Thanks to the journalizing of one Dean Takahashi, we may finally have an answer to one of our favorite questions: Why wasn't the Wii MotionPlus, the thing that makes the Wiimote work the way you thought it would before you bought it, included when the system launched? According to Reggie Fils-Amie (and this should come as no surprise) Nintendo was aware of the tech when it was putting the Wii together, but deemed the price "too high" at the time. Now that it's cheaper, it's bringing it to the masses.

What Reggie won't discuss is when the next Wii will go public, calling rumors of a 2011 release "pure rumor and speculation." Meaning: The release of Nintendo's new console is completely dependent on Shigeru Miyamoto lowering his crystalline hovercastle from Planet Flowerkiss and dropping it off ... and it's not like he ever calls first.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joystiq hands-on: Tetris Party (WiiWare)

Filed under: Features, Nintendo Wii, Puzzle, Galleries

We've soaked up Tetris on countless platforms. Imagine our excitement when word arose that Sega's upcoming penguin-friendly title Let's Tap could be played "without holding a controller". We thought the day we've dreamed about since we pressed the power button on our respective first home consoles had come -- the day when video games aren't played with hands, but with minds. Unfortunately, a trailer for the game surfaced during the Nintendo Media Summit, revealing that while no controller-touching will actually be required to play Let's Tap, hands will still be part of the equation.

To get a clear understanding of the control scheme, check out the trailer after the break. It seems the game will be manipulated by placing a Wiimote face-down on a flat surface (a Nintendo Wii box is used in the video), then tapping upon said surface. We're still not positive how it works -- though we are positive that the speak-and-spell-infused song used in the trailer has stick-in-your-head properties we haven't seen since the days of Lou Bega.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga announced for Wii

The latest issue of Japanese gaming supermag, Famitsu, had a welcome surprise for fans of Nintendo's three-DVD-wide home console -- the announcement of Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga for the Wii. Gamekyo originally posted scans of the article announcing the title, translating a few key features of the former PSP series' Wii-imagining -- chief among these being an online co-op mode using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. While the PSP version of Valhalla Knights received middling reviews, we remain, as ever, cautiously optimistic about any RPG offerings for the Wii -- though considering the game is about 70 percent complete and not due out in Japan until next year, it may be a while before we get our hands on it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sin & Punishment 2 coming to Wii

Although its only release in America came as a Virtual Console title on the Wii, Sin & Punishment <strike>(N64 version pictured above)</strike> has a pretty hardcore following here in the States. Nintendo has announced a follow-up to the Treasure-developed rail shooter. No details are available yet, but those who have played the original Tsumi to Batsu will know that the game is a perfect fit for Nintendo's current home console. So, get this: Nintendo, having had pretty incredible success with the Wii, is going to make another one! We know, it sounds crazy ... but so did the idea that we'd still be having trouble finding Wiis into 2009. Despite our fears that Nintendo will continue trickling Wiis out the door until 2027 - at which point it'll finally offer a second, soon-to-be sold-out color offering - former 1UP editorial director John Davison says that "Nintendo is currently showing early presentations of its next home console hardware" (according to "multiple sources in the game development and publishing community" that is!).

So what's Wii 2 (Super Wii? Wii Advance?) got? According to Davison, the few that have seen this mythical beast have dubbed it "Wii HD" - it's got HD visuals (duh), "a greater emphasis on digitally distributed and backwardly compatible content," as well as a familiar "emphasis" on what's in your hand instead of what's next to your futuristic HOLO-TV. With R&D spending at the Big N tripling since the Wii launched in 2006, we're not certain that's just a plain-old-Wiimote anymore. Our best guess now: a HOLO-ARM.
We wish we had some insight for you that could put this image into some different perspective, but it's exactly what it looks like: A lightsaber attachment for your Wiimote. You pay $35, you put one of them on your controller and it makes your pretender work better. Seriously.

