be desired</a>. Of course, they promised a patch to correct some issues in the update, notably the incompatibility of 1080p-over-component on televisions that supported the format. That second patch has finally arrived and, as promised, solves some of those issues. For example, the above image shows a Sony XBR3 television finally displaying 1080p content over component. So, for those users who only needed that fixed, you're on your way.<br /><br />Still, despite the update's promise of "improved support for HD video output over VGA, including 1080p resolution" this blogger still encounters a significant (and certainly abnormal) amount of screen tearing while using the VGA connection, not to mention the pale, washed-out colors that have become emblematic of the 360's VGA implementation. But we're not the only ones with problems. A quick perusal of the <a href="http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=759918">AVS Forums thread</a> shows some another anomalies that don't instill much confidence in Microsoft's upgraded upgrade. <br /><br />We have a feeling that Microsoft will continue to tweak this feature until it works as expected; however, after two attempts we're left underwhelmed and Microsoft's magic hat trick is looking more and more like smoke and mirrors.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/30/dashboard-update-aka-the-1080p-fix.aspx">Read</a> -- Major Nelson's Dashboard update announcement<br /><a href="http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=759918">Read</a> -- AVS Forums on "improved" 1080p support<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/30/microsofts-updated-1080p-update-still-needs-work/">Microsoft's updated 1080p update still needs work</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 30 Nov 2006 13:58:00 EST. And those are two great tastes that taste great together; Engadget shows how to make an Xbox 360 VGA cable out of a lowly composite part.<br /><br />Unlike the PS2 and GameCube, the Xbox 360 cables include every pin -- even the ones not used by the cable-specific video connection. Because these pins already connect to the console, it's just a matter of wiring a VGA socket to the previously-unused terminals.<br /><br />Total cost? $7. Get out the soldering iron, and save your money for games.<br /><br />See also: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/14/psa-use-the-right-cables-for-your-tv/">PSA: Use the right cables for your TV</a><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/14/add-vga-to-standard-xbox-360-cable/">Add VGA to standard Xbox 360 cable</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Nov 2006 17:55:00 EST. Regardless, we wanted to watch our 1080p upscaled DVDs and -- due to all sorts of arcane legal restrictions -- Microsoft is only able to offer that service over VGA and not component (note: reason #38 why we want an HDMI connection).<br /><br />So, you'll appreciate our dismay when we plugged in our new ($50!) cable, only to find that our display had serious issues with the 360's VGA connection -- it was entirely washed out, a known issue with the Xbox 360's VGA implementation apparently. But there's more! Any resolution, not just 1920x1080, exhibits a significant amount of screen tearing, which isn't replicated using component. And one last thing. Some televisions, most notably <a href="http://www.xbox360fanboy.com/2006/10/31/fall-update-wont-play-nice-with-sony-1080p-tvs/">Sony's LCD XBR series</a>, that are supposed to accept 1080p over component just flat out refuse. Just reading through the <a href="http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=743863">AVS Forums thread</a> on the topic should be enough to convince anyone that something's rotten in the state of 1080p on the 360. <br /><br />Microsoft podcaster Major Nelson brings word that the team in Redmond is aware of the 1080p issues and are working on a fix ... at around 8 minutes into <a href="http://www.majornelson.com/archive/2006/11/06/show-200-the-two-hundreth-two-hour-spectacular.aspx">his latest 'cast</a> (number 200, congrats!), he says the display issue is "kind of this bug that the guys are working on and they are aware of." He limits it to simply the 1080p over component issue, so let's hope that Microsoft takes the opportunity to isolate and correct the outstanding VGA issues as well.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/11/06/major-nelson-fix-on-the-way-for-xbox-360-1080p-problems/">Engadget HD</a>]<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/08/fix-for-360s-1080p-troubles-is-being-worked-on/">Fix for 360's 1080p troubles is being worked on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 08 Nov 2006 11:25:00 EST. While CVG promotes the Golden Joysticks as the "people's awards", you have to wonder if they use the same selection committee as <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/11/joystiq-takes-highest-honors-at-spike-vgas-finishes-dead-last/">Spike TV</a> when determining the nominees for each category. <br /><br />One disgruntled Joystiq reader is appalled that <em>50 Cent: Bulletproof</em> somehow managed to collect five nominations (we feel your pain, Sizer), despite the game's <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps2/50centbulletproof?q=50%20cent">metascores</a> being true to its namesake. This smacks of commercialism, but then again it gives the GJAs that gritty, urban flava that you know just personifies all gamers.<br /><br />Another questionable nomination is <em>Shadow the Hedgehog</em> for The Sun's Family Game of the Year. Isn't that the one with the gun-toting, foul-mouthed, "edgy" Sonic wannabe (and a combined <a href="http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbx/shadowthehedgehog?q=shadow">metascore</a> of 49)? On behalf of the kiddies, I'll pass.<br /><br />How about the decision to limit the Nuts All-Nighter award to console and handheld games? Does this mean MMOs and other PC games are only <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/01/european-game-addiction-clinic-opens-next-month/">addictive</a> outside the UK? That's just nutty! Wait, where's the award for best gaming blog? Oh, never mind.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/08/03/voting-opens-for-golden-joystick-awards/">Voting opens for GJAs, proceed with caution</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 03 Aug 2006 16:05:00 EST. The remake features "all new full VGA backgrounds, enhanced hand-drawn close up cut-scenes, dialog portraits for all the characters, original music by our professional composer, full speech pack (including narrator), and a new point-and-click interface."<br /><br />Infamous Adventures believes that <em>King's Quest III</em> is still relevant and has developed the remake to ensure that this timeless adventure will be compatible with modern hardware. No profits will be made. The game (43.2 MB) is available to download free of charge.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2006/06/19/kings-quest-iii-pimped-out-and-re-released/">King's Quest III pimped out &amp; re-released</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Jun 2006 15:55:00 EST.