As we've said on the Joystiq Podcast, if you're unable to have Wii fun without an attachment like this, you're tantamount to a fetishist unable to climax without the introduction of leather-bound dominatrices or rubber replications of farm animals. So, feel free to pick up the two-pack, but just make sure the store's empty beforehand, OK?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

De Blob dev cautious about WiiMotion Plus

We've called Wii MotionPlus "the thing that makes the WiiMote work the way it always should have" but there's at least one developer who doesn't care for that alternate history time line. Nick Hagger, the producer of Wii's de Blob, said he's worried the addition will overcomplicate things for the Wii's base, as developers move towards more gestural control schemes.

"While it's definitely intellectually stimulating from a development perspective to play with those ideas - and I think it does appeal to a set of gamers out there - I think the majority of people that play on the Wii want something very simple that they can just immediately get their heads around," Hagger said.

We'd like to think that there's room for both gamers who want more gestural controls and those who want to keep flicking their wrists to pretend they're tipping cows, or whatever's going on over in Wiiville these days. Remember way, way back (two weeks ago!) when GameStop CEO Dan DeMatteo said there was no "near-term end in sight for Wii shortages"? Well, one of his employees, VP of Merchandising Bob McKenzie, seem to have a decidedly different take on the problem, telling MTV Multiplayer's Stephen Totilo that the Wii supply situation this holiday season will be "much, much better than it has been the last two years."

While not directly contradicting his boss, McKenzie seemed much more hopeful about the supply of systems for the crucial months ahead. "I can't say we will be in stock every day throughout the holiday season," he said, "but I can tell you that the current flow we've seen coming from Nintendo on Wii hardware makes us very confident that we will meet the business model that we've got."

What's a potential Wii owner to do with these conflicting messages? We recommend playing it safe by taking a large tub of beef jerky and a few gallons of bottled water to your nearest GameStop and refusing to leave until you get the thin, white system you crave. It's a foolproof plan -- but when the police ask, tell them you came up with it yourself, OK?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Analyst: Wii is 'inhospitable' for third parties

Just when you thought the embers were finally beginning to cool regarding the oft-contested state of third-party game sales on the Wii, leave it to some analyst to breathe generously on the dying fire and get it going again once more. Cowen Group's Doug Creutz is just such an analyst, as he calls Nintendo's console a "relatively inhospitable platform for third-party publishers."

Offering an example, Creutz points out that notwithstanding Madden 09's recent NPD dominance, the Wii version of EA's annual gridiron push sold significantly less compared to those on the PS3 and Xbox 360. How significant? Despite a larger console install base, the Wii version sold 87 percent fewer copies than those sold for the Xbox 360, and 79 percent less than those for the PS3 according to the analyst -- his life is obviously split between advising investors where to put their cash and stirring fanboys into a tizzy.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Disaster: Day of Crisis survival guide explains gameplay

As is usually the case with oft-delayed titles, details concerning the mystery-shrouded Disaster: Day of Crisis have been slim indeed. Thankfully, the official Japanese site for the disastrous survival game recently added a few explanations on how you'll be guiding optimistic protagonist Raymond Bryce through his very own terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

According to a translation from Siliconera, the combat portion of the title plays like a light gun shooter with a Time Crisis-esque cover system. However, you'll need to bust out your best Smooth Moves to make it through the motion-sensitive survival segments, furiously shaking your Wiimote to outrun a tidal wave, push a bus, perform CPR or place an irate phone call to a puzzlingly absent FEMA. We'll have to wait on reactions from our Eastern Hemisphere acquaintences to see how these two great tastes taste together.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rumor: Wii, DS headed to India on Sept. 30

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii, Business

If a post on The Angry Pixel is to be believed, the not-infinitesimal number of people in India are about to be swept into the wonderful world of waggle, with the Wii rearing its slender head in the country on September 30th. Joining it will be Nintendo's touchy-feely portable system, the DS, which has astonishingly managed to avoid the birthplace of bun-eating sensation Benny Lava all this time.

Nintendo's pair will allegedly be distributed by Samurai-India, in partnership with HCL, with the DS fetching a price of INR 7,990 ($178) and the Wii going for a lofty INR 19,990 ($445). Hey, grab a Molson and pull up a comfortable ice block and listen up. The AP is reporting that the Wii has become the first system to reach a million units sold in Canada. That's like one system for every two people or so you've got up there, eh? We're guessing it's because the pearly white exterior of the system matches the decor of your igloos (not to mention the polar bears roaming around outside).

According to NPD statistics, the Wii has sold 1,060,000 Candian units through July, meaning the upcoming Wii version of NHL 2K9 can count on at least 1.5 million sales up there in the frozen North (some Canadians will buy an extra copy for their pet moose, you see). Microsoft and Sony are rumored to be planning competing lumberjack simulations and marketing tie-ins with popular maple syrup makers to increase their systems' appeal to the Canadian market, but as the Quebecois say, this might be "trop peu, trop tard."

(Apologies to all Canadians, who we're sure are too polite and respectful to get mad about this, right?)

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Samba de Amigo Wii maracas priced, dated on Amazon

As you could probably deduce from earlier posts concerning ill-conceived pseudo-peripherals for Nintendo's latest home console -- we're not really fans of most Wiimote attachments. We don't need a cheap, plastic tennis racket snapped to the front of our controller to "get our McEnroe on" when playing Wii Tennis. We don't need our Wiimote to look like an ugly sword to carve up baddies in Twilight Princess. However, we suppose the only thing that could counteract our disdain for these shoddy add-ons is our unbridled love of Latin American percussion instruments.

We caught a glimpse of the "prototype" Samba de Amigo maracas a couple months ago, but a recent Amazon listing for the attachments shows that the ol' bean shakers have undergone a makeover, taking on a sassy red finish. The date Amazon has listed for the maracas is September 23 for the price of $14.99 -- though considering the title will come bundled with the attachments, you'd only need to pick these up if you wish to share the true Samba experience with a multiplayer pal. Or if you somehow broke yours, we guess. Or if you're Goro.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nintendo Fanboy Weekly: Aug 14 - Aug 20

Filed under: Nintendo DS, Nintendo Wii

Our hopes for the title were admittedly low -- however, a pair of videos for the redesigned platformer, including the trailer above and an 11-minute gameplay montage (embedded after the break), recently made their way onto GameTrailers ... and into our hearts.

Okay, we're still not entirely sold on KORE quite yet, but the robo-platforming and Psychonauts-esque visuals are more than enough to pique our collective interest. We'll be keeping an eye on the resuscitated title as its ambitious developers continue revamping it -- we just hope they kan limit the inkorrekt usage of the letter K. It seems the title, which was announced alongside Nintendo's latest home console before being put on indefinite hold, recently received a Mature rating from Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification (for "violence, themes and infrequent coarse language", for those who were curious) on Wednesday. Could this signify an end to Disaster's time out? We'll let you know when we hear something more concrete.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

'Wii' before Wii

It's been well over two years since Nintendo unveiled its "revolutionary" console name (2 years, 3 months and 17 days to be precise). But, much like truthiness, it'd be silly to think it had been the first time the term had been used. Just ask Wii Yatani, a 26-year old New Yorker who experienced all the oh-so clever urine puns decades before the House of Mario. MTV's Stephen Totilo has a profile on Yatani and how the waggle-inducing name has changed his name's perspective.

Additionally, according to Totilo, there were over 1900 pre-Nintendo Wii references in the newspaper and magazine database Nexis. From a Singaporean record-setting stair climber to a Papa New Guinea lieutenant, Wii has traveled the globe. And although Nintendo hasn't attributed an exact definition, Yatani's Wii is derived from two Kanji characters meaning "universe" and "willpower."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dust off your Wii, it's time to watch a DVD

Thankfully, homebrewer Erant has stepped up to the plate and delivered a clutch hit: DVD video playback.

... Um, let's try that again: DVD VIDEO PLAYBACK!!1!!!!!

The no mess utility is easy to install (well, maybe not for grandpa) and includes a media player that also makes nice with the video files stored on your SD card. All we need now is a VHS-to-DVD converter so we can transfer mom's old step aerobics tapes onto disc. That's right, homebrewed balance board games! Who knew all this old stuff could feel so new again?

[Via Wii Fanboy]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
